This object was part of various pieces enclosed in a folio entitled "ANZAC centenary : 2014-2018 sharing Victoria's stories &​ making connections : their journey is our story" produced by the Victorian State Government which was distributed as a free resource in 2014 at the beginning of the Anzac Centenary. Original condition would have included a clear cellophane enclosure. One side of the medal appears on the card. This features a symbolic female figure of Peace, holding a sword and standing on a plinth marked 'PEACE 1919'. Behind her flies a dove, and at her left and right feet are two figures freed from their shackles. (AWM description). The medals were originally suspended from a narrow piece of red, white and blue striped cotton ribbon which appears as illustration on the card. In 1919, Australian children under 16 received a silver-coated medallion – a special reminder of the service and sacrifice of Australians at war. This specimen is a native copper specimen that is metallic. Copper is typically found in the earth's crust and is often found alongside other metals such as gold, zinc, lead and silver which all belong to the same group which is the Copper/Gold group. Copper is most commonly formed from large masses of molten lava rock which has solidified in the earth's crust and over time though different sizes and speeds of crystal growth has turned into large amounts of copper, stored in porphyry copper deposits. Copper has a distinctive colour, yet can sometime appear blue and greenish which is often caused by oxidisation or a mixture of copper and other metals. This specific specimen was recovered from Moonta, South Australia. The Moonta Mining Company was established in 1861, after a Shepard in the area noticed traces of copper. This lead to a rush in the copper mining industry which was relatively young in Australia at the time, making Moonta Mining Company one of the richest in Australia. By the 1860's, South Australia had been nicknamed the "Copper Kingdom" due to its vast amount of Large copper mines and resources. As of 2016, Australia was the second largest producer of Copper internationally, following behind Chile in first place. This copper specimen is significant historically and scientifically as it is such an important metal commonly used throughout the world in various ways. Copper is an invaluable recourse used in daily life, used in most electrical appliances as it is a great conductor of heat and electricity, as well as being soft and malleable, making it easy to bend and mould into delicate sheets and wires. Copper does not corrode and is therefore used in the production of water pipes among countless other significant necessities that are often overlooked in our society. Historically, Copper holds great significance as it was the first metal used by humans. It was discovered roughly 9000 years ago and was utilised by the Neolithic Man who learnt that heating the metal made it more malleable, thus tools and utensils were made which were far superior to the previous stone tools used by humans. This history and its connection to the current and ongoing relationship between humans and copper must be preserved and highlighted as it is integral to the history of all humankind. This violin was made by Mr Edward Richter who lived in Warrnambool for 78 of his 85 years. he was born 10/03/1853 and was an expert model maker making models of ships. The Warrnambool Museum in 1937 held a model of the Cutty Sark which he had made from timber from the wreck of the Enterprise which was wrecked on Warrnambool beach. Violins were another of of his hobbies.This violin has a connection to Warrnambool through the maker who was a long time resident of the town. It belongs to an era when many people were interested in and turned their hand to making objects such as this.The body of the violin is stained brown in colour with black neck and bridge. The four strings are nylon. The pegs and scroll are timber of a finer grain than the front and back.The tailpiece and end button are black material. The bridge is missing. The stand is rectangular with violin shape cutout, painted in red with a ply backing. Small leather strap on one end. This letter book was used by George Barber to produce letters to send to clients and to retain a copy of this correspondence. Barber was a prominent Warrnambool lawyer in the 19th century. English-born George Barber (1814-1897) came to Warrnambool from Port Fairy in 1853, making him one of the earliest lawyers in the town. In 1867 he formed a partnership with William Ardlie, and this partnership continued until Barber retired in1879. Barber was active in community affairs, being involved with such institutions as the Warrnambool Cricket Club, the Warrnambool Hospital, the Warrnambool Gas Company and the local Horticultural Society. This letter has a connection to one of Warrnambool's important early lawyers and will be useful to researchers if the handwriting can be read.This is a letter book of 750 pages with a hard grey-coloured cover and black taping on the spine. The front cover has a paper label with a handwritten title on the outside and a signature on the inside cover The cover is partly detached from the spine. The pages contain an alphabetical index at the front and copies of handwritten letters. There are many pages unused and there are three loose paper items seemingly not connected to the contents of the letter book. POSTCARD 1905-1940s Like the carte-de-visite, postcards enjoyed a collecting craze by large numbers of people, and were often kept in albums through which the interested visitor could browse. Postcards were posted or exchanged in huge numbers. Postal authorities in Australia only allowed the private printing of postcards from 1898. At this time the back of the card was reserved for the address and postage stamp, and the front was used for the message and a picture. In 1902 British authorities allowed a "divided back", so that the left side could be used for the message, the right side for the address and stamp, and the whole of the front was devoted to the picture. The Sovereign of the Seas was a historic 17th century English war ship with important maritime heritage. Wooden spirit level. Barringtons Spirit level No 650, Warranted boxwood. Made in London. Length 10" (10 inches). Bottom corners are reinforced with metal protection. It has two levels. The vertical level is within a round cut-out in one end. The horizontal level is on the top edge, surrounded by a metal plate with two cut-outs. One side of the spirit level has a ruler marked at 1/16 inch intervals, the other side is marked at 1/8 inch intervals. There is a large circle cut-out in the end that holds the vertical level. Both sides have the manufacturer’s name, the level’s model number and the material it is made of. One side also has the city of manufacture – England. This double headed hammer seems to be modified for a particular use, with the addition of a one-pronged claw on one end. It was used in the making of ship model Sovereign of the Seas. It is part of a collection of objects used by Jim Williams, maker of fine ship models from about 1930-1955. Most of the components for the models, as well as many of the tools, were handmade by Jim Williams. Jim’s family has donated the ship model “Sovereign of the Seas” and many tools, accessories and documents used in the making of this and other ship models have been donated to Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village. Ship model of HMS Sovereign of the Seas, scale model of 17th Century English war ship, was handmade and carved from plans, enclosed in airtight glass case. All components of that model, including even the smallest pulleys, were hand crafted using tools designed and made by Jim. Outstanding details include functional rigging and moving cannons. This hammer is connected with the hobby and skill of ship model making that has been crafted as a leisure activity for many generations. The hobby is often chosen by serving and retired mariners who appreciate the connection with maritime history. This hammer was modified and was used by local Warrnambool man, Jim Williams, who was employed at Cramond and Dickson clothing store, and then at Fletcher Jones menswear for 27 years. It was used in making components for the model of the historic ship, the Sovereign of the Seas.
