Ferdinand von Mueller was an examiner of botany at the Ballarat School of Mines (SMB) between 1880 and 1888. During that era he was active in donating related items to the School. When the Ballarat School of Mines Council agreed to introduce pharmacy and botany classes in 1879, it was apparent students would require access to botanical specimens in order to further their studies. Council members, who were inspired by the work of Baron Ferdinand von Mueller, authorised development of an area along the School's northern boundary, fronting Lydiard Street South, and oversaw the establishment of the new Botanical Gardens. Baron von Mueller took a practical role the development of SMB's Botanical Gardens from the beginning. He became a generous benefactor who 'donated collections of seeds and leguminous fodder plants, including valued grasses of interest and use to agriculturalists and graziers generally' to SMB over many years. The Federation University Mt Helen Campus was once the farm of John Latta and his wife Elizabeth Ann Dean. The couple married in 1867 and had three children at the time of John Latta's death (Elizabeth Ann b.1870; Mary b.1873; John b.1875). Elizabeth later married George Downing, and had another six children. The house was situated in the vicinity of the current Administration and Caro Conference Centre buildings, surrounded by an orchard, and a well under the current Albert Coates Building (Union Building). Standing alongside the hearse is Mr Wally Rose. In front him is Mr Clarrie Judd, father of Mrs Clarice Whitehead. At the front of the procession are two Church of Christ Ministers. On the right is Mr Daniel Wakefield, who was minister at the time. On the left is Mr Mudge who was the previous minister. The man wearing collars are members of the Star of Moorabbin Order, of the Sons of Temperance Friendly Society. Others are elders from the church. The picket fence was at the front of the Church and the Cypress hedge on the right, was the home of Mr Chas. Fairbank, now the Church Manse grounds.Frank T Le Page arrived in Cheltenham, ( Two Acre Village) aged 3 with his father Nicholas Le Page , a tailor from Guernsey in the Channel Islands. Nicholas purchased one of Holloway's two-acre lots and established a market garden. Frank T Le Page worked on his father's market garden from age 14, then worked as a coachman and met Tommy Bent whilst employed at Brighton Grammar School. He bought land adjacent to his father's , built Daphne Cottage in 1876 and later established the Cheltenham Cream and Butter Factory. Frank T. Le Page was member of many community groups and was a Moorabbin Shire Councillor for 25 years serving a term as President. 'The Le Pages became one of the best known Moorabbin market gardening families, with a tradition of service to communal and civic affairs that is unmatched.' Stephen Charman, aged 21years, arrived in Melbourne in 1842 as one of Henry Dendy's Emigrants. 1852 he purchased 160 acres for £328 bounded by Charman Rd and Balcome Rd. 'The Spring' was an important water source for the local Aboriginal people and then for the early settlers. Charman's first wife Harriet and their infant child died and in 1850 he married a widow with 5 children, Mary Gettens. Their first home was made of wattle and daub and they had 7 more children. Later a weatherboard cottage was built c 1855 Together they developed a market garden and specialized in marigolds which were sold for medicinal purposes to the Melbourne Chemists - Martin & Pleasance . The first Methodist Church Services were held at Spring Grove and the Charmans donated land in 1857 for the first Chapel, Cemetery and Primary School . Thomas came to Melbourne c 1853 with a large dray and bullock team and with his son took supplies to the Victorian Gold digging sites. Quite profitably. The group was led by RVBA President Bob Poulton, with Vice-President Sam Murphy, Treasurer Cliff Martin and 13 councillors. A commemorative pennant was presented to Club President Arnold Bartling. Special mention was given to Merv Pottenger and his garden helpers for the beautiful gardens around the greens.

Mary Ann Charman was a pioneer settler in the Cheltenham area of the Parish of Moorabbin c1850 Stephen Charman , who emigrated in 1942 as a Henry Dendy employee aged 21 years, sadly lost his wife and child shortly after arriving in Brighton. When Dendy could not employ him he found other work. In 1850 he met Mary Gettens a widow with 5 children who supported her family by managing her late husband’s Inn in Collins St. Melbourne. Stephen purchased land in Spring Grove, now Cheltenham, in 1852 and the family moved to the wattle and daub hut after their marriage. Mary and Stephen worked very hard to establish a market garden, poultry and pork farm . They specialised in Marigolds which they sold to Martin & Pleasance Pharmacy , Melbourne for medicinal purposes. Mary and Stephen had 7 more children and Mary still managed to find time to sell the pork, poultry and vegetables from a horse drawn cart she drove around St Kilda. 1857 Stephen donated land to the Methodist Church for a School, burial ground and Chapel in Balcombe Road. Mary died 1870. Stephen remarried in 1878 and died aged 85 years 1906. Charman Road runs from Nepean Highway , Cheltenham through Beaumaris to the Beach Road at Mentone. This list shows the names of the Pioneer settlers with the amount of Acres, the date purchased from The Crown and the Lot or Portion Number in the Land of the Henry Dendy Special Survey of Brighton 1841, in the County of Bourke , Victoria. The Squatters ,who arrived in the area first, used the land for grazing sheep and cattle. The Squatters had the right to graze unoccupied Crown land for ₤10 per year rental and a per capita payment for animals grazed. They could develop , improve and clear the land for the purpose of the tenancy but ownership was not permitted. When the land became useful The Crown put it on the market and the developers took over whilst the Squatters lost the improved land, dwellings and out buildings, there being no compensation paid. Squatters named John and Thomas Martin 1840-41; Richard and John King 1840- 1854 ; M.N.M.Moysey and M.J.Bickford 1841-1852 ; James McMahon 1846-1853 ; Daniel MacKinnon 1839- 1840. The 5120 Acres of the Henry Dendy Special Survey 1841were divided into approx. 83 Portions / Lots with varying acreage . Josiah Holloway, a speculator purchased 625 acres of the King Brothers run and re-sectioned the land into 2 acre Lots for Sale as market gardens. Draft of Indenture made __ day of __ 1940 between William Allen, Nurseryman, Ernest James Andrew, Gentleman, Ronald Walter Bradbury, Medical Practioner, Robert Sutherland Bryan, John Neville Burgoyne, Grocer, James Francis Cresp, Frederick Haines Collis, Grocer, William Hickey, Harold Claude Hutchison, David Andrew Lyon, Garage Proprietior, Albert E. Parsons, James Clyde Rains, News Agent, Eric Nicholl Staff, Store-keeper and William Walker, Plumber all of Eltham in the State of Victoria and Anton William Brinkkotter, Poultry Farmer in the said State and Sidney William Browne, Hotel Proprietor of Lower Plenty and Robert David Taylor, Secretary of Rosanna (the Committee) to appoint John Neville Burgoyne, William Hickey and David Andrew Lyon as Trustees to replace William James Capewell, Ernest James Andrew and George Birchall. William James Capewell, Butcher and Ernest James Andrew, News Agent and both of Eltham and George Harrison were the original Trustees appointed in the Declaration of Trust dated 5 August 1922. George Birchall replaced George Harrison 6 August 1925 but after being absent from the State for more than two years and William James Capewell and Ernest James Andrew desirous of being discharged as Trustees, under the power of appointing new Trustees vested in the Committee, the Committee resolved on 14 November 1935 that Albert Henry Charles Price, Cecil Martin and Albert John Fahle should be Trustees in place of George Birchall, Ernest James Andrew and William James Capewell however the said resolution was never carried into effect and the said writing was never completed. Subsequently in 1940 Albert Henry Charles Price, Cecil Martin and Albert John Fahle each resigned in writing as Trustees even though never appointed and so the Committee appointed John Neville Burgoyne, William Hickey and David Andrew Lyon as Trustees in place of William James Capewell, Ernest James Andrew and George Birchall. Originally purchased in 1856 from Thomas Roberts, Yeoman of Little Eltham, for £10 for use by the Wesleyan Chapel, represented by indentured Trustees, Rev. Barnabas Shaw Walker, Minister of the Pentridge Circuit, Francis Thomas, Farmer of Keelbundora, William Harriman, Blacksmith of Nillumbik, Nicholas Rodda, Farmer of Nillumbik, Aaron Grimshaw, Farmer of Greensborough, Joseph Cooper, Gardener of Keelbundora, Peter Dredge, Scholmaster of Jika Jika and Samuel Jeffrey, Farmer of Jika Jika. Lot 20 of Subdivision of Portion 13, Section 4 of the Parish of Nillumbik in the County of Evelyn was located on the southern side of Henry street in Little Eltham North, where the current Our Lady Help of Christians Catholic Church is situated. It became the location of the Eltham Rechabite Hall. In 1893 a new hall was built and further enlarged in 1919. At the commencement of 1922, the property was purchased from the Independent Order of Rechabites with publicly subscribed funds and a new hall built at a cost of £750 and improved road access constructed to reduce the grade, running from Dudley Street to Henry Street. This hall was eventually replaced with the new Shire Offices and Hall built on the corner of Arthur Street and Main Road, which was opened in 1941.
