Importance of religion in the Yendon community is evidenced by the two churches. This is the weatherboard building of the catholic church and there was also a brick Anglican Church. Both these buildings were eventually removed when congregations declined as the community declined in the twentieth century.The catholic church was looking a bit delapidated in this photo taken just before it was demolished. Next to it can be seen the former Bennett garage building. Bennett shop and garage (petrol station) 1920s-1940s. Later (1970s-1981) run as op-shop by Mrs. Surman to raise money for Maxwell Park C.E.B.S. camp. Originally Joseph Shepherd's "Family Grocer & Ironmonger" store, run for a short time after Joseph Shepherd's death by his nephew Alf Darling. Part of the shop became Gordon Bennett butchery in 1930s, and was used as a butcher's shop until the 1980s. Last butcher was Frank Verdoorn. Built early 1860 as a bakery by Mr Winstanley. James Nicol bought the bakery late 1860s - operated as a bakery until 1972, Ray Wilson being the last baker. Max Standish purchased the building and opened an antique shop 1973-1983. Currently in private ownership. This home was built for the Bennett family in about 1928. It replaced the butcher's shop in Sussex which was run by George Garnsworthy Bennett from 1896. The small town in the photograph is the former Broadmeadows Township (now part of Westmeadows). It was situated on the Old Sydney Road (Mickleham Road) and 2 miles east of the Broadmeadows Station. The stone bridge in the foreground spans the Moonee Ponds Creek and Fawkner Street is the road, which leads southwards to Gladstone Park and Tullamarine.
