Robert Simeon and Mary Ann Nelson had six children, four of whom lived to adulthood. He served in the army during WWI, was injured, and lost an arm. He married Sarah Jane Willoughby in 1923, and lived all his life in Linton. The Dawe family migrated to Victoria in 1857. They first lived at Geelong but are believed to have settled in Linton shortly after their daughter Mary Ann married Robert Simeon Nelson in 1864. The photograph was printed from a glass plate negative found after death of the donor's uncle. ... that along with his son-in-law Robert Simeon Nelson, William Dawe... that along with his son-in-law Robert Simeon Nelson, William Dawe ...The Dawe family shop is thought to have been in Sussex Street/Skipton Road, opposite Wishart's forge. W. Dawe is shown on the Township of Linton plan as the owner of Allotment 4, Section 1A. Municipal directories show "William Dawe, Fruiterer" in the 1880s, and from the 1890s "Thomas Dawe, Fruiterer". (Thomas was William Dawe's son.) Reports in the Ballarat Star in 1875 and 1876 show that along with his son-in-law Robert Simeon Nelson, William Dawe was was a partner in the 'Bristol Reef (or Bristol Quartz) Company'. From about 1901, the Dawe shop also briefly included the undertaking business run by William Dawe's grandson, R. S. Nelson (the younger). ... and married James Nelson (the second son of Robert Simeon Nelson... and married James Nelson (the second son of Robert Simeon Nelson ...Priscilla Nelson, born 1869, grew up at Happy Valley and married James Nelson (the second son of Robert Simeon Nelson and Mary Ann Dawe) in 1890. Priscilla and James had six children - James, Theophilus, Norman, Pearl, Mary and Violet. James established a carpentry/undertaking business on "Church Hill" in Linton (near the Presbyterian Church), but after his brother John Nelson died in 1900, he inherited the Nelson premises in Sussex Street which had been built by his father, and he moved his business and family to this location. This photograph shows Priscilla Nelson with her grandson Theo (son of Theophilus Nelson). The photograph is understood to have been taken in 1939. Priscilla Nelson died in 1941.Enlarged black and white copy of original photograph which has been mounted on white card. The photograph shows an older lady wearing a had and a coat with a fur trim.
