Ballarat Branch. ... Mr R. B. Squire, manager of the West Berry Consols, at Allendale, submitted a paper detailing what he had done tor the betterment of ventilation in the alluvial mines of Smeaton and Mary borough districts- Members gave Mr Squire every credit for the results that he claimed to have effected; the adoption of his ideas had testified to their value to mine-owners. It was painted out, however, that for want of a thorough debate of the subject with experienced men the author had unwittingly included some general statements that required modifying in some points and extending in others, in justice to other workers among the earlier and the present day managers of mines. It was decided to invite the author to meet a sub-committee on this subject![6]Handwritten letters from Richard Squire to his son Tom and Family reporting happening at the mine richard squire, tom squire, engine trouble, basil, f.l. smythe broker, trembath, w. ryall, mt mercer, flu, plant, skids, pump, c. hayes, illness, poppet, carburetor, mum, ned, shaft, balance weight, hazel squire, pearson, pulleys, syndicate, goon, len hopkins, suction, dunstown, lease, jim squire, bannockburn, nina, albert, mrs trenery, connie, jay, judy squire, cohuna, bladder attack, reports, estimates, dunstan & coy, jelbarts, barrett, flat fields, brown, gold estates, berry leads, parsley roots, share book, meredith, reef, pay sheet, colin, mr gibbs, l.r.g plan, banagwanth, mcnaughton bores, glenfine, allan, william thomas, john lynch, crawford, shelford, liz the car, trucks, chandlers, ballarat trustees, cameron, elaine, mrs read, clark, j. hayes, dunlop, dr lawrence, eye specialist, reid, mullock bank, jack squire, herman, peter's legal inc. ballarat, freddie reid, j.r. whipp, a.b. reid, grenville, leigh river plan, johnstone's, premier petrol coy, chandler's, ballarat deep leads extension, harwood & pincott, a. rice, lillas, l. e. walker, secretary for mines, pipeclay, sandstone, mr saville, weymouth & carroll, suction pipe, valves, financiers, gold mines of australia, mr hanley hunter, sadowa coy, kerang shareholder, buninyong, stanley hunter, len, fran, max, dr jones, honeycomb rock, booth, sandy mcnab, emily shaw, john cock, ross creek, mitchell, rowe, neil cameron, walker, kidney disease, holst, nellie, ronaldson's, ronaldson & tippett, brokers, investors, lockett, miller & co, wellesly, john sharpe, elizabeht ellen, old lawaluk, mining -

A segment of the Conference focussed on the role that the Yarra River has played in relation to the historical development of Melbourne. Conceived and presented by a group of prominent historians as a chronological 'trip down the river in time', and profusely illustrated with slides, this segment traced the various impacts that urban and rural growth, development of marine commerce, recreational uses, and environmental problems have had on the Yarra during a century and a half of European occupation. As no formal written paper of this combined presentation is available, these two video-tapes provide a record for anyone who has an interest in tis fascinating aspect of the Yarra's history. The speakers who combined to present this segment are identified on the cover of Tape 2. Tape 1 (2 hours) 1838-1863 Deputy ?? to Utility Early navigators of the Yarra River; developing the port of Melbourne; the gold rush and its effect on the new colony; punts and bridges; water supply; pollution of the Yarra; the discovery of gold and early settlement of the Yarra valley; floods of 1839 and 1863. 1863-1891 Formation of the Harbour Trust; Coode Canal; pollution of the Yarra by industry; aborigines, gold miners, timber getters in the Upper Yarra areas; bridges; the flood of 1891. Summary: Ringwood State School History Project (10 July 1968) In July 1968, Headmaster J. A. Baines of Ringwood State School No. 2997 appealed to former pupils, teachers and local residents for photographs, stories and historical material to assist with writing a history of the school. The project was being prepared for publication by 1970 as part of Victoria's State Education centenary celebrations. Baines explained that he had become aware of the high regard in which former teacher Miss Daisy Paddock was held by the many pupils she taught during her years at the school. Miss Paddock agreed to assist in collecting information and reminiscences for the school's history. The article followed publicity about annual reunions of former Ringwood State School pupils from the 1920s and encouraged ex-students to contribute memories, photographs and documents. Original photographs would be copied and returned to their owners. The article also noted that Ringwood State School possessed early records from State School No. 2242, Nunawading North, and discussed the connection between the old Nunawading North school and the Ringwood district. People Named in the Article: School Staff and Organisers J. A. Baines (Headmaster, Ringwood State School No. 2997) Miss Daisy Paddock (former teacher and historical researcher) The article noted that surnames found in the earliest register included: Rawlings, Witt, Falconer, Brown, Wingrove, Calder, Hammill, Williamson, Watson, Thomas, Course, Richards, Saunders, Ponner, Klutch, Ainger, Trotter, Boardman, Johnston, Wiggin, Hawkins, Larkins, Murphy, Aldridge, Costelloe, French, Forster, Kennedy, Dickson, Daldy, McHutchinson, O'Brien, Frost, Hadley, Jordan, Desreaux, McIntyre, Bloss, Jones, Loftus, Garrett, Sanders, Moore, Rose, McDonnell, Randle, Davies, Blair, Bradley, Mashiter, Turnbull, Gasparo, Sier, Miller, Ganty, Goding and Quigley, Ashley, McGee, Clements, Titus, Acland, Shanks ,Schmidt, Shannon, Pett, Leonard, Foster, Timms, Lincoln ,Cornwell ,Jenkins, Chalmers, McLaren, Lee, Tankard, Hale, Bussen, Boaston, McLindsay' Ladhams, Wheeler, Bedson, Bakewell, Hill, Leech, Bunn, Bruce, Sharp, Williams, Cox, Cook, Robinson, Drury, Nader, Reid, Kay, Sherburn, McPhee, Pomery, Sadlier, Somerville, Madden, Dobbin, May, Irby, Barelli, Emmerton, McGinniss, Banks, Smith, Sherlock, Hewish, Thomson, Antonio, Kenny, Kendall, Lelland, Maggs, Scales, Craig, de Valle, Love, Hearn Batty, Swindon, Roberts, Logan, Howell, Taylor, Blood, West, Dalziel, Claridge, Woodworth, Reed, Pickett, Herry, Inglis, Stothard, Milne, Panelli.
