This monograph concerns Eastern Victoria and Southern New South Wales and reviews the ethnographic record available for the study area. A test case is made of one tribe within the study area which requires further research. Currently, over 16,000 Indigenous students and 13,000 non-Indigenous students located in 260 Australian schools are involved in an Indigenous language program. More than 80 different Indigenous languages are taught. This project sought to present practice which would strengthen the quality of Indigenous language programs in schools. Charity organisation, Ladies' Harbour Lights Guild, was formed within The Missions to Seamen Institute to provide a home away from home, for visiting seamen. The booklet reviews the object of the mission and in particular the role of the Ladies Harbour Light Guild which is to ensure the moral and spiritual well-being of sailors through social events, arranging and attending picnics for the men on public holidays, presiding at the Sunday teas, making gloves, woollies and other comforts and helping to collect and distribute literature (books, papers, etc) .This paper flyer holds historical significance at a local level because it illustrates the Ladies' Harbour Lights Guild involvement in the Mission to Seafarers. The Ladies' Harbour Lights Guild grew to become a significant charity in Melbourne raising large amounts of money which helped to establish the current MTS building, supporting seafarers. non-fictionA HOMESTEAD HISTORY Alfred Joyce began a pastoral partnership with his brother in the Upper Loddon early in 1844. His reminiscences reveal events of the venture, from the departure from Melbourne with the completion of a roomy homestead, from the threat of bankruptcy, to substantial success within a decade. In writing them, he was not dependent upon his memories; the many letters he had written to his parents in London had eventually been returned to him, and those written between 1851 and his mother's death in 1858 form a continuation of his own narrative. They describe in vivid detail the upheavals that followed the discovery of gold, the transformation of both town and country, the dissolution of the Joyce brothers' partnership, and Alfred's activities as pastoralist, farmer and miller at Norwood on die Bet Bet Creek. In this third edition, for which a much wider range of illustrations is available, an epilogue continues the story of George Joyce at Plaistow and Alfred Joyce at Norwood until both properties had passed into other hands. Domestic tragedy overwhelmed the one, while droughts and mortgages eventually ruined the other. It is a record which, in the words of the American Historical Review, 'would serve as script for a first-class documentary film and deserves high rank, in the literature of pastoral pioneering'. Book review of "Guns and brooches: Australian Army Nursing from the Boer War to the Gulf War" by Jan Bassett. Jan Bassett painstakingly traced Australian Army nursing through the six major conflicts of the past ninety-three years: Boer War, World War One and Two, Korea, Vietnam and the Persian Gulf. Though nurses have been celebrated throughout literature, in reality the endured low status, appalling work conditions, low pay and occasionally betrayal by their male officers. Such as the army doctors in Papua New Guinea taking the unit's ambulances on the approach of the Japanese, leaving the nurses and wounded behind. In an incident during World War Two, British army officers in charge of a hospital ship disembarked the entire contingent of Australian nurses in Indonesia, without any resources, for disputing the distributing of medical supplies and drugs to their patients onboard. Also during World War Two nurses were increasingly given honourary officer status, with requirements for them to abide by the disciplines of the army, while lacking many privileges of their rank. Until comparatively recently the same privileges and facilities open to returned servicemen were not extended to army nurses and there are many documented cases of extreme poverty.
