The ladies and gentlemen are dressed in very fine clothes. All of the men are wearing suits with waistcoats and white shirts with neck ties. One man has a Boater hat , 4 have Bowler hats and 5 have Stetson hats. 5 men are standing and 4 men are kneeling or sitting with the ladies. The ladies are seated on the ground around a table runner on which items of food are seen. Most of the ladies are wearing white dresses, one lady has a dark coloured skirt with a white frilly blouse, and all have large wide brimmed fashionably decorated hats . They all seem to be dressed in their best clothes.The photograph depicts a group of men and women, 16 altogether, having a picnic pre World War 1 1914-1918 . A puggaree, usually of pleated cloth, has been worn on the Australian slouch hat since it was adopted in 1903. During WWI (1914-1918) it was frequently a plain woollen band made from puttee material. Different coloured bands denoting Corps were incorporated into the puggaree worn by militia units shortly before WWI and again in the period between the wars. The Gurley enterprise was established in 1845, first as the partnership of Phelps & Gurley and in 1852 as W. & L. E. Gurley. William Gurley and his younger brother Lewis E. were both engineering alumni of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, in Troy, NY, and brought to the business a hunger for technical innovation and unrivaled marketing skill. Exposure at the Centennial Exposition in 1876 launched the company into international prominence from which it never fell. The brothers built a factory in 1852 that operated in departments, each department turning out different components, which were then assembled. This revolutionized the industry which, to that time, operated as small shops making, essentially, individual instruments. Leah Rosenthal ARRC (Born Melbourne) Enlisted in 1915 and embarked 18.12.15 from Australia to join the QAIMNSP service. Her service was terminted on 9.5.19. She was awarded the ARRC (2nd class) for her work at a CCS on the Western Front. Articles written about her state that she was also awarded an "MM". ARRC, (Royal Red Cross). CCS, (Casualty Clearing Station). MM, (Military Medal) QAIMNSP, (Queen Alexandria's Imperial Military Nursing Service) A brother Samuel was KIA in the war, refer 620. The badge was an “Empress Club 1914 Emergency Voluntary Aid Committee badge”which was a Ladies Club in Dover street Piccadilly. “Fortiter Fideliter” meaning “Strongly Faithful”. The centre of the badge is a Maltese Cross. There is a ribbon with the badge but missing. During WW1 the Club was used as a War Supply Depot. In 1917 a Red Cross hut was opened on the roof of the building. Pre war Leah had done her training at Alfred Hospital. After the war Leah and close friend Isabella Jobson bought St Lukes Private Hospital and renamed it “Vimy House”. Leah passed away in 1930. Isabella inaugurated and annual prize in Leah’s name at the Alfred Hospital for the best Theatre Nurse. As this photo relates to pre WW1 taken at the Bendigo Race Course it will relate to Fredericks brother, Herbert Spencer Hutson No 3540 57th Bn. Herbert had pre war service in the 67th Militia Bn in Bendigo. (Born Kilmore, enlisted Bendigo) also in the 8th Reo’s 21st Bn and also transferred to the 57th Bn same day as his brother. Pre World War I Militia Unit. Taken at Bendigo Race Course stand. Black and white portrait of irregularly dressed soldier and one white dog. They are both seated and standing. Various head dress. Their rifles are Martini - Henry single shot. There appears to be a Chaplain in the group. Group size approx. 100 soldiers. In the grand stand behind them are various pieces of kit. They are probably Bendigo's 67 Infantry in front of the Bendigo Race Course stand. Ena Sophia Jarvis, nee Morant 1914-2004 migrated with her family from England and arrived in Eltham about 1938. Ena helped establish Eltham's first kindergarten and worked as an assistant and volunteer at Eltham Pre School for many years through to the early 1990s. Eltham Primary School. This building is the earliest building remaining on site today. It was built in 1875 and was the second school building replacing the original 1856 building of stone walls with wooden shingles on the roof. That building needed to be replaced after the stone walls collapsed outwards. In August 1912 the school issued a requisition for remodelling of the school concerned with replacement of the existing windows with larger and wider windows to allow additional light into the school rooms and the erection of a wooden partition in the centre of the room. This work commenced in early 1914 and this photo shows the altered windows. Pre 1921 extension and skylights in roof. Only two low wooden stairs present to enter the porch. These were rebuilt by 1928. A steel mud grate was introduced 1930s/1940s and an infant shelter shed is shown on the 1945 plan.
