James Curnow served as a key official for the Geelong Jubilee Juvenile and Industrial Exhibition in 1887. This exhibition was a major event held to celebrate Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee and to encourage young people in trades and the "fine arts and ornamental works". The illuminated address is authenticated by the signatures of the exhibition's committee members. The illuminated address given to Thomas Weekley on his retirement from the Great Extended Hustlers Gold Mine, was presented to the Bendigo Historical Society by a descendant of Thomas in 2014, during a commemoration of the Great Extended Hustlers mine accident of 1914, where seven men were killed. The mine disaster occurred on May 2, 1914, when a dynamite explosion killed seven miners waiting at a plat to ascend the mine. The exact cause of the explosion was unknown, and the subsequent inquiry found no one to blame. The accident is commemorated at the Hustlers Reef Gold Mining Reserve, Bendigo, on the former site of the mine. This lithographic illuminated address issued to E J Swift for his services to the lodge by the United Ancient Order of Druids (UAOD) Grand Lodge of Australia. E. J. Swift served as the Grand Secretary during a significant era when the UAOD (Melbourne) was one of Victoria's most influential friendly societies. Swift was a key figure in the development and opening of Druids House at 407–409 Swanston Street, Melbourne. He was present when the building was officially opened on 4 April 1927 by the Lord Mayor of Melbourne.The UAOD was founded in Melbourne in 1851 as an offshoot from it's English Order. The UAOD functioned as a friendly society, providing medical, funeral, and sickness benefits to its members. The illuminated address is produced by the prominent Melbourne firm Troedel & Co. Corporal Phillip Edward Cook, 4470, 46th Battalion AIF Over 300 men from the Shire of Whittlesea enlisted during WWI. One of these was Corporal Cook, son of the Rev. Richard and Elizabeth Cook, and husband of Jessie May Cook of Whittlesea. On 27 July 1915, at the age of 33, Phillip Cook enlisted in the AIF. He was killed in action at Bullecourt on 11 April 1917. Carl Roeder was a highly respected figure in the Bendigo mining community, serving 27 years as a manager in the region. Roeder was part of a wave of experienced German miners who migrated to the Bendigo goldfields, and settled in the Bendigo area (then Sandhurst) in 1862 .The Victoria Consols Mining Company was one of the major players on the famous Garden Gully line of reef, one of the richest gold-producing areas in the world. Beyond mine management, Roeder served as Chair of the Board of the VC mining company. The Artist is F. de Kock (Frederic de Kock) and was a known artist and lithographer in Sandhurst during the 1880s and was often commissioned for these high-end, bespoke illuminated addresses.Illuminated address presented to Carl Roeder. Gideon Nicol (1836-1908) was a seaman who came to Warrnambool in 1858. In 1865 he selected land at Mount Warrnambool . He was one of the founders of the Farnham Cheese and Butter Factory and the Garvoc Cheese and Butter Factory and was a Shire Councillor from 1879 to 1906. These items will be useful to include in the Gideon Nicol file.These are scans of two pages from a book and an illuminated manuscript. The Illuminated Address was presented to James Tonkin on March 4, 1895, honouring his extraordinary bravery in rescuing miner Owen R. Owen from suffocation in foul air at the Collmann and Tacchi Company’s No. 3 shaft in California Gully, Bendigo. Mayor John Green, J.P., of Eaglehawk presented the address and a Mining Department bravery certificate at the Mechanics' Institute in California Gully. Jacob Cohn was a prominent figure in Sandhurst (changed name to Bendigo in 1891). Jacob Cohn was a partner in the well-known Cohn Brothers brewery and served as the city's mayor during the 1888–1889 term. The Cohn Brothers' Victoria Brewery, founded in 1857, was a cornerstone of Bendigo's industry for over a century. Established by Danish immigrant brothers Moritz, Julius, and Jacob Cohn, it is most famous for brewing Australia’s first successful lager in 1882. In 1925, the family sold their brewing and hotel interests to Carlton & United Breweries (CUB). However, they continued to manufacture soft drinks and cordials until the 1970s, when the business was eventually acquired by the Coca-Cola Amatil Group. The illuminated address was usually a highly decorative, hand-lettered document often given to public officials in the 19th century to mark significant service or retirement.
