Walking on the road are two men on horseback, one of which is pulling a carriage with a small dog standing beside it. Behind them are a line of small buildings and shops. Small industries began to expand dramatically in Beechworth, particularly during the 1860s, leading to a strengthening of the towns economy. As early as 1853, areas surrounding the waterway known as Spring Creek were surveyed with the intent of mapping out plans for new roads and building allotments. Land was sold and new buildings were erected, creating an expansion of the Beechworth township and retail services. One building shown in this photograph is Straughair and Duncan's Beechworth Foundry. This business was established in 1858 through the partnership of Mark Straughair and John Duncan. It dealt mostly in the manufacturing of castings and mining machinery, receiving orders from all over the Ovens district. The Business eventually collapsed after the deaths of Straughair in 1882 and Duncan in 1896 but was reopened by W.H. Phillips in 1905. The two other buildings are both associated with the name McKenzie. Evidence suggests that the McKenzie family has a long association with the town of Beechworth. This photograph is historically significant as it provides insight into the nineteenth and twentieth century industrial expansions that happened in the area of Newtown, leading to the urbanisation of Beechworth. The Shire of Braybrook ceased to exist in 1951 when the CITY OF SUNSHINE was formed. ...From around circa 1850 Braybrook was already well established and became a staging point for prospectors on their way to the diggings. Local government for this rural area to the west of Melbourne came when the BRAYBROOK ROAD DISTRICT was proclaimed on 28 May 1860. This authority was superseded on 23 January 1871 with the formation of the SHIRE OF BRAYBROOK. The Shire of Braybrook existed for about 80 years during which time it experienced significant industrial growth. The Shire of Braybrook ceased to exist in 1951 when the CITY OF SUNSHINE was formed. The Coat of Arms informs the observer that the Shire of Braybrook was initially a rural area with its images of a cow, sheep, and hay. The reference to industry however probably does not indicate adequately the large growth in industrial activity that occurred within the Shire. Circular board of Masonite painted by A. H. Walker which is a true depiction of the Coat of Arms for the Shire of Braybrook. Situated in the suburb of Jacana, the school was part of a broader post-war initiative aimed at delivering accessible public education to communities shaped by migration, industrial growth, and government housing programs. Over the decades, Jacana Primary evolved alongside its community, reflecting the changing social and cultural landscape of the area. By the 1990s and early 2000s, the school had become a vibrant and inclusive environment, welcoming students from a wide range of cultural and socio-economic backgrounds. This diversity was embraced through inclusive teaching practices, multicultural celebrations, and student leadership initiatives such as the junior student council. The 2006 photograph captures a moment near the end of the school’s operation, showcasing the unity and shared purpose of its students and staff. It highlights the school’s role not only as a place of learning but also as a centre for community building, civic engagement, and social support. Although Jacana Primary School closed in the early 2000s, its legacy endures through archival materials like this photograph. These records offer valuable insights into the role of public education in shaping community identity and fostering social cohesion during a transformative period in Melbourne’s suburban history. The 2006 Students and Staff photograph from Jacana Primary School is a historically significant visual record that captures the final chapter of a school deeply embedded in Melbourne’s northern suburban landscape. Established in 1959 during a wave of post-war development, Jacana Primary was part of a broader initiative to provide accessible public education to communities shaped by migration, industrial growth, and housing expansion. This photograph reflects the school’s enduring commitment to inclusion, diversity, and community engagement. By the early 2000s, Jacana Primary had become a vibrant educational environment, welcoming students and staff from a wide range of cultural and socio-economic backgrounds. By the end of the 15th century, after tobacco was discovered in America, smoking had become a common pastime for everyday people. From that time, tobacco pipes were fashioned from many materials ranging from gold and silver to corn cobs and clay. A popular material was meerschaum, an expensive, soft, white stone from Turkey. In the 1820s, French craftsmen carved pipes out of the wood from the growth on the root of a Mediterranean White Heath. This material became increasingly popular due to its durable, heat-resistant qualities. The growth was called ‘bruyere’, now anglicised to ‘briar’ wood. ... industrial society. Later, he edited magazines like “Household Words” and toured with dramatic readings. A train crash in 1865 worsened his health, leading to his death at age 58 while writing “The Mystery of Edwin Drood”. Buried in Westminster Abbey, his vivid characters and social commentary remain influential. Little Dorrit is regarded as one of Dickens’s most serious, politically charged novels, often described as his most explicit assault on institutional injustice and bureaucratic inertia. It is valued for its complex portraits of psychological and moral growth ...Charles Dickens (1812–1870) was one of the great English novelists of the Victorian era, famous for vivid characters, social criticism, and stories that were first published in serial form. He began as a journalist, rose to enormous popularity during his lifetime, and wrote major works such as Oliver Twist, David Copperfield, and Great Expectations. Little Dorrit is about Amy “Little” Dorrit, a gentle, selfless woman born and raised in the Marshalsea debtors’ prison where her father, William Dorrit, has been imprisoned for unpaid debts. The story follows her as she works as a seamstress outside the prison, gradually becoming entangled with Arthur Clennam, a businessman returning from abroad. Dickens interweaves a sharp critique of Victorian bureaucracy, finance, and class throughout the story. The theme centres around Amy Dorrit who lives her whole early life in Marshalsea, supporting her family with quiet dignity while her father clings to fragile genteel pretensions. Arthur Clennam, disillusioned after years in China, becomes involved with the Dorrits and uncovers a web of secrets involving his own mother, a hidden inheritance, and shady business dealings. William Dorrit suddenly inherits a fortune and is able to lift the family out of poverty and into fashion conscious society. The novel shows how money distorts their characters and relationships, while Amy remains the moral centre.Little Dorrit. The novel shows how money distorts their characters and relationships, while Amy remains the moral centre. flagstaff hill, warrnambool, shipwrecked coast, flagstaff hill maritime museum, maritime museum, shipwreck coast, flagstaff hill maritime village, great ocean road, book, pattison collection, warrnambool library, warrnambool mechanics’ institute, ralph eric pattison, corangamite regional library service, warrnambool city librarian, mechanics’ institute library, victorian library board, warrnambool books and records, warrnambool children’s library, little dorrit, charles dickens -

These generators are powered by the hydro force of "stored" water at a higher altitude. The establishment of both the NSW and Victorian Hydro schemes was achieved from the mid 1900's to the 1960's. At this point in time the need for additional power sources to quench both an industrial and domestic demand for electricity was purely an economic and not and environmental (carbon reduction) factor. This hydro scheme was instigated by "the Government of the day" as a bold move and was the major force of the World War II refugee and "technical" workforce inclusion of skilled and unskilled migration into the Australian environment. Although this mass "invasion" of workers with families was thought of in some circles as intrusive, the expansion of population post war years and its integration into the Australian rural sector, produced the multi- lingual multi-cultural diversity of later years. This voltmeter is very significant to the Kiewa Valley as its use was introduced during the Kiewa Hydro Scheme. Although only a small apparatus it was part of the explosion of human resources into the valley. This influx of population transformed the region from that of a basically quiet rural region to one which evolved into both an industrial and a larger residential community. This evolution in the valley created a change, not only in the "physical" landscape but also the socio-economic expansion which permitted other "tourist" based industries into the valley. This analog volt meter has two metal rods protruding from the "back" of instrument with screw on points for the negative and the positive leads allowing the "current" to flow across the calibrated resistors to indicate on the "face" side the strength of the voltage "power". The "face" of the instrument has a zero point and then five evenly graduated marks from Zero to the "100, 200 and 300" marked points of measures. A large "V" below these pointers indicates that they represent levels of voltage. Three small screws hold the "face" in place. At the back of the meter is an aluminium "clasp" with three protruding screws (positioning fasteners) and a a screw tightening fixture for the correct fastening of the "clasp" into the correction location on the meter "board".Manufacturer's logo "CSG" underneath "ITALIA"kiewa valley tourism, victorian alps, alternate energy supplies, alpine population growth -

It was used to measure very small voltages associated with the operation of the various Hydro Generators. The readings were able to be shown by the resistor in use in the current circuit. During this time period, high quality testing instruments were either sourced from Europe or England. This milli-volt meter is very significant to the Kiewa Valley as it was used by those electrical technicians, who were part of the Kiewa Hydro Scheme. An "off spin" from the Scheme was the beginning of an explosion in "human" resources into the Kiewa Valley. This influx of population transformed the region from that of a basically quiet rural region to one which evolved into both industrial and larger residential community. It is contained in a wooden box and has two coloured (red/black, positive and negative) screw tight knobs which have bake-lite connections. It also has a covered (black tin) view meter marked from zero to 10 millivolts. Underneath this and within a round bake-lite is a small adjustment screw.
