Main Road East, formerly Boundary Road, served as the municipal boundary between the City of Sunshine and the City of Keilor. The south side of the roadway fell within the City of Sunshine, while the north side belonged to the City of Keilor. Following the statewide restructuring of local government in 1994, both sides of Main Road East were brought under a single municipality, the newly formed City of Brimbank. These photographs, taken by The Advocate in 1990, were published in response to a campaign by St Albans traders who were concerned about growing traffic congestion in the centre of St Albans and the resulting loss of business to competing shopping centres such as Deer Park, Keilor Downs, and even Highpoint City.Although Main Road East was administratively divided between two councils, the community on both sides of the road functioned as a single, integrated community. Major institution, including Errington Reserve, the principal St Albans sports ground, St Albans High School, and St Albans Statio, were all located on the south side within the City of Sunshine, yet they served residents from both councils. These photographs, taken by The Advocate newspaper, record the installation of two large Canary Island Palm trees, at the entrance to Errington Reserve, Main Road East, St. Albans. The trees were supplied by the Melbourne firm Established Trees Transplanters and were originally sourced from central Victoria. St Albans Railway Station was at one stage the terminus of the suburban electrification service, an honour that it lost to Watergardens Station (Sydenham) in 2002, and subsequently to Sunbury in 2012. With the increase in train traffic, both in suburban electrification service and in the country diesel service, the gates at the St. Albans Railway Station caused significant road traffic delays including causing several fatalities. These photographs, taken by The Advocate newspaper, show the Kealba Views Hotel following the Administrative Appeals Tribunal’s decision to reject an application opposing the construction of a new bottle shop at the site. Under the proposal, the existing bottle shop (Pictured) is to be demolished and replaced with a new facility fronting Sunshine Avenue.The photographs are not the earliest view of the hotel as at one stage the hotel was a much simpler building with some detached accommodation rooms. These accommodation rooms have been demolished. The Kealba Views Hotel, now the Kealba Hotel is a suburban hotel (Pub) located on the intersection of Main Road East and Sunshine Avenue, St. Albans / Kealba. The hotel serves Kealba, St Albans, Keilor Downs, and the northern edge of Sunshine. It has been operating for several decades and is familiar landmark for locals travelling along Sunshine Avenue. The Chinese School was attached/run by the Town Mission. "THE CHINESE SUNDAY SCHOOL . The opening services of the newly erected Chinese Sunday school building in connection with the Town Mission, were brought to a close on Monday night by a tea and public meeting, held in the Mission Hall. The now building, which presents a very nice appearance, and is an improvement to that part of the Main road, was erected at a cost of £95 ; Mr H. R. Caselli acting as honorary architect, kindly prepared plans, etc. A new front fence was erected at a cost of £l6, which, with all other expenses, amounted to £126 3s 6d. Previously to the present effort collections and subscriptions were obtained as follow; —Mr Burnett's service, £l8 11s 5d; Chinese Sunday school anniversary, £9 16s 10d; concert on Easter Monday, £8 15s; Phoenix Foundry, per Mr Pethard, £7; sub scriptions, £23 8s 6d, leaving a debtor balance of £57 7s 9d. The. collections on Sunday were good. Mr Lee Young, of the Chinese store, Main road, kindly gave the tea, whioh was a valuable donation. The proceeds of the tea meeting will be about £l0. The building was prettily decorated by Mr Chessell, Mrs King Hook, and the gir!s.connected with the sohool. Mr Moorshead, the caterer, gave all the school children tea gratis- Mrs Lee Young, Miss Emma Lee Young. Miss G. Kay, Miss J. Hong Gong, Mrs King Hook, Mrs Stoneman, and Mrs Pethard waited at tables. Mr M. D. Morgan presided at the public meeting in the Mission Hall, and was supported platform by the Mayor of Ballarat East, the Revs. J. White, J. J. Perrin, and E. Turner, who delivered excellent and suitable speeches; but previously, however, offers of donations - to clear off the debt were made by Mr D. Ham, £10; the chairman, £5; Mr and Mrs Whitrick, £2 17s; a number of donors of £1 each, and less sums, which, with the collec tions, amounted to £58 16s 7d. This sum, with the sale of the cottage.on the ground, clears the debt, and leaves the com mittee a few pounds in hand towards lining and seating the building. A pleas ing feature in the meeting was the hearty giving of several Chinese Christians, including Mr Le Young; also singing by the Chinese chil dren, led by Mr Pethard. When the result was made known tbe whole, meeting stood and sang —“ Praise God from whom all blessings flow," for the success in having the place opened free of debt. Votes of thanks were passed to Mr Caselli, and all who took part in the effort: and one of the happiest meetings ever hold by the mission was brought to a close by again singing the doxology and the benediction." St Albans Square emerged during the period when Melbourne’s outer suburbs were building European‑style pedestrian plazas to support growing migrant communities. St Albans, with its large Maltese, Yugoslav, Italian, Greek, and later Vietnamese population, needed: a central meeting place, a pedestrian‑friendly shopping zone, a civic space separate from traffic, somewhere for markets, gatherings, and casual socialising. The Square was built as part of the Main Road East commercial precinct, becoming the suburb’s unofficial “town centre.”These photographs taken by The Advocate captures the installation of the 10 metre palm tree at St Albans Square is significant as the palm tree has become a long‑standing landscape marker that contributes to the visual identity and social character of the precinct. The tree was donated to Council by local Ardeer resident Peter Zafiropoulous. Positioned at the intersection of Main Road East and The Esplanade, it serves as a focal point within the plaza and reflects late‑20th‑century suburban design practices that used distinctive plantings to create recognisable civic landmarks. The tree has remained a constant feature through decades of commercial change, multicultural growth, and streetscape redevelopment, and continues to embody the continuity of community life in St Albans. The St Albans Judo Club was established in 1954, making it one of the earliest judo clubs in Victoria’s western suburbs. The club itself notes that its first 25 years (1950–1975) are the least documented, though surviving photographs show active competition and club championships by the 1960s. The club has long operated from the St Albans Community Youth Club, 309A Main Road East — the same “Tin Shed” that has been central to youth sport and community activity since the 1950s. The club’s longevity makes it an important part of St Albans’ sporting heritage: It is one of the oldest martial arts institutions in the Brimbank area. Its connection to the Tin Shed links it to the broader history of youth sport, migration, and community building in St Albans.
