The item was awarded to Dr Harry Jenkins for a motorcycle race held in NSW on 16/02/1910. Jenkins was an avid, amateur racing car driver and motorcycle rider and had a dental practice in Collins Street Melbourne. He owned Churchill Island from 1936 to 1963 and bequeathed the island to Margaret Campbell on his death. Sister Campbell had been nurse to his disabled son and wife and she lived on the island from the time of World War Two. This item was given to Arthur Evans, a family friend, on the day of the auction sale of artifacts when Margart Campbell sold the island in 1973.This trophy demonstrates Harry Jenkins' prowess of motor sport and his competitive spirit. This is one of very few orginal items found within the Churchill Island museum collection.Large solid metal three-dimensional object featuring 4 identical cylinders open at one end. All 4 cylinders are joined, domed in profile and designed to represent the four cylinders of a motor bike. The object is engraved and has silver plated hallmarks. Wal Jack had an extensive range of correspondents throughout Australia and the world. This set are two letters from Alwyn Marshall of Toolamba, who travelled extensively. His first letter discusses tramways in Sydney, the type of trams in use, Brisbane tramways, NSW Railways on the Sydney to Brisbane line, Queensland railways, the Sandy Hollow line and the wooden trestle bridge near Nayook. He used a motor bike for his Australian travels. This stock horse saddle was probably used in the mid 1900's. This was the period when cattle mustering was at its prime. The movement of cattle was by mounted stock horse only and not by other methods. Northern territory cattle stations in the late 1900's started to use helicopters for "cattle control". In the KIEWA Valley/Bogong High Plains and other rural cattle producing areas required well trained stock horses and stockmen for cattle control. It is only in the later 1900's that motor bikes and four wheeled quad-bikes have taken over, in part, from the mounted stockman.This horse saddle is very significant to the Kiewa Valley because of the early introduction of cattle stations in what initially was regarded as a semi remote location. The maintenance of cattle in the Kiewa Valley is and was an important requirement. A good stock horse saddle as and is important, especially during the period when cattle were grazed on the Bogong High Plains. The mustering and and moving cattle from the valley pastures to the high country was a demanding and dangerous exercise requiring "sure footed" stock horses.The "good" saddle was a vital part of this cattle mustering. A scientific study started in 1947 to study the impact of grazing cattle on the natural Alpine and sub Alpine vegetation found grazing cattle had an adverse affect on the natural Alpine and sub alpine vegetation, and grazing on the plains was stopped by the Victorian Government in 2005.This "camp draft" in the High Plains could take up to six weeks.This all leather "stock horse" saddle shows plenty of wear.
