Bowie knife, presented to or ordered by Charles John Dennys. Charles John Dennys (1818-1898) arrived from England in 1842 and set up a wool-broking business in 1852 with his cousin Thomas Allen Lascelles and Edward Walton. This became Dennys, Lascelles Ltd and later Dennys, Lascelles, Austin and Co. after prominent grazier Sidney Austin joined the firm in 1881. Dennys was appointed Secretary of the District Council of Grant in 1843 and was elected to the South Barwon municipal council in 1857 ("The Bay, Barwon and Beyond", pp.12-13). The donor is the great grand daughter of Charles Dennys; she found the knife whilst cleaning out an aunt's house and has no knowledge of its provenance. Many bowie knives were exported to America from Sheffield, where a number of manufacturers began making them in the 1800s. The postcard is a copy of a painting by the renowned British maritime artist Jack Spurling (John (Jack) Robert Charles Spurling 1870-1933). Spurling's love for the sea was fulfilled as a teenager when he worked as an apprentice, eventually gaining a Second Mate certificate and going on to join the Blue Anchor Line as a junior officer. His love for the sea shows in his detailed paintings of ship portraits. THE CUTTY SARK: - The Cutty Sark was built in Britain in 1869 and was one of the last great sailing ships. At first, it carried tea from China. Later, it was used to transport wool from Australia. It became famous for its speed and held the record for the fastest voyage from Australia to Britain for ten years. Later, a Portuguese company bought the ship and renamed it Ferreira. After that, a retired sea captain purchased it to use as a training ship in Cornwall. When the captain died, the ship was given to a training college in Greenwich in 1938. In 1954, it was placed in dry dock at Greenwich, where it remains on display. The postcard depicts the clipper, Cutty Sark, which was a special ship because it carried wool from Australia to other parts of the world. Postcards like this one help us imagine what sea travel was like before steam-powered ships became common, and they show us how trade, travel, and migration evolved. The Cutty Sark is also famous for its speed. It set a record for the journey from Australia to Britain and kept that title for ten years. Cigerette case given by Dame Nellie Melba to John Charles Hughes. Mr Hughes was responsibile for maintaining and tuning her piano while on tour in the USA and AustraliaJohn Charles Hughes was born in 1882 of Scotish- Irish ancestry . He was a graduate of the New England Conservatory od Boston where he studied classical music and piano. In 1926 John Charles Hughes' wife died of cancer leaving a daughter Dorothy (who is the wife of the donor). He was unable to continue his work after the death of his wife and after a bout of alcoholism disappeared and was never seen again. Silver cigarette case with textured horizontal lines on outside surface and engraved monogram in centre. Hinged lid and clasp at one end. Black and white photograph of a young soldier in uniform, and identified in a (contemporary) typed label as C A J Dollman (Charles Arthur John Dollman, known as Jack). On stiff card backing and burnt along the right hand edge of the photograph. Dollman did not serve in World War One, so it was possibly taken at the time of the Boer War. Based on his year of birth he would have been 19 in 1900. Part of the Dollman collection.

Sepia toned postcard photograph of a young man on a partially burned postcard. The right hand side of the photograph is missing. The photograph was originally in the Dollman family album and when it was removed most of the writing on the back was destroyed. The words 'Christ C .... ope' and 'unswick 1913' are still visible, so it is likely that it was made for Christ Church Brunswick's Band of Hope in about 1913. The young man can be identified from other photographs in the album. He is Charles Arthur John (Jack) Dollman (1881-1953). Part of the Dollman collection.

Fire damaged studio portrait of a middle aged male wearing a 2 piece dark suit, shirt with rounded collar and dark tie. He has been identified from other photographs as C A J Dollman (Charles Arthur John Dollman, known as Jack), Brunswick resident, Brunswick councillor 1945-1950 and member of the first Brunswick Historical Association, established in 1937. He died at his home 27 Fitzgibbon Avenue, West Brunswick in 1953 aged 73. Part of the Dollman colleciton.

The loom was made by John Charles Mann in the late 1920s-early 1930s for Lilian Joyce Mann. Mr Mann enjoyed woodwork. He died in 1945. Ms Mann was very interested in crafts and owned a shop in Jacob Street which sold handmade soft toys and items woven from the loom, for example table mats. The shop was later bought out by Henry Jacobs and later became Myer. Ms Mann died on the 17th July 2007.
