Rita's Husband Timothy (Jim) Madigan (1898-1979) served in World War 1 and Rita was a member of the William Angliss Hospital Auxiliary, the Knoxbrooke Auxiliary and the Emerald Welfare Association. Jim was one on the foundation members of the Emerald RSL. These badges were awarded to Rita for her membership and service during her involvement in the Women's Auxiliary. Rita was also issued a Widow of World War 1 Veteran Travel pass. It is estimated that the travel pass was issued after Jim Madigan's death in 1979 as he was a veteran of World War I. The Madigan family were long term residents and business owners in Emerald. Jim Madigan became the local butcher. Rita's father owned the Emerald bakery since 1917. Jim and Rita had two daughters, Shirley and Vera. Vera has shared much of the Madigan family history with the Emerald Museum.

Significance

These badges reflect Rita Madigan's (nee McLean) connection to and involvement in the two World Wars.
