Headwear Pink Felt & Ribbon Fedora La Rene ...In the descriptions of two hats by La Rene in the Museum Victoria collection it is suggested that their origin may be French. La Rene was also a Sydney design house and it is believed that the fedora in the Kew collection is an Australian product. This hat and the MV examples have similar attributes. The Kew Historical Society’s fashion and design collection is comprised of costumes, hats, shoes and personal accessories. Many of these items were purchased or handmade in Victoria; some locally in Kew. The extensive hat collection comprises items dating from the 1860s to the 1970s. While most of the hats in the collection were created by milliners for women, there are a number of early and important men’s hats in the collection. The headwear collection is particularly significant in that it includes the work of notable Australian and international milliners.Deep pink coloured felt woman’s fedora by La Rene with a broad navy ribbon at the base of the crown. It was created on behalf of the Government of New South Wales. January 1st, 1901, is the official date of Australia's Federation. There is no recipient's name on the invitation. The illustrations on the invitation represent the Federation of Australian States, with their historic symbols carried on the sailing ship, representing the colonisation of Australia. The 'rising sun' possibly represents the rising of the young Australia. The Sough Australian symbol appears to be the historic seal of South Australia, depicting Britania meeting an Australian Aboriginal seated on the beach. The symbol was replaced in 1904. The Victorian symbol of a crown above the Southern Cross appears on the flag at the back of the ship, with a crown and the Southern Cross beside each other. The invitation was originally framed by G.U. Petterd, a picture framer and plush worker in Warrnambool, Victoria. The invitation holds great significance, representing a point in Australia's history when the British Colony became an independent nation, with the states uniting under a Federal government. The symbols on the invitation represent those used by each state at the time, many of which have evolved and changed since that time. The decorative and careful creation of the certificate represents the importance placed on the celebrations.Invitation; rectangular page printed in colour with text and illustrations, and attached to cardboard. The document has a floral border with a symbol in each corner. The illustration includes a wooden sailing ship with six figures with long fair hair wearing white robes, and holding six flags or symbols. The mast holds a swallow-tailed banner showing a flag and text. The invitation is from the Government of New South Wales, for the recipient to attend the inaugural celebrations in Sydney on 1st January 1901, for the official date of the Federation of Australia. There is a purple oval stamp on the revers with inscriptions. The picture was originally framed by G.U. Petterd, WarrnamboolSTAMP: "G.U. The Timor Street site is now the location of South West College of TAFE. The WarrnamboolTechnical School moved from Timor Street to its present-day site in Caramut Road Warrnambool in 1973 and was re-named Brauer College in 1990 after Alfred Brauer, a Warrnambool doctor and a prominent school patron. Emerald Museum & Nobelius Heritage ParkContainer - Free School Milk Bottle, Australian Glass Manufacturers, 1954
... Personally, I would rank the abolition of school milk as one of the crowning achievements of the Whitlam government."...Personally, I would rank the abolition of school milk as one of the crowning achievements of the Whitlam government." ...This bottle was manufactured in 1954 and donated alongside an accompanying note which implies it was a free school milk bottle given to a girl in Grade 2 in that year. In 2018 it was shown to the original recipient's grandchild, who wrote the accompanying note, before both were likely donated to us. The year of manufacture can be determined from the '4' by the Australian Glass Manufacturers maker's mark; the context indicates the bottle is from the 1950s, while the 4 indicates it is from a year ending with 4. The free school milk program for children up to 13 was established by the Federal Government in 1950 and implemented in Victoria by 1951. This was not the first free milk program - for example, Victoria had a winter-only program for a time - but was the first to standardise it across Australia. The program continued for two decades until a 1973 report assessed that the program was poor value for money, causing the Whitlam government to abolish it. In the words of Australian Food Timeline: "Recollections of the scheme vary. While some remember it fondly, most seem to have unpleasant memories of milk left to become warm and unappetising. Many claim it put them off milk forever. Personally, I would rank the abolition of school milk as one of the crowning achievements of the Whitlam government."The free milk program in many ways seems to be a remnant of a time where Australian nutrition policy aimed to counter hunger and maximise caloric intake rather than minimise it. This bottle and its accompanying note is an example of how much nutrition policy and educational standards has changed since the 1950s.This item was donated with a printed note which has been included in its record. This main item is a small glass milk bottle with a thread for a screw-on lid (not included). For a little over half its heigh, the walls of the bottle are vertical, before they curve inwards to make the top slightly narrower than the base. The letter was delivered to the Mayor of Warrnambool, Cr Webb. There were several other letters delivered at the same time but this is the important official one. Basil Watson was a pioneer aviator who built his own aeroplane which was 18 feet long with a wing span of 26 feet and it had a 7 cylinder 50 H.P. Rotary Gnome engine. Watson flew from Point Cook to Warrnambool in one hour 55 minutes, an Australian cross-country flying record at the time. In Warrnambool Watson amazed the crowd with his dare-devil aerial acrobatics, looping the loop 14 times over the Warrnambool Racecourse. Basil Watson died when he crashed his plane into the sea near Point Cook, just two months after he landed in Warrnambool. This letter is of the utmost significance being the first air mail letter delivered to Warrnambool. It is an important memento of the first aeroplane flight into Warrnambool by the pioneer aviator Basil Watson. This is a cream-coloured sheet of paper folded in two to make four pages. It has handwriting in black ink on two pages. The writing is a little faded. The first page has the logo of the Melbourne Town Hall. The pages are partly torn at the folds. ‘Town Hall, Melbourne, 21/1/17.
