McAlpin's was a major Victorian flour company in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Rita Madigan (nee McLean) was a lifetime Emerald resident. Vera's parents were long term residents of Emerald throughout most of the 20th century. Vera's father, Jim Madigan, was the butcher at Emerald for many years. The Madigan family were long term residents and business owners in Emerald. Jim Madigan was the local Butcher once he returned from World War 1. Rita's father owned the Emerald bakery since 1917. These spectacles belonged to Rita Madigan (nee McLean) in the 1940s and were donated to the Emerald Museum by Vera Madigan, one of Jim and Rita's daughters. Jim and Rita had two daughters, one being Vera, and the other Shirley.Black celluloid circular spectacles with gold-coated/plated hook arms. The small accompanying case is constructed with a hard plastic with a thin textured coating. The inside has a protective royal blue velvet coating. Rita's Husband Timothy (Jim) Madigan (1898-1979) served in World War 1 and Rita was a member of the William Angliss Hospital Auxiliary, the Knoxbrooke Auxiliary and the Emerald Welfare Association. Jim was one on the foundation members of the Emerald RSL. These badges were awarded to Rita for her membership and service during her involvement in the Women's Auxiliary. Rita was also issued a Widow of World War 1 Veteran Travel pass. It is estimated that the travel pass was issued after Jim Madigan's death in 1979 as he was a veteran of World War I.
