The two embroidered pillow shams were made by Betty Stones's mother Daisy (nee Dale) Welsh. A number of crocheted and embroidered articles were donated to Flagstaff Hill Museum by Betty Stone who advised that they cover a period of three generations from Sarah (nee Chamberlain) Lees, Ann (nee Lees) Dale, and Daisy Elvena (nee Dale) Welsh. All three were accomplished needlewomen, both Sarah Lees (born 1844) and her daughter, Ann (1865) these women crocheted a wide variety of articles for use in their homes. Today we have a few surviving examples of their skill that has survived the years.This item and others in the collection donated by Betty Stone are significant for their association with the early Warrnambool pioneering families of Chamberlain, Dale and Lees. These families are listed in the "Pioneers' Register" for Warrnambool Township and Shire, 1835-1900, and published by A.I.G.S. Warrnambool Branch. The pram is light in weight. Made of black vinyl with a metal frame. A handle with wooden grips is used to push the pram from behind. It has four spoked wheels with rubber tyres. The hood can be unlocked and folded down as can the handle which folds over the top of the pram body for ease of transport. The pram contains a soft kapok fitted mattress with white heirloom lace frilled cover and a soft pillow covered with a white cotton pillowcase with a chicken and flowers embroidered on it.None

These beds were adapted by early settlers who used recycled timber and rudimentary tools to build practical, multi-functional furniture for cramped, early settler living quarters. By day, it served as bench seating in the kitchen or as a bed for toddlers, young children or whoever wanted to rest.In the Slab Kitchen there is a dark stained wooden early settler's single sized day bed with four thick turned legs, four turned rods at one end as a bedhead and a heavy wire rod to strengthen the frame is attached near the bedhead. It has a hessian base to support the fitted blue cotton covered mattress. For the bedding there is a floral coloured cotton throw as well as a small bugundy, green and navy coloured corduroy patchwork quilt at the foot of the bed. There are two small colourful printed cushions and a burgundy maroon corduroy bolster to decorate the bedding. It has a pillow covered with a white pillowcase showing a blue flour advertisement. Article in the Camperdown Chronicle (Vic. : 1877 - 1954), Saturday 7 June 1902, page 3 "PERSONAL. "Punch" has the following with reference to the death of the late Mr. Charles Shuter:—The cable message which was received last Monday an-nouncing the death on last Saturday of Mr. Charles Shuter of Wykenham Lodge, Toorak, will occasion much regret. When Mr. Shuter arrived in Victoria about forty-seven years ago he was soon appointed a goldfields commissioner and used to relate that the office was full of responsibility, he had frequently for his only pillow nuggets covered with cloth for safety. After some years he was appointed police magistrate, while still quite young, and held this office till he was pensioned some years ago. Then, when the Old Age Pensions came into force, he was recalled from retirement and put on the commission. A few years ago the heart ailment from which he had long suffered began to grow more severe, and he left with his wife and youngest daughter to travel in Europe. Recent letters showed that he was steadily growing worse at Nice, where he was living quietly, and he succumbed on 31st May. His widow, who was a Miss Lord, survives him, and nine of their eleven children. The eldest son, a doctor, died many years ago. Then came Mr. Frank Shuter, a grazier near Albury ; Mrs. Murray Puckle, of Toorak ; Mr. Clement Shuter, solicitor, and Dr. Ernest Shuter, both settled near Camperdown; Mr. Edward Shuter, surveyor; the late Mrs. L. This photograph depicts one of the forms of nursing care given by Melbourne District Nursing Service (MDNS), Sisters in the home of a patient. In this photograph, the Sister is visiting the home of a lady who is confined to a Negative Pressured Ventilator, also known as an 'Iron Lung', which assists her to breathe. The Sister gave both physical and emotional care to the patient, as well as support and advice to those who were caring for her.The Trained nurses of the Melbourne District Nursing Society (MDNS), later known as Royal District Nursing Service (RDNS), visited patients in their home and gave best practice care in many fields of nursing, and to people of many cultures, throughout its 130 years of expansion. Initial visits not only assessed the specific nursing situation but the situation as a whole. Their patients ranged in age from babes, children, adults to the elderly and referrals were taken from Hospitals, General Practitioners and allied Health facilities. Some of the care the Sisters provided is as follows: – Post-Natal care given to mother and babe, Wound Care following various types of surgery, accidents, burns, cancer, leg ulcers etc. Supervising and teaching Diabetic Care, including teaching and supervising people with Diabetes to administer their own Insulin, and administering Insulin to those unable to give their own injections. Administering other injections and setting up weekly medication boxes. The Sisters performed Catheterizations on adults suffering from conditions such as Quadriplegia, Paraplegia, Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Motor Neurone Disease (MND) and Guillan-Barre Syndrome, and when required at school on children for e.g. those with Spina Bifida. The Sisters visited those requiring Cystic Fibrosis support and care; those requiring Haemo-Oncology care, including visiting children at school; those requiring Home Enteral Feeding care, and those requiring IV therapy at home and home Dialysis. Palliative Care was given including pain relief with the use of syringe drivers, personal care as needed, and advice and support to both patient and family. The Sisters provided Stoma management to those needing Urostomy, Ileostomy and Colostomy care and those requiring Continence care. HIV/AIDS nursing care was provided; visits to Homeless Persons were made. Personal care was given to patients ranging in age and with varying mobility problems, such as those with MS, MND, Guillan-Barre Syndrome, Poliomyelistis, Quadriplegia, Paraplegia, Acquired Brain Injury, to those following a Cerebrovascular Accident (Stroke), those with severe Arthritis and those with a form of Dementia. When necessary the elderly were assisted with personal care and advice given on safety factors with the use of hand rails, bath or shower seats, and hand showers. Rehabilitation with an aim towards independence remained at the forefront of the Sister’s minds and when possible using aids and instruction on safe techniques enabled the person to become fully independent. The Giles family lived at The Maam, Wangoom in the late 19th century, before moving to New South Wales in 1895, where Henry built bridges. Henry died in 1933 and Mary Jane died seven years later. Flagstaff Hill holds a number of objects associated with the Giles family, which were donated by Flagstaff Hill volunteers Vera and Aurelin Giles (Henry and Mary Jane’s daughter and granddaughter respectively). This bolster sham is one of several linen and clothing items that were made and belonged to Mrs. Eliza Towns and donated to Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum and Village. Eliza was born Eliza Gould in 1857 in South Melbourne (Emerald Hill) and in 1879 married Charles Towns. In the early 1880's they moved to Nhill in western Victoria and remained there for the rest of their married life. Charles was a jeweller and later became an accountant and for many years was involved with the Shire Council, the local show committee (A & P Society), the Hospital Committee and the Board of the local newspaper (the Nhill Free Press). They had three children and lived a life that would be regarded as comfortably "middle class". Eliza probably had a treadle sewing machine and would have made many of her own clothes and household linens - adding her own handmade embroidered or crocheted decorative trim. Most beds during the late 19th and early 20th century had a feather, hair or spring mattress covered by a blanket and topped with an under sheet, an upper sheet, several blankets and a bedspread. A flat bolster could be placed either under the pillows or on top of the pillows with a decorative sham. Washing pillows and quilts by hand would have been a very onerous task (involving heating water and handwashing in a tub or using a copper) and so it became the practise of many housewives to cover the pillows and bolsters with an outer slip (or sham) of washable material which could be easily removed and washed when needed. If the bolster was kept under the pillows it wouldn't need to be very decorative but many shams or slips that were "on show" were often highly decorated with embroidery, pintucks, ribbons or lace. This bolster sham is machine made and quite plain with the exception of some pintucking and eyelet lace on each end which suggests that it would mostly be hidden under the top pillows with just the decorative edges on display.This item is an example of the needlework skills of women in the early 20th century - combining machine stitching with hand embroidery to personalise and embellish a practical domestic object. It is also significant as an example of an early 20th century innovation that helped make the working lives of housewives a little bit easier.A long white cotton rectangular bolster sham, machine sewn, with seven ties and two buttons (plus one missing button) to enable it to be folded over lengthwise and closed. Gladys Reed was a member of the Ormond Choral Society c 1950. who performed plays and musicals the City of Moorabbin and she used these patterns to make clothes etc.for her family and the Choral Society. Madame Weigel who migrated to Melbourne in1877 with her husband Oscar; began publishing in 1878 and distributed paper patterns of the latest fashions, throughout Australia and New Zealand, She and Oscar became the first commercial manufacturers of paper patterns in Australasia, and to publish Weigel's Journal of Fashion (1880-1915) and Madame Weigel's Journal of Fashion (1915-1950). Madame Weigel had an enormous following of women who used her patterns across the generations, and across the life cycle from babies to 'matrons'. Madame Weigel died in 1940 aged 92 years. A 19 cm wide panel of fabric has been sewn to the top of the cover and is edged on three sides with finely embroidered broderie anglaise featuring a circular, six petalled flower impression. A panel of the same broderie runs through the centre of the panel and is bordered by a band of three pin-tucks on each side. Textiles. Fine linen fabric, white in colour. The top of the cover is finished with an 8 cm deep band of cotton crochet, featuring a diamond shaped pattern - each diamond 5.5 cm deep. Textiles. Very large cover, with an envelope to enclose the pillow, stitched on the underside, with cotton tape ties to enclose the pillow. Beautiful fine cotton broderie fabric (possibly Swiss cotton broderie anglaise) edges the pillow. Corners of the embroidered cotton have been mitred in an unusual way, with the excess fabric still evident, in a 'kite-shaped' manner, in each corner. The embroidered cotton edging features a scalloped edge, with circular, and floral design. Sarah Contos is a multidisciplinary artist working across various modes of collage, sculpture and installation. Contos explores identity, eroticism, femininity, materiality, popular culture and history. She describes her life in relation to contradictions, saying: “I make quilts for art but never for warmth. I watch cooking shows but never cook. I want to cover my home in florals, but it ends up in wine stains.” Total Control is a quilted textile work notable for its screen-printed surface of imagery sourced from 1970s editions of the provocative Australasian Post magazine. Contos’ use of dangling fabric tubes, coils and pillows, and fabric patches draw allusions to the body; these elements are both familiar and confronting.

Sara Lindsay is a Melbourne-based artist, curator and educator. She worked as a weaver at the Victorian Tapestry Workshop (now the Australian Tapestry Workshop) from its foundation in 1976 until 1990. Alongside her art practice, Lindsay has lectured at the Tasmanian School of Art, held the role of Curator of Textiles at the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, then the position of Production Manager at the Australian Tapestry Workshop. Since 2013 she has mentored three Karen refugee women from Myanmar, assisting in their professional development and furthering their tapestry skills. In 2023 Lindsay began the Ararat New Settlement Weaving Program, teaching and mentoring culturally diverse settlers from refugee and migrant backgrounds in the Ararat region. The artwork exhibited here is part of body of work exploring Lindsay’s family’s historical ties to Sri Lanka. Her British grandfather managed a tea plantation in Ceylon’s hill country during the 1920s and 30s, where her mother was born before returning to England after his early death in 1937. After her first visit to Sri Lanka in 2005, Lindsay developed works that responded to this journey. She chose a quiet, contemplative approach to reflect on the complexity of colonial histories. Research into her family history led her to delve deeper into Sri Lanka’s complex history as a trading nation and to expand her materials to speak to this layered past. The use of cinnamon in this work connects to the story of 17th-century weavers from Southern India who were displaced from the Kingdom of Kandy and sent to the southwest coast to become cinnamon peelers under Portuguese and later Dutch rule. The finely woven ticking strips seen here reference the thick cotton fabric once used to cover mattresses and pillows aboard cargo ships transporting spices from Sri Lanka - a subtle reminder of the human stories woven into trade routes and colonial histories.

Sara Lindsay is a Melbourne-based artist, curator and educator. She worked as a weaver at the Victorian Tapestry Workshop (now the Australian Tapestry Workshop) from its foundation in 1976 until 1990. Alongside her art practice, Lindsay has lectured at the Tasmanian School of Art, held the role of Curator of Textiles at the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, then the position of Production Manager at the Australian Tapestry Workshop. Since 2013 she has mentored three Karen refugee women from Myanmar, assisting in their professional development and furthering their tapestry skills. In 2023 Lindsay began the Ararat New Settlement Weaving Program, teaching and mentoring culturally diverse settlers from refugee and migrant backgrounds in the Ararat region. The artwork exhibited here is part of body of work exploring Lindsay’s family’s historical ties to Sri Lanka. Her British grandfather managed a tea plantation in Ceylon’s hill country during the 1920s and 30s, where her mother was born before returning to England after his early death in 1937. After her first visit to Sri Lanka in 2005, Lindsay developed works that responded to this journey. She chose a quiet, contemplative approach to reflect on the complexity of colonial histories. Research into her family history led her to delve deeper into Sri Lanka’s complex history as a trading nation and to expand her materials to speak to this layered past. The use of cinnamon in this work connects to the story of 17th-century weavers from Southern India who were displaced from the Kingdom of Kandy and sent to the southwest coast to become cinnamon peelers under Portuguese and later Dutch rule. The finely woven ticking strips seen here reference the thick cotton fabric once used to cover mattresses and pillows aboard cargo ships transporting spices from Sri Lanka - a subtle reminder of the human stories woven into trade routes and colonial histories.
