The card relates to the Official Centenary Ball held in the Warrnambool Town Hall in March 1947 to celebrate the city's Centenary in 1947. Warrnambool was founded as a port settlement to service the farming interests in the area, with the first land sales held in Melbourne in July 1847. The leaflet is a programme of the Civic Memorial Service held in the Botanic Gardens in Warrnambool in February1952 on the occasion of the death of King George VI of England. This leaflet was a promotion tool of the Warrnambool business, Swintons Pty Ltd. It was used to insert stamps given by the firm when goods were purchased. When the pages were filled with 200 stamps the owner was given two shillings and sixpence in cash. It was a reward to the regular customer. William and Ann Swinton migrated to Australia in 1854 and for a decade William Swinton worked as a builder and carpenter in the Warrnambool area. In 1865 he opened a store in Timor Street, Warrnambool selling groceries, hardware, glassware and china. By 1888 the business was known as William Swinton and Sons. Branch stores were opened in Cudgee, Nullawarre, Wangoom, West Warrnambool and South Warrnambool. After William Swinton’s death, his son, Robert, became the first managing director of Swintons Pty Ltd. In 1934 the business split, with George Swinton and Sons selling furnishings, clothing and glassware and Swintons Pty Ltd selling groceries, seeds, produce and hardware. Today the Swinton family still operates a furniture and bedding store in Timor Street. This leaflet is of interest as an example of the advertising practices carried out by the firm of Swintons Pty Ltd, an important business in Warrnambool for many years. The current Swinton business in Timor Street, Warrnambool is the oldest family business in Warrnambool and, with the name Swinton associated with Timor Street businesses for 152years, it is amongst the oldest family businesses in Australia.This is a leaflet with a grey cover and four pages inside. The cover has dark blue printing and the pages have black printing and are ruled into 15 spaces. There are over 100 blue stamps stuck onto the ruled spaces. This cupro-nickel electroplated hot water jug, made c1890 by James Dixon and Sons, was once owned by the family of Geoffrey Kaye, who fondly remembers its use in his parents' London home prior to the 1930s. James Dixon and Sons, founded in 1806 in Sheffield, England, was a prominent manufacturer during the Industrial Revolution, specialising in pewter, electroplated Britannia metal, and nickel silver. The jug was created using an electroplating process, in which the base metal is submerged in an electrolyte solution containing cupro-nickel ions. This process deposits a durable layer of nickel onto the copper alloy substrate, enhancing its corrosion resistance and heat tolerance. Dr Bernie Dunn spotted a model of the merchant ship 'Ulimaroa' at Pollywoodside Museum after which he commissioned Ib Odfeldt, a Danish prize winning marine artist, to depict the vessel at sea.The painting was later gifted to ANZCA in 2006. John Traill, co-owner of Huddart Parker Ltd, named the ship in 1907 after his family home 'Ulimaroa' the building which was later purchased by the newly established ANZCA. The S S Ulimaroa was one of the popular ships in the Huddart Parker fleet that was in regular service between Australia and New Zealand from 1908 to 1934. This service was interrupted by WWI when it was commissioned by the NZ Government to carry troops. During the depression it was de-commissioned where it lay in Sydney Harbor until 1934 when it sailed under its own steam to Japan to be converted into scrap metal. Mark Cowley Lidwill was awarded an Honorary Fellowship in 1954 after his retirement to honour his working life.Mark Cowley Lidwill was born in England in 1878. His family moved to Melbourne in 1894. Lidwill studied medicine at the University of Melbourne, graduating with honours in 1902 and achieving a Doctorate in Medicine (MD) in 1905. Soon after graduation he moved to Sydney and in 1913 was appointed as the first lecturer in anaesthetics at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. That year Lidwill became the first person in the world to catch a black marlin with rod and reel. The event was celebrated in newspapers throughout the country and the marlin skeleton is now on display at the Australia Museum. Lidwill was also the designer of a machine which could deliver anaesthesia mechanically. Compact and portable, the machine delivered precise, although variable, concentrations of ether. Lidwill is also credited with developing the world’s first pacemaker. In a letter he wrote to Harry Daly in 1955, Lidwill was ambivalent about the fate of the machine: “No one would be bothered with it and they thought I was mad”.Printed certificate from the Faculty of Anaesthetists of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) awarded to Mark Cowley Lidwill as an Honorary Fellowship. The Garden of the Grieving Mother is an acknowledgement of the trauma, grief and anxiety felt by the families of Australian servicemen and women. Of the 3,801 WWI service men and women commemorated in the Ballarat Avenue of Honour, 1 in 5 made the ultimate sacrifice, giving their lives. At the centre of the memorial space is a bronze sculpture of a mother clutching a photograph of her son by sculptor Peter Corlett who has created many war memorial public artworks. As a constant observer of the natural world, I am constantly observing and drawing trees. While I never intend to anthropomorphise objects in nature, I often see trees as having strong ‘characters’. As I was looking through my journal recently I noticed a page where I had drawn a group of trees standing in a line. This immediately gave me the idea for my lithograph Family Tree. This photograph depicts people gathered in the Growers Gallery on the 11th January, 1995 at the National Wool Centre, Geelong. It shows the emotions of Murray, Ian and Kaye Appledore while bidding took place for the million dollar bale. The wool was shorn from sheep of the Wyndarra and Rockbank bloodlines. A flock of 290 sheep were kept undercover at Kadinia, the property of the Appledore family from Brim in the Wimmera district of Victoria. Their record-breaking wool was produced by giving the sheep a special diet and providing each one with a UV-protective coat. Around 180 fleeces were selected for the million dollar bale. The sale of the first bale of wool measuring below 14 microns was held in the Auction Room here at the National Wool Museum. Bidding began at 40,000 (cents a kilogram) and steadily increased until there were only two bidders left. The bidders represented the Japanese firm Aoki International and Loro Piana of Italy. The hammer fell at 1,030,000 cents per kilogram, with Aoki International paying $1,194,800 for the 116kg bale. The fleece was scoured (cleaned) at the Goulburn Wool Scour, New South Wales. The degree of preparation and care taken with the task was extreme. The Scour closed production three days before and was extensively cleaned. On the day of scouring 12 tonnes of 17 micron wool was washed to condition the water, then nine bales of extra super fine wool, worth over $300,000 was washed as a trial run. Toabo Agaki Japan was employed to process the scoured wool into suit cloth. Taobo required the scoured wool to contain 0.5% residual grease, 12% moisture and a yield of 83kg. These requirements were met. The entire staff of the Scour wanted to be part of washing the best wool in the world. Without asking for payment both the night shift and afternoon shift crews assisted the day shift in the task. The bale was fed into the scour in seven minutes and fitted into three bowls, half the scour. It completely disappeared into the dryer and the last wool was fed before the first wool was out. The clean wool was hand-packed into cardboard cartons and freighted to Japan. Aoki International, based in Yokohama Japan, cut three suit lengths from the cloth, then blended the remaining wool into an exclusive line of commercially-available suits.
