Louis Robert JAMES (22 September 1920-1997) Born Adelaide, South Australia Died Sydney, New South Wales Louis James worked as a draughtsman in Adelaide. Although he had no formal art training, he started painting after World War Two quickly acquiring a wide reputation in Australia and London. Known as a printmaker he worked in England between 1949 to 1964. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. Leading surgeon and academic Sir Albert Coates (1895-1977) is one of Ballarat's most celebrated sons. A medical orderly during WWI, he returned home to become a pioneering neurosurgeon. A medical man in the worst of circumstances, Coates is often mentioned for his compassion and care in his role as a doctor in the Burma-Siam Railway POW camps. The bronze statue by Louis Laumen captures his down-to-earth nature. The Siddely Street Sailors' Home was built in 1904 to replace the former Spencer Street building. The home closed its doors on 31 January 1963. In 1965 the building was sold and it was later demolished and the site redeveloped. Ernst (Ernest) Waldemar Kaiser (1893-1968) was the last and longest serving superintendent of the home (March 1933 - March 1965). He was employed till 31 March 1965 (year of the article) when he finished up after 32 years in the position. He continued to be employed for a year or so after the home closed, probably serving as caretaker till it was sold. (see Mark Howard paper in the Great Circle (Vol.42, No1).) In 1936, the old Port Melbourne building dating from 1888 was too small and not longer suitable for the purpose of the mission. So architects were asked to design a new building. Harold Edward 'Pompey' Elliot was first and foremost a soldier. Schooled in Ballarat, he spoke often of his love of battle, and the sheer beauty of the fighting troops. This contemporary bronze sculpture has detailed elements of the uniform and posture of the military of the time and stance of a man sure of his own strength and willing to command in the harshest of conditions. The four plaques surround the sculpture and plinth detail part of the story of the Major-General and Senator. Various documents recording the discussions around helping an ex-Legatee who needed financial assistance. Louis Vavjinski was a member of Legacy in the early years (1920s and 1930s) and gave remarkable service especially to boys' classes where he was an excellent instructor. He had married a French lady at the end of World War 1 and they returned to France after the second world war. By the 1960s he was in financial difficulties and the correspondence points out that he was not eligible for an Australian pension due to living in France. A group of Legatees worked together to raise funds (over £1000) to send Louis, in one letter they approached Legacy President Ivan Layton for funds from the Presidents fund. This shows that legatees form strong bonds with each other and have a desire to help anyone in need. The Presidents Fund was created in 1932 with the aim to give the President a way to help needy cases with discretion and without having to gain approval from committees. In many cases the money was repaid by the recipient. This document was in a folder labelled President's Fund Correspondence and was with other file items about donations to help appropriate cases. The Wodonga Historical Society Haeusler Collection provides invaluable insight into life in late nineteenth and early twentieth century north east Victoria. The collection comprises manuscripts, personal artefacts used by the Haeusler family on their farm in Wodonga, and a set of glass negatives which offer a unique visual snapshot of the domestic and social lives of the Haeusler family and local Wodonga community. This digital image was produced from one of the glass negatives that form part of the collection, probably taken by Louis Haeusler (b.1887) with the photographic equipment in the Wodonga Historical Society Haeusler Collection. The Wodonga Historical Society Haeusler Collection provides invaluable insight into life in late nineteenth and early twentieth century north east Victoria. The collection comprises manuscripts, personal artefacts used by the Haeusler family on their farm in Wodonga, and a set of glass negatives which offer a unique visual snapshot of the domestic and social lives of the Haeusler family and local Wodonga community. The Haeusler family migrated from Prussia (Germany) to South Australia in the 1840s and 1850s, before purchasing 100 acres of Crown Land made available under the Victorian Lands Act 1862 (also known as ‘Duffy’s Land Act’) in 1866 in what is now Wodonga West. The Haeusler family were one of several German families to migrate from South Australia to Wodonga in the 1860s. Louis Alfred Haeusler was the 6h child of Johann Heinrich Ferdinand Haeusler and Ernestina Wilhelmine nee Rogasch. He married Ilma Margaret Ernestine Tasker in the Presbyterian Church in Tallangatta on 19th February 1919. Ilma was born in Tallangatta, Victoria in 1900 to Michael John Tasker and Louisa Ida nee Schultz. Ilma died in childbirth in 1928 giving birth to a stillborn child. She was survived by her husband, Louis Alfred Haeusler and one surviving son, John Alfred Lyell who was born in 1922.This item is unique and has well documented provenance and a known owner. The picture postcard is illustrated in a simple, child-like manner. It has a personal message on the back, perhaps sent by an adult called Lily to a young relative or friend. Its rough edges indicate that it may have been torn out of a book or from a sheet of cards. It is one of the hundreds of illustrations by artist Louis Wain, quoted as being "one of the most popular commercial illustrators in the history of England" (IllustrationChronicles.com). English artist Louis Wain (1860-1939) was famous for his illustrations of cats, many of which he gave human characteristics and personalities. Wain married Emily. They owned a cat called Peter who was a great comfort to Emily through her cancer illness and consequent death after only a few years of marriage. At 22 years old Wain gave up his job as a teacher to work full time as an illustrator. He was able to produce hundreds of drawing a year for journals, books, postcards and advertisements. Later he wrote and illustrated children's books. However he didn't benefit much from copyrighting his work as he sold his work to publishers together with the copyright, so reproductions of his works didn't earn him money. Wain said that he owned his career as a cat artist to Peter. Wain spent over a decade in mental asylums before his death in 1939.This picture postcard is an example of the work of Louis Wain, English artist of the 19th and early 20th century. He is famous for his drawings of cats, which he continued producing throughout his life. He is also known for producing the world's first screen cartoon cat, called "Pussyfoot".
