This beautifully made ship model is a side relief of the steam ship “S.S. Nelson”, which was launched in 1877. The model’s case stands out because of its ornately carved internal frame. Relief models of ships, sometimes called half models, were often built by the shipbuilders as an exact scale model of the finished ship. The shipbuilders would use the model to ensure that the design was balanced. They would use the model as a point of reference during building. Also, ship models were used to demonstrate the designs to prospective buyers. It is not known whether this model of the “S.S. Nelson” was made for these purposes. HISTORY of the “S.S. Nelson” During the period 1840-1890 shipping was the cheapest and most practical means of carrying produce and goods to and from coastal towns such as Warrnambool. In the 1850s regular domestic steamer services began and by 1870 the passenger trade was booming. Passengers were taken to the ship’s side in small boats called lighters, which took it to ships at anchorage in Lady Bay, then climbed aboard up ladders or gangways. Their fare covered accommodation Saloon/Cabin section (higher class and more expensive) or the Steerage section (lower class and less expensive, below deck level). Produce included livestock such as pigs and fowls, and dairy products, bales of wool, and potatoes. The goods were loaded from the Warrnambool Jetty into the lighters. The S.S. Nelson was built by Messrs Blackwood and Gordon of Port Glasgow for a cost £25,000 in 1877. She was an iron screw steamer with an overall length of 200 feet, beam 25.5 feet and a depth of hold of 19.4 feet, which gave her a gross measurement of 649 tons. Her engines gave her a best speed of 13 knots and a maintainable speed of 12 knots. She was described as a handsome, star decked, efficient steamship, fitted with accommodating for 75 first class passengers in a saloon, and 40 second class passengers in a cabin. The S.S. Nelson arrived in the colony of Victoria on March 9th, 1877. She was first registered in Warrnambool by the Warrnambool Steam Packet Company under the management of Mr William Evans, and employed in the coastal trade of south west Victoria. She was very popular in 1878, registered under the new ownership of the Western Steamship Navigation Company, trading between Melbourne, Warrnambool and Portland. Captained John Nicholson commanded the S.S. Nelson after the previous captain, Thomas Smith, was suspended in 1882 for six months by the Victorian Steam Navigation Board following the collision between the S.S. Nelson and the S.S. Julia Percy. Other Captains include S Drewet and John Thompson. The S.S. Nelson was sold to Messrs. Huddart, Parker and Co. and re-registered in Melbourne on June 23rd, 1890. The new owners intended to use her for their Bass Strait crossing between Melbourne, Victoria and Launceston, Tasmania. On the night of Friday, June 27th 1890, under the command of Captain Carrington, she was on her way to Launceston on her first crossing for her new owners. She had no passengers and very little cargo and was to return to Melbourne with passengers the following morning. She was only 21 hours out of the dock when she struck Porpoise Rock in the Tamar River. All crew of 25 were saved but the bulkheads gave way and she rapidly filled before keeling over and disappearing in approximately 130 feet of water. The new owners had fully insured the almost 14-year-old S.S. Nelson with the Australian Alliance Insurance Company and she had only been in their possession for four days. This ship model of the S.S. Nelson is significant for its connection with the steam screw ship S.S. Nelson, one of a fleet of vessels owned by the Warrnambool Steam Packet Company. The S.S. Nelson was specifically built and purchased for the Victorian coastal trade business of the late 19th century, when shipping was the cheapest and most practical means of transporting goods and passengers between Victoria’s coastal towns and the major port at Melbourne. The photograph shows the Royal Mail wagon outside Herbert's General Store in the main street of Orbost. This store was one of the first in Orbost, located in the lower (southern) section of Nicholson Streety. Lancelot Herbert had come to Orbost in c.1886 to become a partner in the store with Massey Coote. After Mr Coote's death in 1891, Herbert bought out the partnership. Progressively, the Herbert family went on to own many businesses in Orbost, Cann River and Noorinbee. This is a pictorial record of transport in 19th century Orbost. This trouser hanger was used by Linda Hine's father , Charles Joiner, formerly of Orbost. Charlie was born at Newmerella on 13/03/1908, the eldest of 7 children of Charles William Joiner and Louisa O'Neill. He farmed in the Orbost district and at Hillside near Bairnsdale. Charlie past away on 6th March 1998, aged 89, at the Bairnsdale Hospital. HERBERT & Co. was one of the earliest stores in Orbost, located on the corner of Ruskin and NIcholson Streets, closing in 1970 and demolished in 1975. HERBERT & Co. also had stores at Noorinbee and Cann River, along with other business's including several garages.This item is significant because it is a functional and a promotional item relating to Herbert and Co. whose owners had numerous businesses in east Gippsland from 1890's to 1970's.Two flat wooden lengths 23cms long and 2 cms wide, lined on inside of hanger with red felt material, connect by a silver coloured metal piece joining the two wooden lengths to form a hanger shape which can open and close to secure item to be hung. These items were relics from the Herbert's Stores, Orbost, demolished mid 1970s. Herbert's Stores operated from c.1886 to 1970 in Orbost and also in Cann River. In Orbost, the main store was located on the s.e. corner of Nicholson Street and Ruskin Street. A feature of the store was the Lamson Cash-Carry mechanism which transported money and receipts to and from a central cashier. This was a rapid-wire mechanism attached to the ceiling of the shops. These items are significant because of their association with the Herbert's Stores in Orbost. Also, these itemns are a rare survivors of the Lamson cash-carry mechanisms which were installed in many larger shops in Australia during the first half of the 20th century.A collection of items from the Herbert's Stores, Orbost. This is an intriguing small pamphlet from World War 1, printed in Orbost by the Snowy River Mail. The exact date is not stated, apart from Saturday 8 August at 10am. It could be advertising the time and date of an edition of the S R Mail with special reports on the War in Europe. These reports were provided by Reuters and compiled by the S R Mail. The S R Mail was an important link for Orbost district citizens with the outside world, and provided information on the conduct of World War I. Also, the district provided a number of local men and boys as volunteers to the War and news was really vital. This pamphlet is significant because it relates to the importance of the Snowy River Mail in providing essential updates on the conduct of World War I.A single sheet of cream/yellowish paper with black printing. This is one of many photos taken following the devastating Snowy River flood of 1971 which inflicted huge impact on the Orbost area, including access roads to Orbost. This photo shows road damage at the southern end of Nicholson Street, adjacent to the Snowy River. This was the main road leading in to Orbost and also the Princes Highway in 1971. This set was given to Mr and Mrs Henry Powell by Herbert's Store when their account was finalised. Herbert's Snowy River Store was at the lower end of Nicholson Street in Orbost. This magazine cost $2.50 and was produced to support the East Gippsland Red Cross Flood Appeal. Following heavy rain in East Gippsland in June, 1998, major flooding occurred in the Mitchell, Nicholson, Tambo, Snowy, Brodribb and Bemm Rivers. Other streams in the region also experienced high flows during this time. Snowy River Dry Cleaners was situated in Stanley Street, Orbost (previously a hat factory). There was also a shop in the CBD of Orbost. Basil Dowie moved his dry cleaning business from Nicholson Street to 31 Stanley Street where Stuart Hats had been. He had originally bought the business from Laurie Harrington in August 1950.
