Born in Bendigo in1858 to a large family Thomas Jefferson Connelly whose father was American, was named after the third president of the U.S. After completing high school and his articles he practiced as a solicitor opening his own business in the following year. Thomas Connelly was elected to the Sandhurst Coundil in January 1885 and was elected Mayor in 1887 and was the first Mayor to be born in Bendigo and the youngest at that time to hold office. He resigned after 12 months but continued to be a member of the Bendigo Hospital Committee and Mechanics' Institute. He died at the age of 34 in 1892 while conducting a defence case in Kerang. Thomas Connelly had married Frances Reynolds in 1883 and together they had one daughter and two sons both whom died in World War 1. Robin Boyd developed a close friendship with the founder of the Bauhaus in Weimar Germany, Walter Gropius, who had moved to the USA in the 1930s. Through this connection, Boyd was invited to be the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Bemis Professor at the School in the North American academic year 1956-7. Robin and Patricia Boyd, with their youngest daughter Suzy, were based in Cambridge, Massachusetts for the year. Boyd gave some lectures at MIT and he was also invited to give lectures at many other universities, allowing him to travel widely within the USA, especially on the East Coast. This gave him the opportunity to meet architects like Frank Lloyd Wright, Eero Saarinen, Paul Rudolph and many others, and visit the offices of Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, and places like Taliesin and the General Motors Technical Center Detroit. Publications evolved from being journals aimed at the middle class to cheaper, chattier more domestic magazines more widely available. Alice Letitia Swan was the daughter of Edward Swan (tinsmith and plumber at Orbost) and Emma Dinah Jefferson. Alice married Herman Oswald (Ossie) Wehner (blacksmith, Orbost) on 4-4-1923. She was born in 1899 in Omeo and died 14-6-1979, aged 80 in Orbost.(info. from John Phillips)These are early 20th century examples of English women's magazines. They give practical advice on needlework and they evidence the widespread interest in contemporary fashion. In doing so they show what were the fashionable, but broadly affordable, women's and children's clothing styles of their day.
