Book, Croydon Then and Now, 2012
Historic summary of Croydon comprised largely of early and contemporary photographs - Geoff Arnott, John Hutchinson, Les Hutchinson, Marjorie Meeuwsen, Croydon Historical Society Inc.Foreword by Cr. Les Willmott, J.P. - last mayor of the former City of Croydon. Acknowledgments: In the production of any book, many people play a part, be it financially or the giving of time with their knowledge and expertise in specialised areas, which concludes with a quality production - a book that is attractive, informative and accurate. We believe this book fits the description handsomely, and should bring joy and pleasant memories to many former and current residents of Croydon. To people who don't know very much about Croydon, this book will most certainly enlighten them. This has been a team effort, with many people playing important roles. With all this in mind, we would like to thank the following: The Maroondah City Council The Australian National Library Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs Hutchinson Legal of Ringwood Sue Pitt, Alan Bennett and staff of the Croydon Library David and Ron Jewell Andrew Potts Adrian Arnott Elsie Bolwell Lyn Lynch Nick Anchen Cr Les Wilmott JP The Neville Family Bounty Print Dawn Gubb Photo courtesy of Leader Newspaper Press on pages 87, 90 and 113 -
Port of Echuca
Black and white photograph, 1973 or 1974
The P.S Pevensey was built in 1910 in Moama by the Permewan Wright Co. Initially she was a barge, called the Mascotte, but by May 1911 she had been converted into the P.S.Pevensey. Initially the P.S.Pevensey was used as for transporting wool from the Murrumbidgee River Stations. In 1932 the P.S Pevensey carried the largest load of wool ever from the Murrumbidgee River. This record was 2600 bales of wool. She was destroyed by fire at Koraleigh Landing later in 1932, but was soon rebuilt.By 1939 she was running a regular service between Morgan and Mildura. By 1958 it was reported that she was moored above Renmark and not working. In 1967 she was sunk by vandals. In 1968 she was bought by Bill and Norm Collins. They refloated her, restored her and moored her at Mildura. The City of Echuca bought the P.S. Pevensey from the Collins Family in 1973, for $20,000. The P.S. Pevensey came to Echuca Wharf in July 1973 along with Kevin Hutchinson OA., a shipwright who stayed with the P.S. Pevensey for the rest of his life. The P.S Pevensey currently works as a Tourist paddle steamer taking cruises from the Echuca Wharf every day. (Ref. Parsons, R. "Ships of the Inland Rivers. P. 116.)This photograph is significant because it shows the wharf in 1973, being converted into a Tourist precinct. The roof of the cargo shed is being repaired. The P.S Pevensey is tied up to the wharf and looks as if it needs more repairs. The buildings in the background are still used as business venues. The Shamrock Hotel can be seen in High Street. A train can also be seen parked on the wharf.A black and white rectangular photograph of the P.S Pevensey tied up at Echuca Wharf during a high river probably taken in 1973 or 1974.On the Bond Store in Murray Esplanade can be seen the words SHACKELL. On the front of the building can be seen the words "Panel & Paint."p.s pevensey, echuca wharf, hutchinson, kevin, collins, norm, collins, bill, city of echuca -

Photograph - Cabinet Photograph, Eden, Society Studios, Possibly Albert Key, c.1896
Photo is identified on rear as ? Colin Key. Colin Hutchinson Key (1907-1939) was the son of Albert Key (1872-1921) and Isabella Roberts (1875-1940) and the grandson of Frederick Key (1842-1908) and Jane Key (nee Dalrymple 1845-1931) Suspect the photo is misidentified and is actually Albert Key, Colin Key's father. Cabinet Photo Eden, Society Studios Photographer If indeeed Colin Key, photo would have been taken c.1925. The fashion is more indicative of late 1890s - c.1896 [Cataloguing Note: Identification of individual does not fit the time period for the photographer by about 15 to 20 years - possibly misidentified. Eden Studios was big in Sydney from 1895 through 1927+ but only appears to have operated in Melbourne at 284 Collins Street from 1896-1900 and 149 Swanston Street 1904-1906. These individuals were Melbourne based so unlikely to be the Sydney studios. Further, does not look like the same person when compared to other photographs on Ancestry family trees]On back in pencil ? Photograph - Junior legatee outing, Legacy Camp Mt Evelyn 1946
A group photo of a group of Legacy girls on a camp at Mount Evelyn in May 1946. The accompanying letter says that Miss Enez Domec Carre is in the centre with Legatee Buth in front of her looking between two girls. Also in the picture is Legatee Vines and Legatee 'Grat' Gratten. The photo and letter were sent to Legacy by Val Hutchinson (nee Wigg) and the photo had been forwarded to her by the family of her good friend the late June Whitechurch. An article in the Legacy newsletter of August 1946 says that on 19th may, 90 Junior and Intermediate girls travelled by Red Cross coaches to St Mark's Holiday Camp at Mt Evelyn. The girls were divided into 4 teams distinguished by coloured sashes in Green, Gold, Red and Blue. The teams competed against each other in sports and other activities that were awarded points. A pleasant hike was arranged to Mr Beveridge's Log Cabin which was where Mr Beveridge took this photo.A record of a camp for young girls in 1946.
