After training as a Cartographic Draftsman within the mining industry, I worked as a property illustrator for real estate firms in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne for 22 years from 1983. I initially photographed houses with a Polaroid camera and made a 'thumbnail' sketch while there. The photos were used to scale off a sketch in pencil and then that sketch was overlaid with drafting film and the 'pen and ink' completed. The pens I used were the Rotring ‘Rapidigraph’ drafting pens. The ink was also made by Rotring (German).The film was ‘Rapidraw’, polyester drafting film, double matte. It takes a very fine line and doesn’t bleed. As well as house sketches, there were often floor plans and site plans ordered. Aerial sketches were ordered when the property needed an overall view. This photo of a shop window display in Rochester was presented to Arthritis Victoria by Barabara Wolfe, a member of the Rochester Arthritis Support Group. The window display was organised to help promote 'Arthritis Awareness Week' (probably National Arthritis Week), which ran from the 30th of March to the 11h of April, 2000.COL photo of a shop window display. Among the items on display are a plastic skeleton on a vertical stand, books, brochures, information sheets, posters, and a VicHealth Masters Games promotional t-shirt. Our group had a display - took videos, aids, windcheaters etc - in an empty shop window in our main shopping street. It was there for 12 days. [New paragraph] On the 11th April we had a walk along the Campaspe River, leaving 9:30am, returning 10:30am. This enabled people to go as far as they wished at their own pace and join together for morning tea (B.Y.O.) and a Fun Quiz. Ten of our group were joined by our friends. It was most enjoyable. Text, RVIB Rochester Auxiliary, 1958 - 2006
The Rochester RVIB Auxiliary formed December 12, 1931. This small collection contains index cards which were maintained by RVIB and contain the amount of donations made by the Auxiliary between 1976-1995, as well as the presentations delivered by RVIB employees to Auxiliary meetings between 1973-1985. Correspondence to and from RVIB head office ranging between 1990-2001. A questionnaire conducted by RVIB Head Office in 1999 showed that the Rochester Auxiliary had 4 female committee members between the ages of 70 to 80 years old. It is noted that mementos of the Auxiliary have be stored at the Rochester Historical Society. It was taken late on a Saturday morning and shows the regular goods train of that period approaching, then crossing the bridge. I originally planned to take just one view. The approaching train was first then it was a rapid run back along the raised river bank to get the broadside shot. I had little time to steady myself or properly check camera settings, hence the slightly soft focus etc. The train would eventually continue over the Echuca Iron Bridge into NSW. A folder containing newspaper cuttings of the visit in 1952 by The Mayor and Mayoress of Rochester in the U.K. to Bendigo and Rochester. This camera is a Premo model made early in the 20th century by the Eastman Kodak company of U.S.A. Premo model cameras were produced in three sizes. Box cameras such as this were produced up to the mid 1920s and were popular with amateur photographers because of the simplicity of the mechanism. This camera has no known local provenance but is retained for display purposes.This is a rectangular-shaped wooden box covered with a black leather trim. On one side is a leather handle attached by two metal buttons. The lid was originally opened by two metal clips at one end and two metal hinges at the other but most of these attachments are now missing. Recessed into the lid are two compartments for storing the film plates. Inside the lid is a glass plate covering the storage area and a spring-loaded lens mechanism with a glass lens and a pleated cloth attached to this lens. The Box brownie camera was invented by Frank A Brownell in 1900 and further improved from 1901. Because it was easy to use, cheap and portable it became very popular. This small film development system was developed by Kodak for the amateur photographer. It was a small portable system which made the development of film more accessible to the enthusiast.This is an interesting item and quite innovative and as such has historic and scientific and research significance.A stained wooden rectangular box with dovetailed corners and a lid which is loose and sits inside a ridge.There are two holes drilled in both the longer sides of the box. The lid has a smaller raised section with Kodak Film Tank in red and black text a paper chart is stuck to the underpart of the lid..The interior of the box is painted black and there is a metal cylindrical tin with a lid and inner section.There is a spool attached to one end of the box.There are four loose items, two long prongs with black plastic knobs, a similar length implement with a straight shaft and hooked section on the end and a metal spool.Kodak film Tank on the lid of the box and the lid of the cylinder.
