The wooden pedestrian bridge spanned the rail tracks at Sunbury Railway Station and were replaced with a more modern bridge and ramp when upgrades were done at the station and along the Bendigo line in the late 1990s and early 2000s. The water tank beyond the station building was used to refill the engines with water when steam engines were used. Diesel driven V Line trains now convey commuters from the regional towns along the Bendigo region to Melbourne. The Bendigo Line was the first government rail line to open and it reached Sunbury in 1859. Lower Plenty Heritage Excursion included the former monastery of the Blessed Sacrament Fathers, now Odyssey House, and its suspension footbridge across the Yarra River. Odyssey House drug rehabilitation centre in Bonds Road, Lower Plenty is a distinctive landmark, especially when viewed from across the Yarra at Templestowe. It was built in the 1950’s as a seminary for the Blessed Sacrament Fathers. Because of the poor and circuitous road access, a suspension footbridge was built across the river. As well as providing easy access for the priests residents of Templestowe could attend services at the seminary. The following was reported in the Herald newspaper on 17th April 1919. A stock train travelling north crashed head-on with a goods train coming in the opposite direction. The driver thought he had been given the all-clear to proceed into Sunbury and it was only when the train was approaching the Macedon Street bridge that he saw the red light and it was too late. The accident caused damage to rolling stock and disruption on the Bendigo and Maryborough lines. The train coming from Bendigo smashed onto the platform at Sunbury. The driver of the stock train was thrown under the van and suffered a broken arm and facial injuries. The fireman was thrown clear of the tracks. A local Sunbury doctor treated them before they were taken by a casualty train to hospital. A crew from Melbourne came to Sunbury to repair the damage. The track was cleared by that afternoon. This was one of a number of train crashes that have occurred in the Sunbury line over the years.A non-digital black and white photograph of a train crash at a station.
