The supper cloth was brought to Australia and presented to the Shields family. Mary Ann Stebbing (nee Shields) then handed it on to her daughter Nancy Jean, who married Alfred Marshall in 1937. On Nancy's death, the cloth came into the possession of her daughter, Nolene Menz (nee Marshall).This large cloth with its noteworthy hand stitching is an example of the range of textile memorabilia generated during World War 1. It links a local Buffalo River family to the 1914-18 conflict.Framed embroidered white linen cloth depicting a tribute to ANZAC soldiers by the women of Belgium, dated 1915. The tribute takes the form of an ANZAC soldier and words in the English language.Accompanying the ANZAC soldier presenting arms are the centred words: "ANZAC 1915" "OUR HERO, WE'RE PROUD OF HIM". Around the border of the cloth it reads: "WE ARE PROUD OF AUSTRALIAN BRAVE SOLDIERS WHO NOBLY DID RESPOND TO THE FIGHT FOR KING AND COUNTRY. HONOUR ON US ALL AND TO AVENGE BRAVE BELGIANS WRONGS. William Nixon, son of James Nixon and Alice (Roberts) Nixon was married to Ilma Muriel (Cadwallader) Nixon on 2 Apr 1902 in Orbost. They had six children - Llewella Adele (Nixon) King, Sydney William Columbo Nixon, Arthur Harry Nixon, Jack Warton Nixon, Claudine Frances (Nixon) Taylor and Daphne Joyce (Nixon) Menz Damage estimated at £500,000 was caused by the 1934 floods in the Orbost district. This 1934 flood was devastating, destroying a section of the 1922 Orbost bridge, wrecking fences, bridges and roads, dumping silt and debris on the rich river flats and drowning cattle. Note: although this card has the date 1934 written onto the rear, the flood incident depicted most likely dates from 1920 (ref. Sargasso was a monthly newspaper of the Ballarat University College/University of Ballarat Student Union newspaper. Matthew Cuthbert worked on Sargasso from 1989 to 1991 when it was created on LC 2 Apple Mac, at that time one of the best Apple labs in the country. "The Ballarat Courier had four machine, we had a suite." (Matthew Cuthbert, 2022) Mathew Cuthbert was the founder of ‘Integration,’ an alterntive venue and nightclub, with local college band, ‘The Fat Thing’ . This club had a following of Grunge and New Indie music from the UK, namely Madchester, straight from the decks of the Chevron, Melbourne. He went on to study interactive Multimedia at Central Saint Martin’s, London. "It was a great time at Ballarat, a melding of arts, humanities, friendship, youth and a Bohemia of sorts."
