He served in the army during WWI, was injured, and lost an arm. He married Sarah Jane Willoughby in 1923, and lived all his life in Linton. The Dawe family migrated to Victoria in 1857. They first lived at Geelong but are believed to have settled in Linton shortly after their daughter Mary Ann married Robert Simeon Nelson in 1864.
