The vase was made from the liquefaction that came out of the Christchurch earthquake of 22 February 2011. The vase was gifted to the College by Professor Edward Shipton (known as Ted) on his retirement as Dean of the Faculty of Pain Medicine, and from Council. Professor Shipton is from New Zealand. The gift was accompanied by a card with the following inscription: "Thank you for allowing me to be a small part of your great institution as Councillor and Faculty Dean these past two years. My gift to the College is a small vase. This vase was made from the liquefaction that came out of the 22 February 2011 Christchurch Earthquake. A book review of 'Guns and Brooches: Australian Army Nursing from the Boer War to the Gulf War' by Jan Bassett. More volunteer army nurses have come from rural Victoria than elsewhere in Australia. One hospital matron who volunteered for the front suring the Boer War wrote. "No one who has experience the satisfaction that arises from such work of this stature...ever cares to go back to the dill routine of earing a living in any othe the other spheres at present open to women." Not much seems to have changed by the Vietnam War. In an inquiry, in 1968, into why army nursing was failing to attract enough recruits, it was revealed that young nurses 'were disappointed at the lack of dramatic nursing opportunities.' Though a dense, turgid tome, the book educates on such things as the misery endured by many army nurses on return to Australia after the two World Wars, who tried to exist on their tiny gratuities only for many to fall into destitution and starvation. The nurses who joined up because they admired 'order and efficiency' soon found that the army is anything but. Copy of page 189 of B5204 Roll 12 from the National Archives of Australia being a part of a list of New South Wales Army Medical Corp personnel "entitled to the South Africa Medal and Clasps, under the Army Order granting the Medal, issued on 1st April, 1901". Section of the list shown on both copies include Lady Superintendent Gould [?], Superintendent Johnston and twelve Nursing Sisters, not all of who where entitled to the medal. One Nursing Sister Newton who on the first copy has a notation of "No Medal" on the second copy has additional notation of "On Black List". No clear reason as to why the copies are different [first copy likely obtained in 1980's or 1990's], second copy printed from NAA on 20250121. Two copies of same document from different eras, table of names and criteria related to medal entitlement. The two copies show slightly different information held together with a white archival paperclip. First copy is not good and text difficult to read, second is from date of cataloguing print out of current digitised version of same on National Archives of Australia catalogue. This painting was presented to the St Vincent's civilian medical team by the people of An Giang Province, Vietnam, in recognition of their work in the area. St Vincent's sent four civilian clinical teams to Long Xuyen, South Vietnam, 1965 - 1966 as part of an aid program administered by the Australian Department of External Affairs to assist Vietnamese medical and paramedical personnel and provide medical aid to everyone who needed it. The service of the Australian civilian teams who went to Vietnam 1964 - 1972 was recognised with a special plaque within the grounds of the Australian War Memorial in October 2008. This item has historical significance because it is a memento of the hospital's involvement in a nationally significant wartime aid program to South Vietnam. This is a set of 24 photographs taken on a CO’s Parade held at the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo on the 1st of October 1990. Wearing of non-prescription sunglasses by most personnel on the parade was normally not permitted. On this occasion they wore sunglasses as a prank halfway through the parade, given MAJ Burns at this time began wearing sunlight-sensitive photochromic glasses and was the inspecting officer, rather than the CO LTCOL Rene van den Tol.
