The John E. Hand & Sons Company was founded in Philadelphia in 1873, quickly gaining a reputation as competent manufacturers of nautical instruments and compass adjusters. In fact, John Enos Hand, the company founder, is recognised as the first man in America to adjust a compass aboard an iron ship. The Hand Company built navigational equipment for all varieties of floating vessels, and operated a chain of retail outlets with “service stations” in numerous port cities, including Baltimore and New Orleans, until 1956. Service stations sold Hand instruments as well as other nautical paraphernalia and provided compass adjusting services. Additionally, John E Hand and his two sons, John L Hand and Bartram Hand, were inventors in their own right who patented design improvements for numerous instruments that were employed in the company’s work. Commercial and private contracts dominated the firm’s business until the late 1930s when the United States military began preparations for World War II. Although the Hand Company never completely abandoned its involvement with private industry, after World War II, military contracts monopolised their business. The Company obtained contracts with the Navy, Coast Guard and Marines to develop new instruments, and to build military-engineered nautical equipment. Of note are the wrist compass, developed for the Navy beginning in the 1950s, and the Mark VII Model 5 Navy Standard Binnacle. Although it moved numerous times, the Hand Company headquarters and factory remained in the Delaware Valley, occupying several buildings in Philadelphia and southern New Jersey. Maintaining its central office in Philadelphia well into the 1900s, the factory was moved to Atco, New Jersey around the turn of the twentieth century and subsequently to Haddon field, New Jersey. It moved one last time in the 1960s to Cherry Hill, New Jersey. In 1997, California-based Sunset Cliffs Merchandising Corporation purchased the Hand Company and all its assets for $100,000. "HAND" brand taffrail log by John F. Hand and Sons Co. Register is enclosed in log, has a glass front and 3 dials on an enameled surface, the first dial registers the miles up to 100, the second registers the units up to 10 mile, the third registers quarters of a mile. The item is rocket shaped with a three blade rotor and a rope ring attachment at one end; the rotor will spin when a rope is attached, allowing the apparatus dials to measure the ship's speed when it is dragged behind a ship. Hand knitted, long sleeved jacket. A 3.5 cm moss stitch band at the wrists, at the centre front opening, and around the chest, where eyelets provide for a ribbon insert ( no ribbon present). A 7 cm deep stocking stitch back yoke. Front also has a stocking stitch yoke, but at the front, there are two bands of the pattern across the centre of the yoke.(Pattern has a 10 row repeat). A 3 cm moss stitch band on each of the short sleeves. A 2 cm band of stocking stitch defines the skirt and yoke. Stocking stitch also defines the neckline and shoulder openings. Two little 1 cm plastic pearl buttons fasten the shoulder openings. Hand knitted, lacey patterned baby's dress, with short, raglan sleeves, and round neck.Skirt has a lacey, fan shaped pattern of six rows (repeated), and gives a scalloped effect at the hemline. Yoke is knitted in stocking stitch, and has a 1 cm nylon ribbon passing through eyelets just above the change to the pattern. Hand knitted bonnet in a lacy pattern. The circular crown is knitted in garter stitch, and as the circle increases in size, a "spoked" effect where the increase is made, gives a wheel-like effect. The main part of the bonnet has a repeat of a six row pattern. The front band of the bonnet, framing the face, is 2 cm wide, knitted in garter stitch. A 2.25 cm wide nylon ribbon attaches to the corners of this band, and ties under the chin. A narrow band of garter stitch, finishes the neck edge.costume, children's, baby bonnet

William White was one of the founders of the Hibernian Society. 09 August 1893 - Richard Sutton provided a piano for recital by Mr Bailey. Brown hard covered minute book with red spine. The building at 94 Merri St is amongst the earliest buildings in Warrnambool. It was possibly constructed before 1854 and maybe as early as 1848. The original building consisted of four main rooms under a hip roof. The outer walls were masonry , apparently rubble The Heritage Council indcate that on the balance of probabilities this was the general store of Richard Osbourne and John Moffat Chisholm built in 1847-48.The building at 94 Merri Street had historical and architectural significance to the state of Victoria. It was a rare example of surviving, pre separation building with associated interest in its materials and components It is associated with Richard Osbourne who founded the Warrnambool Examiner(1851_1889) and the town’s first historian. Architecturally, the significance of the house lay in the hand -wrought timber framing. All the major timbers in this building had been hand sawn. The Gold rush of the 1850’s saw this process mechanised. A kitchen fireplace in the rear skillion included a large block of Merri Creek Mudstone, a combination of “tufa” and clay that was used in the Warrnambool District as an excellent substitute for fire bricks. The house was demolished in 2011 and items of significance were salvaged, this brick being one. While some bricks were imported, there is evidence that there were a number of brick burning businesses in operation around this time. However it is difficult to ascertain to which group this brick belongs. Red clay rectangular brick. Upon confirmation that a new bridge was to be built, there was some discussion about the possibility of retaining the old bridge for pedestrian purposes, or part of the old bridge as a fishing platform. These letters are part of the correspondence re an organisation taking responsibility for the ongoing maintenance so the old bridge could be retained.The old bridge was constructed of locally sourced timber and was such an important structure to the town when built. School history - ref https://ourholyredeemer.cam.org.au/history In 1904 Fr. George Robinson erected a weatherboard school-hall where the present hall now stands. It was blessed and opened by Archbishop Carr on 20th November of that year. In January 1905, the Sisters of St Joseph took charge of the school. Archbishop Mannix opened and blessed the new brick school on 10th November 1918. From 1941-1972, Fr Tim Fitzpatrick was parish priest and head of the school. He is the priest on the LHS of this large school photo. Personal history: Although they lived in Prospect Street, Box Hill, John and Mary Turnbull attended Our Holy Redeemer School, as did Susan Hirst who lived across the road from the Turnbull family with her parents Ray and Shirley Hirst at 29 Prospect Street.Part of a large landscape black and white photo of a priest with a large group of children grouped as follows: Back row: 20 boys Second back row: 21 girls Second row: 16 girls Front row: 10 boys. The photograph was taken in The Nook. Terence O'Brien rented the land from Goonawarra from the 1890s to 1905 where he grew cereal crops. The terraces on the hillside were built to grow vines when the property was one of the first vineyards in the area. This diary relates to the property Kenilworth which is situated near Cavendish, 16 miles from Hamilton on the Wannon River. It was taken up by Thomas Norris in 1839 and originally carried 800 cattle and 20000 sheep on 63000 acres. By 1858 it was in the hands of John Mackersey and Thomas Bostock. In 1859 it belonged outright to John Mackersey who was there until 1870. He was considered a worthy son of a Presbyterian minister and was well regarded in the district for his contributions in church, sport and sheep breeding... However he did not do well and lost the property before going to New Zealand in 1870.This diary has detailed entries over a number of years which provides an insight into life in the 1860’s. It has a significance for Warrnambool as John Mackersey and Augustus Bostock were at one stage business partners.Hard green cover with gold lettering. 534 pages of facsimile copied diary entries.
