This douche, with the manufacturers object description of "heisswasserspulungen" which translates as healing water douche, came from the Edward Rowden White Estate. The heisswasserpular designed by Dr Walzer-Frank was used as a vaginal douche by attaching a rubber hose to the glass connector which was then inserted into the vagina. Acquired from Dr Harold Attwood, the Curator of the Medical History Unit, University of Melbourne, 2 April 1996. In a letter to Geoff Bishop ... Originally located on large oak reading table in the Rowden White Library until the end of 2003. Replaced by brass versions made by Thomas Mintsenikos on 26th May 2004.In 1938 Dr Alfred E. Rowden White contributed 1,000 pounds and his own personal book collection to the University of Melbourne Student Union to establish the library that still bears his name. Rowden White's idea was that students should have access to materials beyond those prescribed for their courses. Harriet Cecilia Hordern Williams (1889 - 1968) was the grand-daughter of William Hordern (1830 - 1881) and Cecelia Monger (1830 - 1914). William Hordern was the sixth of seven children of Anthony Hordern Snr. who established the Anthony Hordern & Sons department store in Sydney which operated from 1923 to 1970. Harriet's mother Cecilia (1854 - 1934) was married to Christopher Williams. Harriet's uncle William was appointed commissioner of the Supreme Court of South Australia in 1903. Her cousin Doris Amelia Hordern (1889 - 1970), as Doris Blackburn won the Federal seat of Bourke in 1946 following the death of her husband who had previously held the seat. This branch of the Hordern family has a strong connection to Hawthorn through their home "Stramshall" in Auburn Road Hawthorn and also with the Auburn Baptist Church. Harriet Williams enlisted in the Australian Army Nurse in December 1916 and served as a Staff Nurse until her marriage in London in 1919. This certificate is significant to the history of Hawthorn and Australia through its connection with the Hordern family, the home Stramshall in Hawthorn and with the Auburn Baptist Church. It is significant to the history of the Royal Children's Hospital Melbourne as an example of early 20th century training protocol, in the persons who signed the certificate and the photographs of the hospital buildings of that time. This certificate was issued to Mary Freitag on 6th June 1910 on completion of her three years' training at St. Vincent's Training School for Nurses. It is signed by Mary Berchmans Daly, the Mother Rectress, and by A. E. Rowden-White, the honorary lecturer. Mary Freitag registered as a nurse and then went on to join the Australian Army Nursing Service in June 1917 and was posted to the Deccan War Hospital at Poona, India, which had 1,200 beds. There she tended the wounded soldiers brought from the battlefiends of Mesopotamia (Iraq). In March 1919, Mary then served on the hospital ship Varela before leaving the nursing corps to marry in September 1919.This item is of historical significance as an example of a graduation certificate that was issued to nurses at that time. It is a record of the service of Mary Freitag and it includes the signature of the Mother Rectress, Mary Berchmans Daly.Certificate hard bound in board covered with black leather. Dr. Joseph Clover (1825-1882), an English physician, first described his Portable Regulating Ether Inhaler on Jan. 20, 1877. Clover was an especially sought after anesthesiologist and early pioneer in the specialty. This was the best-known of many inhalers that Clover designed. The dome-shaped reservoir was turned to points on a control dial to gradually increase or decrease the percentage of the air that passed over the ether. Several inventors based new inhalers on this, while the original continued to be manufactured as late as the beginning of WWII.Metal dome chamber with flat base and two circular pains of glass on each side of the dome as viewing holes. There is a long connector tube with an elbow joint attached to a bulb for a rebreather bag.
