A certificate typed on Melbourne Legacy letterhead to certify that the recipient had completed a leadership training course in August 1979. It meant the junior legatee was qualified to assist in the youth classes. It also mentions the Junior Legatee is entitled to what the 'Leader' badge on her uniform. Hence it was a leadership course for female junior legatees. This uncompleted certificate is unnamed and is not signed by the President, which was L/ W R Mehan in 1979, so it had not been awarded and could be a generic draft of a certificate for the files.A record that Legacy provided advancement opportunities for the girls in the classes. A handbook is issued to all Legatees to assist them with their work with the legacy widows; eg childrens' education, welfare, accommodation, health. A quick easy guide to services provided by Melbourne Legacy such as bursaries, medical care, financial assistance etc for Legatees use. It was reissued annually for many years prior to keeping this information electronically. Many issues are held at 00305. A programme for an Annual Demonstration held at the Melbourne Town Hall on 28th & 29th October 1966. Throughout the year Melbourne Legacy provided classes for Junior Legatees such as dancing, gymnastics and eurythmics, the Demonstration was an annual event to showcase their skills. Melbourne Legacy conducted Annual Demonstrations / Parades from 1928 through to 1979, usually held at Melbourne Town Hall. The Northern Branch of Melbourne Legacy was formed in 1984 with a amalgamation of the Heidelberg Branch and Northcote/Preston/Whittlesea Branch. This document outlines the history of both branches. Heidelberg Branch was established 16th October, 1957. The Northcote/Preston/Whittlesea was established 3rd May, 1958. The history was compiled in 1988 by Legatee John N Roscholler and updated by Legatee Ian Harrison and Legatee Derithe Harrison in an addendum. It covers the formation of Widows Clubs. Preston/Reservoir was July 1985. Northcote began in May 1986, Heidelberg was November 1983. The Heidelberg Boys Club was established in 1958 and lasted until December 1979. Melbourne Legacy has relied for funding on grants as well as donations, and continues to do so in the absence of any government funding. This circular was issued to both Legacy Club of Melbourne and The 'Carry On' Club of Melbourne, and signed by presidents: JHB Armstrong for Legacy and WL Sinclair for Carry On. It was after a series of annual conferences between the two clubs and shows an agreement between the clubs on the spheres of work carried out by each club to prevent duplication of effort. As a general rule, Legacy would concentrate on the care of widows and children of DECEASED servicemen; the 'Carry On' Club would focus on the LIVING ex-servicemen and their dependents. A note was made that the Intermediate Legacy Club was a group formed of sons of deceased soldiers who had progressed through the Junior Legacy Club and now 'interest themselves in the physical well-being of totally and permanently incapacitated ex-servicemen.' When an ex-serviceman dies leaving dependents the case will be transferred from the Carry On Club to Legacy, with the occasional exception. Employment: 'Legacy will pass to 'Carry On' the employment opportunities or vacancies that can be filled by ex-servicemen or their dependents in instances were Legacy is unable to fill such vacancies from it's own register' and vice versa. Welfare: close liaison is important and copies of reports will be transferred when transferring cases. These resolutions and discussions about them are shown in the minutes of the "Combined Meeting of Members of Legacy and 'Carry On' Clubs held at Legacy Club Rooms on 27 May 1937, which is the second document included here. Present for Legacy were Legatees Armstrong, Russell, Birrell, Kemsley, Clements. And present for the 'Carry On' Club were Messrs Hall, Pears, Masterson, Neil and Ramsay. The notation H10 in red pen shows that it was part of the archive project that was trying to capture the history of Legacy. A record that Legacy was in contact with similar clubs with the intent of sharing the work load and not duplicating effort. Begins with the flag raising ceremony at Somers Camp and then moves to Westernport Airfield where the boys are seen going for flights in Cessnas whilst others learn archery and play volleyball. Moves on to beach activities and dinghy sailing supervised by Legatees. Back at Somers there is a comic performance of Goldilocks in front of a large audience of younger Junior Legatees and the supervising Legatees, which ends with a bearded Goldilocks being taken away in a police car. A service in the bush chapel is then shown before we see the older boys throwing one of their number off a jetty. A volleyball game completes the film. There is no indication of date, but the clothes seem to be 1960s/70s. This film has been digitised to preserve its content. Melbourne Legacy gratefully acknowledges the support of the Victorian Government and Public Record Office Victoria for making this possible.Depicts the work done by Legacy volunteers in helping Legacy families of the time. The photo shows a Junior Legatee, now Captain Len Frazer being inducted into Melbourne Legacy as a senior legatee on 26 January 1943. See also item 00040 for another photo of the event. The notes on the photo identify Legatees Stan Savige, Frank Doolan and W Cremor (ex-Pres. 1936), the man speaking is President Os Gawler, three others in the photo are unknown. Captain Len Frazer had been a Junior Legatee after his father died in the first World War at Ypres. He then served in World War 2 and on his return qualified to become a member of Melbourne Legacy. His service number was VX15205, full name Leonard Thomas Frazer. From Trove a newspaper article describes his background. "Argus (Melbourne, Vic. : 1848 - 1957), Wednesday 27 January 1943, page 5 FIRST JUNIOR LEGATEE IN SENIOR CLUB Capt L. T. Frazer was initiated to membership of Legacy Club by Maj-Gen S. G. Savige, founder of the club, at a simple ceremony yesterday. He was the first returned soldier of this war, and first junior Legatee, to be admitted to membership. Joining junior Legacy in 1928, Capt Frazer, whose father was killed in the last war, was a foundation member of the Intermediate Club, of which he became president, and he gained the right to admittance to the senior club by having seen active service with the AIF. Enlisting in April, 1940, he served in the Middle East, Greece, and Crete. His father was killed in action with the first AIF at Ypres. Capt Frazer, who joined the Melbourne City Council as an engineering junior in 1928, graduated to senior MCC engineering assistant before he enlisted. At present he is attached to Army Engineers, LHQ.
