This badge was one issued to members of a club associated with the Liberty Theatre Cinema in Warrnambool. It probably dates from the 1950s. The Liberty Theatre was in Lava Street (now a Coles Store) and was opened in 1939. It was a single storey building accommodating 722 people. It closed in 1956. This badge is of interest as a souvenir of the Liberty Theatre, a cinema that was operating in Warrnambool in the mid 20th century. This is a round metal badge with blue and red lettering and two stars on a cream-coloured background. There is a meal clip at the back of the badge. The badge is much rusted and stained. These two minute books document the activities of the Warrnambool and District Amateur Cine Society from its formation in 1954 to 1981. In January 1968 it changed its title to Warrnambool Movie Club. In the 1960s the Society made films of the Florado festivals and in 1960 the Florado film was viewed by more than 3000 people when it was screened at the Liberty Theatre, Warrnambool.These minute books are of considerable interest as the Warrnambool Cine Society was very active in the second half of the 20'th Century. We now hold some of the films they made and these are historically important..1 This is a hard cover ledger with a label on the front cover. The pages have printed red lines and typed and hand written text. There are many loose pages and inserted material. The linen spine is damaged and partly detached. .2 This is a hard cover ledger with a dark blue cover with the maker's emblem on it. Warrnambool’s first Palais was established in the Hotel Mansions on the corner of Koroit and Kepler Streets and destroyed by fire in 1929. The second Palais was established at the Liberty Theatre in Lava Street. The third Palais was established in the Oddfellows Hall building in Koroit Street in 1939. Dances were held weekly and sometimes more often and attracted musical talent from the Warrnambool district and even from Melbourne with band leaders such as Tommy Davidson and Vin Mills. In 1974 the Warrnambool City Council bought the building and it was used only intermittently for entertainment purposes. Today the building is in private hands and is used for commercial and business purposes. This advertisement is of considerable significance as it comes from the Palais de Danse dance theatre which was important as a social institution in Warrnambool for over 30 years. The advertisement also reminds us of the era (1940s, 50s, 60s) when beauty pageants and Belle of the Ball competitions were popular all over Australia. This is a document in a brown plastic frame with a gold-coloured metal inside edging. The frame has a glass front. The document is a 1954 advertisement for the Palais de Danse dance floor in the Oddfellows Hall in Koroit Street, Warrnambool. The advertisement has black and red printing on a buff-coloured background. This 35mm Westrex 14 projector was purchased from Waverley Theatre (Cnr Burke Road and Waverley Road in Malvern, in 1962) last used by "Cosmopolitan Motion Pictures" as follows: from 1962 to 1967 - National Theatre, Richmond. from 1967 to 1970 - in a small leatherette on Bridge Road, Richmond. from 1971 to 1985 - Galaxy Theatre Brunswick. After that it was stored at the back of Westgarth Theatre in Northcote. This projector has a primary historic significance as it covers the largest part of the history of film shows by "Cosmopolitan Motion Pictures", and cultural/social significance since it has been used to project a number of other language films (about 10 different languages) by the company. It also carries a secondary significance of rarity being the last used projector by the company at Galaxy Theatre.This metal (most probably steel) projector is part of a number of projectors owned by "Cosmopolitan Motion Pictures". It is in dark blue/grey colour and still operational to project 35mm films if needed.
