Heather Pitman studied at the School of Mines and Ballarat College of Advanced Education and was awarded the Civil Engineering Scholarship in 1977. Heather broke down barriers in engineering with an integrity that earned her tremendous respect in the sector and led to her becoming the first female Head of Engineering for the City of Ballarat. She was the first of a new breed of engineers to consider the urban water cycle in its entirety and not in isolated parts, a radical approach at the time. In her honour, the Pitman Benjamin Engineering Prize was founded, to recognise students like Heather, who have chosen not to accept the status quo, but instead to change the world to make it better for all. Heather Durant (nee Walton) began as an Assistant Librarian at the SMB Campus in 1951. In December 1961 she resigned from the position due to her approaching marriage. No replacement was found so she returned in a "part-time position". She progressed to head librarian. Heather resigned again in 1962 and took a break for eight years. She then returned to the school. Combining the two periods of work she was employed for almost 50 years. During her time with the University of Ballarat she made an important contribution to the operation of the SMB Library. At times she was put in charge and worked to maintain library standards and collections through her work in library acquisitions and cataloguing. Over the years she witnessed the changes that occurred when technology was introduced and the growth of the University and TAFE divisions.women of note, teacher, ballarat school of mines, heather walton, heather durant, smb campus, librarian, resigned to marry, part-time work, library standards, and collections, acquisitions and cataloging, technology, 50 years service, 1951-2005 -

Book, Diary of R.W. Richards, c1960
Dick Richards was a member of the Shackleton Trans Antarctic Expedition Ross Sea Shore Party. He later became Principal of the Ballarat School of Mines. The text for this book was typed by Ballarat School of Mines librarian Heather Durant, who remembered that at times it was difficult to read the writing due to whale blubber oil from the lamps on the paper. Heather was told that Dick Richards only started keeping the diary when ther became a chance the Ross Sea Shore Party may not survive. Heather remembered Dick Richards affectionately - he always carried a pipe and called her 'girlie'.Blue hard covered book of 14 pages. It is the verbatim copy of the diary kept by Dick Richards from 23 February 1916 to 19 March 1918, during the Shackleton trans-antarctic Expedition 1914-17.Bookplate inside cover - "Ex Libris School of Mines and industries. Book, University of Ballarat Annual Report, 2011, 2011
Federation University Australia was established on 1 January 2014. Formerly known as the University of Ballarat, its enabling legislation was the University of Ballarat Amendment (Federation University Australia) Act 2013. Although formally created as a University in 1994, the University of Ballarat had a lineage back to 1870 with the establishment of the School of Mines Ballarat, making it the third institution of higher learning to be established in Australia and the first to be established in regional Australia. On 1 January 1994, Ballarat University College became the University of Ballarat and in 1998 the University merged with three TAFE Institutes to become a dual sector institution with multiple campuses. On 1 January 2014, the University of Ballarat amalgamated with the Monash University Gippsland Campus to form Federation University Australia. The Gippsland Campus also had a long lineage dating back to 1928 with the establishment of the Yallourn Technical School which became a predecessor institution to the Gippsland College of Advanced Education formed in 1968. In 1990, it was renamed the Monash University College and in 1993 became the Gippsland Campus of Monash University. Federation University Australia, or FedUni, is Australia’s newest public University. Headquartered in Ballarat, Victoria, the University offers programs in Higher Education and Vocational Education and Training to regional Victoria and beyond. The University’s commitment to educational and social equity, teaching excellence, research distinction, environmental sustainability and regional capacity building has enabled it to develop in a way that draws on its proud heritage to inform its future. Its regional character sets a framework for the University’s priorities but does not constrain it from serving wider community interests, nationally and internationally. With campuses from Horsham in the west of the state, to Churchill in the east, the name Federation University Australia was chosen to convey the scope and capacity of an expanded regional university with a federated network of campuses contributing to a new and different Australian university.Soft covered annual report of 152 pages with a photo of a building under construction on the cover.
