The Cash Accounts contain the names and transaction details of all Gembrook Nursery clients and gives an insight into the scale of the Nursery operations. Cash book of Gembrook Nurseries (Nobelius Nursery) years 1903 - 1951. The business was purchased by S and L Linton in 1955, but continued to operate under the name of CA Nobelius and Sons. Donated to the museum as a record of a major employer and historical figure of the area. The volumes were found by Clem Worrell in the basement of a shed on the former nursery site. Early volumes include records of personal as well as business expenses incurred by CA Nobelius. Also included are records of tree sales, names of employees and customer details. This photograph depicts employees of C. A. Nobelius on a fruit growers employee picnic. It is disputed where this photograph was taken - while we have suggested it was in the Cockatoo Creek area (now simply Cockatoo), the State Library's catalogue entry for another copy of this photograph suggests it was likely the Dandenong Ranges based on the Sassafras-Olinda label on one of the carts. Another post specifically labels it as the corner of Mount Dandenong Tourist Road and Monbulk Road, though I don't believe we have enough information to affirm this. This image recalls the workplace recreational events of the area in the early 20th century, and has direct relevance to the Nobelius Nursery.A black and white copy of a photograph of several horse-drawn carts on a road, filled with at least thirty people - men and women - dressed in the styles of the early 20th century. Emerald Country Club and Golf Course was originally part of the Nobelius Nursery complex. We have been unable to find a brand name or identify any identical items online or in other collections, indicating that this may be a custom-made tool designed specifically for use on a nursery - potentially C.A. Nobelius' nursery. It appears to be a foot-pedal operated hole punch, designed to reliably puncture metal pots for orchard trees. In the 1940s, the Nobelius nursery began to lift trees from the ground and sell them in pots rather than as bare-rooted plants; at this time, plastic was not yet widely available and many discarded biscuit or fruit tins were reused as pots. Potted trees required regular watering, and holes in the bottom of the pot for water to run out from; this hole punch may have facilitated an easier potting process until the popularisation of plastic pots in the 1960s.This item was a tool used in nursery practices in the 1940s, potentially including on the Nobelius nursery. Similar items are rare or difficult to find.This item rests on a cross base, with holes in each of the cross arms to allow it to be secured. The lower third of the central shaft is hollow, allowing for a foot pedal to descend through it. The middle third of the shaft is also hollow, with a loose central section affixed to the foot pedal moving up and down within it. In the upper third of the shaft, the hollow outer layer ends, and the mobile inner shaft is wrapped in a spring and affixed to the crossbar at the top of the item. Four small fixed crossbars also emerge from the sides of the middle third, attached to vertical rods through a rotating joint; the vertical rods attach with another rotating joint to pieces emerging through through the upper crossbar surface and ending with sharp points. The base and central shaft was painted yellow, and the upper crossbar head is painted red, though both are heavily faded. Together, these parts form a contraption that, when the foot pedal is pressed down, pulls the head downwards, in the process rotating the pointed pieces inwards to puncture the item placed on the head. It is difficult to say exactly when and where this photograph was taken. It was most likely around the year 1900, but could have originated from anywhere in the region. One site at which significant tree-clearing occurred at this time was the Nobelius nursery, where many native trees were removed in favour of trees producing fruit and other products of the nursery. It can't be confirmed that this picture was taken there, but it is certainly a possibility.Tree clearing was one of many important activities in early Emerald, both to collect timber for firewood and construction, and to open space for Nobelius' nursery and other agricultural and residential properties.A black and white image of two woodcutters manually sawing through a large tree. The belt was made c 1940s for military personnel and was used by Walter Baguley and donated by his son Robert (Bob) Baguley. Walter (Wally) Baguley 1920-1994 joined the military forces in 1940 under the title of Citizen Military Services Personnel. Earlier in his life, he worked for the Nobelius Nurseries where he became skilled at grafting. Later, he worked with the Postmaster General's Department.Item is in good condition. The Baguley family are long term residents of the Emerald District. Walter Baguley served with the Citizen Military Services Personnel during World War II and this belt may date from that time and may have been used by him.Khaki Green fabric belt. Notes associated with this photograph indicate both that it was taken at the end of Heroes Avenue and that it was taken on 'Monbulk Road' - while these notes might simply be incorrect, it may also indicate that this may have been taken at what is now the intersection of Heroes Avenue and either Beaconsfield-Emerald Road or Kilvington Drive, potentially at the time under a different or incorrect name. The subject of this portrait, Gus Ryberg (1911 - 2000), was a tireless promoter of local history and was pivotal in the establishment of the Nobelius Heritage Park and of the Emerald Museum. He was a prominent member of other community organisations including the Emerald Fire Brigade, the Emerald Arts Society and the Macclesfield Cemetery Trust. He received an Order of Australia medal for services to the local community in 1996. The artist, John Dudley, who donated this portrait to the Museum, was the President of the Emerald Arts Society.
