Owen RYE (05.11.1944 - ) Born Cooma, New South Wales Internationally recognised in the field of Ceramics, Owen Rye was a lecturer at the School of Visual Arts, Gippsland Institute of Advanced Education (incorporated into Monash University 1992), 1985-91 and senior Lecturer at the Gippsland Centre for Art and Design, Monash University (later Federation University) from 1992-2003. Proficient in the use of the wood-fired Anagama kilm, the surface of his work is dependant upon the placement of the item in the kiln, with ash glaze developing where ash and embers coat the form. This motorcycle club overlay belonged to former Roo BC [Roo Bike Club] President Owen Huckel, and dates from the mid 1970s. Prior to joining Roo BC, Huckel was a member and President of Australia's first gay motorcycle club, South Pacific Motor Club or SPMC, established in 1970. Among the Papers of Noel Lewington held by the Australian Queer Archives are two large photograph albums compiled by Huckel documenting his involvement in SPMC and Roo BC, including one which documents a trip to the USA in 1972-1973, comprising 366 photographs, maps, and ephemera documenting club runs with many west coast clubs. On 8th August 2002, 19 large banners each 18 metres long, each made from hundreds of square pieces of fabric with images and messages, were attached to the side of McKillops Bridge at Deddick, Victoria. This bridge spans the Snowy River and is a significant crossing point in an isolated location. This ceremony was the culmination of a large multi-community project titled 'Banners of Hope', initiated as a focus on the 'year of the outback'. Many people, community groups, and schools contributed to this project, each coming from different locations associated with East Gippsland and with the Snowy River in particular. This video compilation is significant because it is a record of a significant community project called 'Banners of Hope' staged at McKillops Bridge during the Year of the Outback, 2002.A video inside a plastic case. This book has been compiled by the East Gippsland Community Leadership Program 2021 on behalf of East Gippsland Communities. It contains many individual stories of personal experiences from people and workers who lived through the huge conflagrations during late 2019 and early 2020. These fires were enormous, with huge impact for much of Victoria and nearly all of East Gippsland. Survival, recovery and hope are amongst the many themes. It is a book with many authors who contributed their stories and recollections. As part of the Crelebration of the Year of the Outback, McKillop's Bridge in the Deddick Valley was hung with nineteen banners made by individuals and groups of East Gippsland. Banners containing thousands of messages of hope and optimism for the future of rural communities were suspended from he bridge in the Snowy River National Park, in front of a three hundred strong crowd that had assembled. Sister Helen Barnes from the Sisters of St Joseph Order, founded by Mary McKillop, initiated the project. Kew achieved independence from the Boroondara Roads Board in 1860. As a new municipality, its first three leaders were designated as chairmen. On becoming a borough in 1863, its leaders were identified as mayors. The earliest photographs date from ca.1906, when the Town of Kew commissioned the noted local photographer Josiah E Barnes to produce standardised portraits of former mayors to be displayed in the Mayoral Chamber of the Town Hall. The collection also includes photographs by other well-known photographic studios such as Burlington Studios, Melba – Melbourne, Stuart Tompkins, Spencer Shier and Talma & Co. The majority of mounts identify the photographer. Eighty photographs are housed in their original frames.This portrait is one of a series of mounted and framed photographic portraits of Mayors and Town Clerks of the former Borough, Town and City of Kew, for the period 1863 to 1969. The portraits were transferred by the City of Kew to the Kew Historical Society in March 1989. A Significance Assessment in 2018, funded by the National Library of Australia confirmed the historic, and often artistic significance of the series. Framed portrait of Cr. W. E. R. Hope, Mayor of Kew in 1952-3 and 1967-8. The mounting and framing of the photograph follows a typical layout or style in that each is framed in dark wood, glazed, and laid down on an inscribed board. Greenwich Palace no longer exists however archaeology had added greatly to our understanding of life at the Tudor Court at Greenwich. Since 1971 there have been well over 20 digs on the site. Many wonderful and intriguing items from gold coins to tiled floors and human skeletons have been found. The first major dig uncovered the structure of the royal apartments next to the river. Not only did it clarify the floor plan but finds included some rare Tudor ceiling decorations, a hoard of gold coins and many personal items such as dice used for gaming. Perhaps the most revealing excavations have been the most recent. This window, in memory of Alice Sibthorpe Tracy, was unveiled on 31 October 1933 by the Right Reverend R. Stephen D.D. along with the brass tablet in the Williamstown building, and a sectile tablet in the Port Melbourne building. (AR 1933). "A scheme has been set in operation to raise funds so that a memorial may be erected to Miss A. Sibthorpe Tracy, who has done so much for the Victoria Missions to Seamen. It has been decided that a companion window to that of "The Light of the World" will be placed in St. Peter's Chapel, the design being that of a figure of Hope with her hand on a ship's anchor.
