These 11 photographs were taken at Flag Day, an annual sports competition between the Army Survey Regiment and the School of Military Survey, at Bendigo 19th of May 1989. The two RASvy units took turns each year to host the event. The day competition usually comprised basketball, cross country, golf, sailing, squash, softball, tennis, touch football, tug-of-war and volleyball. The evening competition often included darts, carpet bowls, hookey, quoits and snooker. The winner of the Flag Day competition in 1989 is not known. The Corps Day Parade was held to commemorate the 74th anniversary of the formation of the Royal Australian Survey Corps. The Parade Commander was CO LTCOL John Winzar and the Reviewing Officer was the Colonel Commandant (honorary appointment) of the Survey Corps - COL John Hillier. The guest of honour was the unidentified Mayor of Bendigo. The Defence Force Service Medal Clasp was presented to LTCOL Winzar in recognition of 20 years of efficient remunerated service. At that time the Institution was known as the Ballarat College of Advanced Education. In 1990 it became known as Ballarat University College, then in 1994 as University of Ballarat. It was 2014 that it became Federation University. VIOSH Australia students are safety managers, senior advisors and experienced OHS professionals. They come from all over Australia and industry. Students are taught active research and enquiry; rather than textbook learning and a one-size fits all approach. VIOSH accepts people into the Graduate Diploma of Occupational Hazard Management who have no undergraduate degree - on the basis of extensive work experience and knowledge. The first newsletter of the Society was issued May 1978 and has been published continuously ever since on a bi-monthly basis. With the cessation of the Shire of Eltham in late 1994, the Society's name was revised to Eltham District Historical Society and this name first appeared with issue No. 103, July 1995. Franics Read known as Jock, was a life time resident of Eltham. He served in the Navy in WW2. He was well loved as a long time school crossing supervisor and member of EDHS with a remarkable memory of his life's experiences. Contents 1. Alan Marshall AM, (2 May 1902 – 21 January 1984) was an Australian writer, story teller, humanist and social documenter. Personal correspondence between Gwenda Sanderson and Alan Marshall, dated between 1979 and 1983. There are 21 letters in all, the last 3 of which were dictated from the Hurlingham Nursing Home in Brighton. Background information for the letters (daugher Merrilyn Sanderson 10 October 2025): My mother, Gwenda Sanderson ( nee White ) grew up in the western district and knew Alan Marshall's sister. Gwenda was an aspiring author, and reached out to Alan for support and advice regarding her writing. Alan proved to be a generous and inspiring mentor and as you will see, they established a rapport. In 1966 Gwenda moved from Mortlake to Montmorency (quite a culture shock!) and around 1983 she and her husband, Stan moved to Diamond Creek. Letters: 1. The Freedom of Entry to the City was an honour conferred by the Bendigo City Council to the Army Survey Regiment in 1970. 1980 was the third time the unit exercised its freedom of marching into the city with swords drawn, bayonets fixed and drums beating. The honour is usually bestowed upon local regiments, in recognition of their dedicated service, and it is common for military units to periodically exercise their freedom by arranging a parade through the city. Led by the Regiment’s CO – LTCOL Bob Skitch, the unit marched down View St in the CBD, along Pall Mall and up Gaol Rd to the Queen Elizabeth II Oval. The ceremonial parade followed with a march past the guests of honour, Mayor of Bendigo Councillor Paul Tomkinson and military dignitaries. The parade concluded after formal inspections of the troops. The Regiment also exercised its Freedom of Entry with anniversary parades in 1977, 1980, 1985, 1990 and 1995.These black and white photographs of the Army Survey Regiment were taken on the occasion of the Freedom of Entry parade to the City of Bendigo in 1980. This set of 25 photographs were taken at the Corps Day Parade held at the Army Survey Regiment, Bendigo on the 28th of June 1989. The Corps Day Parade was held to commemorate the 74th anniversary of the formation of the Royal Australian Survey Corps. The Parade Commander was CO LTCOL John Winzar and the Reviewing Officer was the Colonel Commandant (honorary appointment) of the Survey Corps - COL John Hillier. The guest of honour was the unidentified Mayor of Bendigo. These photographs were taken at Flag Day, an annual sports competition between the Army Survey Regiment and the School of Military Survey, at Bendigo on the 10th of October 1986. The two RASvy units took turns each year to host the event. The day competition usually comprised basketball, cross country, golf, sailing, squash softball, tennis, touch football, tug-of-war and volleyball. The evening competition often included darts, carpet bowls, hookey, quoits and snooker. The scoreboard in the background in photo .11P indicated an emphatic victory for the Army Survey Regiment.This is a set of 13 photographs of Flag Day, Army Survey Regiment versus the School of Military Survey, at Bendigo on the 10th of October 1986. Eltham Town Square is centred along Commercial Place running between Arthur Street and Pryor Street. Its origins stretch back to the first design proposals developed in 1979 by then Shire Planner Rodney Roscholler who later went on to become Eltham Shire Council CEO, and Cr. Robert Allenjim connor collection, commercial place, eltham shopping centre, eltham town square, bakers delight, ferguson plarre bakehouses

The old weatherboard building, possibly dating from the 1860s, comprised a dwelling with a shop in the front room opening off a timber verandah deck which directly fronted the Main Road footpath. At the rear was a brick building of much later date which was for many years used for the bakery. The buildings were demolished in 1979 for construction of flats. The old bakery was one of the earliest stores in Eltham. It was once run by Luther Haley who was evicted when Mrs Burgoyne bought the shop in 1902. Luther built the first shop in the new business district next to the railway station in 1902 (later Staffs general store). It was also the scene of a suspected murder when the baker's wife was found dead at the bottom of the well but that was more urban myth. The unfortunate woman suffered a medical episode resulting in her death and she consequently fell in to the well, so no murder after all. The incident happened in 1898 and the owner and baker was Mr Clement Brown. It was his wife Martha that met her unfortunate demise. A description of her struggle is in the link below. J.N. Burgoyne bought the bakery in 1902 (Mrs Burgoyne was the owner but it seems a lot of men back in those days put their businesses in the names of their wives). The subject of murder first came to light in a newspaper story in 1954 when their son J.J. (Jack) Burgoyne was speaking about the business after it had changed hands to Mr Jim Arnett and family. It was again referenced by Harry Burgoyne (grandson) in 1979 when the bakery was demolished. Seems like what may have been an embellished yarn of old became urban folklore but was simply not true. These photographs were taken at the Corps Day parade at the Army Survey Regiment, Bendigo in July 1983. This was the Director of the Survey Corps – COL John Hillier’s last parade at Fortuna before his retirement. COL Hillier, often referred to as ‘NRJ’ (his initials) was Director for five years. COL Alex W. Laing attended the parade as his successor, seen in the foreground of photos .5P and .6P. COL Hillier was appointed a couple of years later to the honorary position of Colonel Commandant of the Royal Australian Survey Corps from 1989 to 1993. COL Laing was Director of RASvy from July 1983 to November 1988. This is a set of 27 black & white photographs of Army Survey Regiment’s Australian Rules football team – the Fortuna Lions aka “Fortuna Fumblers”, taken at Seymour Victoria in 1983. The Fortuna Lions competed in the Puckapunyal Area Football Association for several years from 1978 to 1984 and in 1983, fielded a great team it managed to reach the Grand Final. Held at the neutral ground at Kings Park, Seymour, the match was an incredibly exciting and bruising contest played in damp conditions and ended in a draw. Dave Lawler’s spectacular mark was a highlight. Due to heavy rain during the following week, the Grand Final replay was held the following week in even heavier conditions. The Fortuna Lions prevailed in the replay with an emphatic victory. The team’s leaders were Eddie Jacobs (coach), Rhys De Laine (captain), Greg Else (vice-captain), and Ken Slater (manager).
