Wood was an RAAF Fitter/Armourer with overseas service. he served for 4 years and 3 months and was demobilised on 3 December 1945 This is the standard set of medals for a member of the Defence Forces in WWII with service in the islands to our north.Set of five service medals, with miniatures, in wooden cigar box, with leaflet on medal entitlements and Interim Discharge Certificate for 42333 Sgt S. Wood, RAAF. Consists of 1939-1945 Star, Pacific Star, Defence Medal War Medal 1939-45, Australian Service Medal 1939-45. Stars are inscribed 42333 S.T.Wood on rear. The medals have the same inscription on the lower outside rim. Box has "S.T.Wood" and some other illegible characters scratched into wood on upper outside surface.

Copy of page 189 of B5204 Roll 12 from the National Archives of Australia being a part of a list of New South Wales Army Medical Corp personnel "entitled to the South Africa Medal and Clasps, under the Army Order granting the Medal, issued on 1st April, 1901". Section of the list shown on both copies include Lady Superintendent Gould [?], Superintendent Johnston and twelve Nursing Sisters, not all of who where entitled to the medal. One Nursing Sister Newton who on the first copy has a notation of "No Medal" on the second copy has additional notation of "On Black List". No clear reason as to why the copies are different [first copy likely obtained in 1980's or 1990's], second copy printed from NAA on 20250121. Two copies of same document from different eras, table of names and criteria related to medal entitlement. The two copies show slightly different information held together with a white archival paperclip. First copy is not good and text difficult to read, second is from date of cataloguing print out of current digitised version of same on National Archives of Australia catalogue. Robert Joseph TULIP enlisted in the RAAF No 148496 on 12.4.1944 age 28 years. At wars end he re engaged in the Interim Airforce in 1946. Frederick HAYES enlisted in the 2nd AIF on 28.6.1940 Regt No VX41213 age 30 years. He embarked with the 2/24th Bn on 5.2.1941 and disembarked in the Middle East on 23.3.1941. The unit was soon in Tobruk. He was hospitalised on 27.7.1941 with Otitis Media a serious Ear Infection. he was returned to Australia disembarking on 23.5.1942. He was discharged from the Army on 2.5.1943 holding the rank of CPL in the 2/1st SEC Aust Kit Store. This object was part of various pieces enclosed in a folio entitled "ANZAC centenary : 2014-2018 sharing Victoria's stories &​ making connections : their journey is our story" produced by the Victorian State Government which was distributed as a free resource in 2014 at the beginning of the Anzac Centenary. Original condition would have included a clear cellophane enclosure. One side of the medal appears on the card. This features a symbolic female figure of Peace, holding a sword and standing on a plinth marked 'PEACE 1919'. Behind her flies a dove, and at her left and right feet are two figures freed from their shackles. (AWM description). The medals were originally suspended from a narrow piece of red, white and blue striped cotton ribbon which appears as illustration on the card. In 1919, Australian children under 16 received a silver-coated medallion – a special reminder of the service and sacrifice of Australians at war. The model of the horse and spring cart was made by Mattaeus (Martin) Schaefer. Martin was awarded a Silver Medal for the model at the Bendigo Juvenile Exhibition in April 1879. At the Melbourne Intercolonial Juvenile Industrial Exhibition, 1880, Martin was awarded a gold medal for the 'woodwork of model spring cart' (Bendigo Advertiser 6 March 1880) 'Mr. Schafer (sic) is certainly entitled to the gold medal awarded to him for his very beautiful model of a spring cart.
