James Leslie Pell RAN No 35213 Stoker mechanic, served on HMAS Bataan, (D9/I91/D191) a Tribal-class destroyer during the Korean War 1951-52. He later served on HMAS Melbourne, a Majestic-class light fleet aircraft carrier later in the 1950's. These photographs are from his personal album, and portray events and place to which he would have been witness. Refer to catalogue item 5455 for his service details. In 1988 Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip travelled across Australia to take part in the bicentenary celebrations. In April Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip arrived in Geelong to open the Wool Week Display in the almost complete National Wool Centre. Crowds gathered to welcome the royal couple, wool shearing demonstrations took place outside the centre and “Spud” the sheepdog exhibited his heading talents. During their visit to the wool centre they were met by the chairman of the Geelong Regional Commission, Mr Colin Atkins and Mrs Monique Atkins. The Queen was presented with a rug woven by the museums 1910 gripper-type Axminster Jacquard carpet loom and the Duke was presented with a woollen jumper. In return the Queen presented three letters from the archives of the Windsor Castle to the museum. The couple left in the afternoon, charming the Geelong crowd. Two black and white photographs of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, accompanied by the City of Greater Geelong Mayor, Jim Fidge, watching a shearing demonstration by local Geelong shearers outside the then National Wool Centre. This was the first visit of Queen Elizabeth to Australia following her coronation in 1953. Queen Elizabeth is the only British monarch to have visited Australia. She visited Hamilton on 26th February. School children from Warrnambool were transported to Hamilton showgrounds to stand in lines to view the Queen and the Duke standing in a land rover. All school children received a commemorative medal.These medals are retained as a memento of the Queen's visit in 1954.Three identical gold coloured metal medals. Each medal is attached by a ring to a bar with decorative surrounds. The bar has text. The obverse of the medal features profiles of Queen Elizabeth 11 and the Duke of Edinburgh. The reverse has a crown and text. There is a pin clip on the reverse of the bar. The 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles was raised as a regiment of the Royal Australian Armoured Corps on 1 May 1948 with Headquarters in Melbourne and squadrons in Sale, Benalla/Wangaratta and Albury. In 1955 Regimental Headquarters moved to Wangaratta and a second squadron was located at Albury. The Sale squadron transferred to 4th/19th Prince of Wales’s Light Horse. In 1977 8/13 VMR Regiment was reduced to an independent squadron A Squadron 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles and in 1991 was linked with 4th/19th Prince of Wales’s Light Horse forming the VMR Squadron of that regiment. The queen was resident at Government House Melbourne for nine days and during the time guard duties were shared by 1st Battalion Royal Australian Regiment, 3rd Division Royal Australian Artillery, 5th Infantry Battalion (Victorian Scottish), 6th Infantry Battalion (Royal Melbourne Regiment), 4th/19th Prince of Wales's Light Horse, 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles, 2nd Medium Regiment, 22nd Field Regiment and Melbourne University Rifles. Rare document relating to guard duty at Government House Melbourne mounted by a unit of the Citizen Military Forces from Victoria during a royal visit .Photocopy of a three page report prepared for period 1/2 March 1954 when 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles Regiment provided the guard at Government House Melbourne during the visit of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The report lists the officer, 4 non commissioned officers and 20 other ranks comprising the guard together with timings and locations of the sentry posts.
