Station Port of Echuca Wharf Prince Charles and Lady Diana ...PS Pevensey was the last vessel to be built on the Moama slipway in 1910. it was originally built as the barge Mascotte a year earlier. It is powered by a 20hp Marshall and Sons steam engine and was first used on the Murrumbidgee River where it collected wool bales and brought them back to Echuca where they were loaded onto trains and taken to Melbourne for shipping overseas. The PS Pevensey was named after the Pevensey Station on the Murrumbidgee River. In the 1950's it travelled to South Australia where it survived being burnt and sunk but continued to keep working in the agricultural industry. It was sold to the Port of Echuca in 1973 where it was restored over 3 years and is still the largest vessel operating from the Echuca Wharf. In 1982, it was temporarily renamed The Philadelphia, and starred in the TV mini series " All The River's Run" based on the books by Nancy Cato. In 1985 Prince Charles and Lady Diana visited Echuca and cruised on the PS Pevensey, although it was labelled PS Philadelphia for the occasion. It is the largest vessel operating from the Echuca wharf as it can carry 90 passengers or 120 tons of cargo. PS Pevensey is a Murray River paddle steamer from 1910 and was built at Moama in NSW opposite the Port of Echuca. It was one of the largest towing and cargo paddle steamers on the river and was known as "the great Clydesdale" of the river. PS Pevensey remained operating on the river until 1958 after a number of years lying dormant it was purchased in 1973 and restored at Echuca. It began operating again in 1976 and it is still taking trips. it is one of a small number that still operates in its cargo carrying layout and with its original reconditioned engine. Coming back to Echuca PS Pevensey brought Kevin Hutchinson OAM to work at the Port of Echuca for the rest of his life.A side wheeled paddle steamer. ... industry port of echuca echuca wharf permewan wright co. Verso ...The barge 'Ada' was built in Echuca in 1899. It was 33 metres in length and 6.9 metres wide and was made from timber and iron. It's design was unique as it was half-timber, and half-iron- the iron featured above the water line to prevent the wool bales from getting wet. The 'Ada' was used to carry wool from sheep stations on the Murray and Murrumbidgee Rivers down to Echuca Wharf for distribution around the world. The Permewan Wright, Murray Shipping Company, owned the 'Ada' and in the1930s the barge was sold to the Evans family who used it to transport timber to it's Echuca sawmill. The 'Ada' was purchased by the Port of Echuca in 1974 and is seen here on the Moama slipway undergoing restoration for Port of Echuca in 1979 to 1980. The remains of the 'Ada' still lie on the banks of the Moama slipway but it has fallen into near complete disrepair.The barge 'Ada' is very significant due to the uniqueness of her design. The hull is timber, up to the water line, then iron from the water line up to protect the bales of wool bales that it transports from water damage. The P.S Pevensey, within the Port of Echuca collection, has the same design feature.The barge 'Ada' in dry dock, on a slipway with a 4 knot marine sign is next to it. The barge is surrounded by trees and has since fallen into disrepair. It was owned by J.G.Grassie from Poon Boon Station and the Officer Family of Murray Downs Station Swan Hill. The Adelaide was named after the niece of the Officer Bros, Adelaide Blackwood. The shipwright who built her was George Linklater. The Adelaide brought wool and passengers from the wool stations on the Murray and Darling Rivers down to the Echuca Wharf. In 1872 she was sold to David Blair & Sons. She was used to bring timber from the Barmah Forest to the Echuca Wharf. She did this work for the next 80 years. In 1953 she was tied up near the Mill and left. In 1958 she went to Paringa South Australia to work in the sawmill industry again. In 1960 the Echuca Apex Club and The Echuca Historical Society raised enough funds to buy the P.S. Adelaide and return her to Echuca. In November 1963 she was lifted out of the water and placed in Hopwood Gardens as this was thought to be a way of preserving her. In 1984 it was decided to return her to the water to resume work as a passenger vessel. In that time the Port of Echuca and the Echuca Wharf had been restored as a Tourist Precinct. This photograph shows the beginning of the task to return her to the river. It took several weeks in March 1984.The P.S Adelaide is extremely significant as it it the oldest known wooden hulled paddle steamers in the world. She was built in Echuca in 1866 and still operates on the Murray River today. She has worked in the Wool Industry, the Timber Industry and the Tourist Industry.This is a coloured square photograph of an orange front end loader clearing a track from Hopwood Gardens down to the river. This is a photograph of an engraving showing the first train arriving at the Echuca Wharf on 25/09/1865. The photograph appeared in the Illustrated Australian News on 25/09/1865. It also appeared in Susan Preiestly's book, 'Echuca; A centenary history' in 1965 on page 46.. The picture is of interest because it shows the size of the wharf in 1865. It also shows all the crowds to welcome the first train. It also shows the buildings along Murray Esplanade. In the far left the Steam Packet Hotel, Shackell's Bond Store and the St George's Hall, next the The Bridge Hotel. Five large steam ships are visible, all carrying crowds of people. In the foreground is the S.S Melbourne. Two rowing boats are in the left foreground.This engraving is significant because it shows the welcoming of the first train onto the wharf. The photograph shows the size of the wharf in 1865, as well as the street scape and the vessels on the water at the wharf. There is also some activity at Evan's sawmill. There are crowds on the wharf, and lining Murray Esplanade. It also shows that most of the crowd are males, which helped describe the role that women played in public life in the 1880's. This photograph shows the wharf in the 1980's. It is the early days of tourism, and shows Helen Coulson, dressed in period costume guiding the tourists. The sign shows distances from Echuca to significant sites on the Murray River in miles, as that was the way distance was calculated in the 1870's. The sign is no longer there.This photograph shows Helen Coulson as a tour guide. Helen was the first Manager of the Port of Echuca from the mid 1970's. The tourism industry was still in it's infancy and Helen was a strong supporter of the Port. This photograph shows Helen Coulson, the first Manager of the Port of Echuca, dressed in period costume, conducting a guided tour for a group of tourists, in the early 1980's. In the background another tour group is being guided through the Echuca Wharf Railway station. Shackell's Bond Store can be seen in the background. Echuca Hotel in High Street can also be seen in the distance. In the foreground there is a pile of sand bags.These photographs are significant because it shows Helen Coulson as a tour guide. It also shows that High Street could be seen from the wharf in the 1980's. These photographs and negative show the P. S. Adelaide travelling from Paddlewheel Park up to the Echcua wharf, immediately after being re-launched into the Murray River on 03/04/1984. The P.S.Adelaide had been displayed in the Hopwood Gardens, as a static display since 1960. The P.S Adelaide is the second oldest wooden hulled paddle steamer, still operative, in the world. The P.S Pevensey is leading the way up to the wharf, and an unknown smaller paddle steamer follows behind. This photograph is significant because it shows the P.S Adelaide back in the Murray River after 24 years as a static display in the Hopwood Gardens. The P.S Adelaide is the second oldest wooden hulled paddle steamer, still operative in the world. In July 2016 it celebrated its 150th birthday. The P.S Adelaide had been displayed in the Hopwood Gardens since 1960, and the City of Echuca Mande a decision to launch the paddle steamer back into the river to be used as a working tourist attraction. This photograph relates to P000059.3, P000060.3, P000061.3, P000062.2, P000063.3, P000071.This photograph is significant as it shows the state of the Echuca Wharf in 1984. It also shows the state of the P.S Adealide after sitting idle for so many years. The photograph shows the state of the Echuca wharf in 1973 or 1974. The P.S Pevensey looks like it has just received a fresh coat of paint. There is also a train parked on the wharf behind the school students. The river also appears to be quite high. This photograph shows the state of the wharf in the early 1970's. It shows the fence between the wharf and Murray Esplande was relatively new. The tourism industry was very new to Echuca in the 1970's but the P.S Pevensey looks ready to take Tourists cruising on the Murray River. It also shows schools were using the port as a valuable resource for teaching History.A black and white photograph of the P.S Pevensey tied up to the Echuca Wharf. There is a group of school children leaning over the wire fence at the edge of the wharf. There is also one teacher supervising the children. The Steam Packet Inn and the Customs House can be seen in the background.Pevensey; Melbourne can be seen clearly written on the paddle steamer. This photograph shows a punt (with a dingy tied to it ) moored to the wharf structure on the Murray river at Echuca. Punts were used to transport people and goods from one side of the river to the other.Punts were used to cross the Murray river at many spots before bridges were built. The mill later became a tourist attraction, Red Gum Works, continuing to cut timber until it was taken over by The Port of Echuca as a display (Port of Echuca booklet, 2005 ed., p. 32)Sawmilling was a very important industry for Echuca. At its peak in Echuca in about 1877 there were between 1000-1500 men employed in the industry (Priestley, Susan. 1965, p.118). Red gum was sourced from the forests along the Murray river. It is a very strong timber suitable for bridge & wharf building, construction works as well as housing and especially for sleepers for the railways. The Star Hotel was built in 1863 as a private dwelling, by James Shackell who owned the Bond Store, next door. It was a small house consisting of only a couple of rooms. In 1867 Joseph Salomon bought the house and converted it into a hotel. He built an underground bar to "deal with the peculiarities of the Echuca climate". It was called 'The Shades'. In 1890 Jane Pygall bought the hotel, which was described by the Riverine Herald as having ' three parlours, seven bedrooms, underground bar, kitchen, bathroom, outhouses, small stables, and entrance from two streets." She changed the name to The Esplanade Hotel. In 1890 it was de-licensed along with many hotels in Echuca. It had been a very popular drinking place for all the wharf workers, who continued to to drink illegally in the underground bar. It was then that the escape tunnel to the laneway was built , so the drinkers could escape the Police raids. For many years it was a private dwelling, or an office. In 1973 the City of Echuca bought the Star Hotel and resored it. At the time this photograph was taken it was the main tourist information centre for the Port of Echuca. It now operates as a hotel, serving meals and providing performance opportunities for musicians.The Star Hotel is very significant in Echuca's history due to its proximity to the Echuca Wharf. It was the closest bar to the wharf. Despite Jane Pygall trying to improve the quality of her clientele, the wharf drinkers preferred to drink at The Star Hotel, as the Bridge Hotel catered for more upmarket clientele. After de-licensing in 1897, the workers continued to drink at The Shades Bar and even put in place elaborate strategies to enable them to drink illegally there. It is now a large eating and entertainment site, and the public are still able to visit 'The Shades Bar'.A coloured photograph of the Star Hotel building in Murray Esplanade. This photograph was taken in February 1984 on the occasion of Cossen's visit to Echuca. It is a close up of the wheelhouse of the P.S Pevensey with the name Philadelphia written across the wheelhouse. This is significant because the P.S Pevensey played the role of the P. S Philadelphia in the movie "All The Rivers Run" which was filmed in Echuca in late 1982 and a sequel was filmed in Echuca early in 1989.This photograph is significant because it shows the P.S. Pevensey showing the name P.S Philadelphia. The P.S Pevensey was used as the P.S Philadelphia in the TV Series "All The Rivers Run" based on the novel written by Nancy Cato. The TV series was a huge success and still draws tourists to the Port of Echuca. The fact that the P.S Pevensey was showing the Philadelphia name in 1984 is a bit of a mystery, but it has been known that she was dressed up again as the P.S Philadelphia sometimes for special occasions. The Cossen's visit to Echuca might have been such an occasion. It also shows the Echuca Wharf with a train parked there, and the Customs House can be seen in the background as well.A close-up image of the P.S. Geoff Evans was the third generation to run Evans Brothers Sawmills that operated from the northern end of the Echuca Wharf from 1923 to 1983. His grandfather Richard James Evans orig. of England, settled in Victoria at a young age. He first worked as a butcher and later cut firewood in the Heathcote and Bacchus Marsh area. ‘R.J.’, as he was known established a sawmill at Barmah in the 1890s, before relocating to this site in 1923. It became known officially as the Evans Bros. Echuca Red Gum Sawmill. This site proved more economical due to its position at the railhead. Paddlesteamers towed barges carrying the logs from the surrounding forests to this mill. The Steamers that were owned by the Evans family were the Edwards (built 1875) and the Melbourne (built 1912). The Edwards was the main towing vessel. Outrigger barges at this mill were the Impulse (1885), Alison (1907), Clyde (once a paddlesteamer, built in 1884). Insider barges at the mill were old wool barges with iron topsides, the J.L.Roberts (1894), ADA (1899) and the Whaler which was of wooden construction. The Evans Mill cut both red gum and Murray pine. There was a main mill for the red gum and a second one for the pine on this site. Two new Marshall steam engines had been purchased by the family, one was used in the P.S. Edwards and the other for the Barmah mill and later this site. The Evans Bros. Mill was very much a family concern with it being owned and operated firstly by R.J., then his son Frederick. R. Evans and later grandson Geoff Evans. The mill employed 18 workers and operated until the 1980s, only briefly was it in the hands of other owners before the construction on part of the site of a tourist-oriented building known as the Red Gum Works which eventually made way for the Port of Echuca Discovery Centre in 2014.Knowledge of the redgum timber milling industry and associated mechanisms such as log slips is scant with little photographic representations to be found. The industry created alongside the Murray River in various places was very unique given the nature of red gum not floating and ingenuity and making use of local resources was required. Geoff Evans had firsthand knowledge of much of this process and how the Echuca Wharf area used to be in past decades.
