This set of pots represents the type of pot or saucepan used on an open range wood fired stove. Bruce STEWART A Diploma Student in Ceramics at the Gippsland Institute of Advanced Education from 1977 to 1979. Jan Feder is an alumna of Federation University having studied ceramics at the Gippsland Institute of Advanced Education (now Federation University Gippsland campus). Jan Feder was respected by all students for her diligence and technical ability. Her tragic death in 1981 evoked an immediate response from her peers for a memorial. Students discussed a number of memorial options, such as funds for equipment, scholarships and awards. The decision to commence a collection was made based on the idea that all future students could benefit from the availability of a collection, whereas only a very few individuals could benefit from a scholarship. Students immediately set about raising money by selling 'seconds' called 'Junque Sales'. A total of $760.00 was raised and the first two works purchased were by Victor Greenaway and Victoria Howlett. Ceramic works were purchased from visiting lecturers who became leading ceramic artists around the world, as well as from many of the staff who taught at the Gippsland Campus. The Artist in Residence Program assisted the collection, with many resident artists contributing to the Collection (ie Robin Welch, Anna Zamorska, Sandy Brown), as well as international guests. Ceramic events such as 'Strzelecki Spotkanie 1984' and 'Woodfire 86' also resulted on major contributions to the collection. Salt-glazed pots. They are part of a vintage three piece condiment set which has a Guernsey coat of arms insignia badge attached to the mustard pot not pictured here. See entry 3531. The salt and pepper shakers and mustard pot were used in the 1900's. It was originally owned by Edward Lloyd Mauger.A pair of vintage small chrome plated salt and pepper shakers with a basket weave outer container and a cobalt blue glass insert to hold either the salt or pepper. They have domed screw top lids and a hole in each silver base. T. & C. Clark & Company Limited was based at Shakespeare Foundry in Wolverhampton England and was founded in 1795 by Thomas and Charles Clark. The company grew to be one of the largest iron foundries in Wolverhampton and were pioneering in the manufacture of enamelled cast iron cookware and sanitary wares. The company's product range included thousands of items, both domestic and industrial. T. & C. Clark were pioneers in the use of enamelled cast ironware, after taking out a patent in 1839 guaranteeing their products to be free of lead or arsenic. The company became the largest employer in Wolverhampton employing between 600 to 700 people.The items are significant as they were used as domestic kitchen items to cook food safely without the concern that the metal may contain lead or arsenic as earlier cooking utensils had. This is due to the enamel lining pioneered by TC Clark Pot set; set of three pots. Iron pots, enamelled on the inside with a pouring lip and capacity label on each pot. This chamber pot came from the local Parker family. We take indoor flushing toilets pretty much for granted, but in the 18th century the chamber pot was the solution to answering a call of nature for most poorer households. Wealthier people also had chamber pots made from either earthenware or pewter. Prosperous travellers took their pot with them on journeys - public toilets did not exist. Some pots had lids. Bridgwood & Son were established in Lane End around 1795. Sampson Bridgwood took over the Anchor Pottery at the corner of Wharf Street (renamed Bridgwood Street in the 1950s) and Goddard Street in Longton in 1853.A white porcelain chamber pot decorated on two sides with large double pink roses and a blue floral leafed pattern. It has a fluted self pattern around the lower half of the pot, a gold line trim near the top and a decorative fluted handle. Original of this photo comes from the photograph album (B09.0003) of Noelle Kendall ( Vaughan, graduated 1919.) Note by T.H.Kneen 19 November 1991, "Shows potting shed and at left an open fronted store for seedling boxes. The cold frames in the centre were replaced by a glasshouse. The watering can held by the student was standard equipment in the nursery." Later examination by Eric Littlejohn suggests a quite different purpose for open fronted store, he recalls it being used for storage of tobacco leaf. This pot contained ointment made by Thomas Holloway. The ointment was invented and produced by the Englishman Thomas Holloway from 1837 on. This particular pot was produced about the 1920s. The ointment was popular for those suffering from variety of ailments including gout, rheumatism, ulcers and bruises. The sales of Thomas Holloway’s patent medicines made him a wealthy man and amongst his endowments is the Holloway College in Surrey, England, now part of London University. This ointment pot has no known local provenance but is kept as an interesting example of patent medicines of the past. It will be useful for display. This is a white china pot with a lid fitting into a grooved top. The lid has a black and white image of the trade mark of the ointment firm – said to be the figure of the Muse, Hygeia and her brother Telesphorus. The child is holding a banner with the address of the Holloway business and the prices of the ointment jars.
