This Spanish Mission style building first opened in 1917 and has been in continual use since as the Mission to seamen and later Mission to Seafarers at a location initially known as the extension to Flinders St near the Australian Wharf and later address known as 717 Flinders St. "The Extension Bond and Free stores" building which can be seen in the background can be identified on an aerial photograph of the area dated 1927.This image besides showing an early view of the current Mission to Seafarers building also features a glimpse of the early 20th C (Flinders St) Extension Bond ( Store ?) building positioned to make use of the Yarra-side docks known as the Australian Wharf.Positive photograph on medium format glass slide ; b & w image of the chapel and bell tower of 1917 Mission Building, extension to Flinders St. with a loaded horse-drawn dray or wagon being driven in the foreground. . This brick was salvaged by the donors, members of PMHPS and former residents of Port Melbourne from the ruins of the Art Deco Mission to Seamen also known as King George V memorial building, built in 1937 by Harry Norris and demolished in 1995. Used in their former courtyard the donors, who recently moved to Docklands offered the brick to MTSV when they sold their Port Melbourne house in 2017.One of the few remaining tangible materials from the architecturally significant Mission to Seamen, the George V Memorial building dedicated in 1937 and demolished in the 1990s. The Brick adds to the MTSV collection of Port Melbourne material from the 1930s. See also Research and clippings folder and records such as 0641 and 0233. Margaret Evelyn Evans Gordon married Arthur Lyulph Stanley, 5th Baron of Alderley, in 1905. Appointed K.C.M.G. in 1914, Sir Arthur served as Governor of Victoria from 1914-20. Lady Stanley became the first President of the Australian Red Cross, Victoria, in 1914. The foundation stone of the St Peter chapel was laid by Lady Stanley on 14 November 1916. The trowel (see item 2074) used for the laying of the stone was gifted to Lady Stanley and ended up in Toronto, Canada, where one of her daughters, Victoria was living. The trowel was presented to the Mission in 2019. A picture of the stone can be seen on the article of the Leader dating from Saturday 25 November 1916, page 25.
