These handsaws belonged to a Warrnambool furniture maker and dealer, Ernest Brighton Phillips (1875-1924). He learned cabinet making at the Warrnambool Box Works and established a furniture warehouse at the corner of Liebig and Koroit Streets in the late 1890s. By the early 20th century he had the largest furniture warehouse and factory in Victoria outside Melbourne and his furniture was sold all over Australia. He and his family lived at ‘Heatherlie’ in Koroit Street and today the site of this family home houses the retirement village complex known as ‘Heatherlie’. The makers of these saws was Robert Sorby of the Kangaroo Works in Sheffield, England. This business was established in 1928 and is one of the world’s premier manufacturers of specialist woodworking tools. These two tools are of some significance as they belonged to Ernest Phillips, a prominent businessman in Warrnambool at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries. These are also a good example of the type of tools used in the woodworking trade 100 years ago. These are two handsaws which belonged to Ernest Phillips. They have wooden handles attached to the blade by metal screws. One screw is missing on the larger saw. The blades are made of steel with serrated edges and they are inserted into a fold of steel along the top edge. The handles are well-worn and the blades are a little rusty. ‘Robt. This Bodmann mitre saw set was used in the making of components for the ship model Sovereign of the Seas. It is part of a collection of objects used by Jim Williams, maker of fine ship models from about 1930-1955. Most of the components for the models, as well as many of the tools, were handmade by Jim Williams. Jim’s family has donated the ship model “Sovereign of the Seas” and many tools, accessories and documents used in the making of this and other ship models have been donated to Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village. ABOUT the BRAND NAME ON THE SAW - BODMANN and CO, Germany In 1927 the Brisbane Courier Mail described Bodmann and Co of Reinscheid, Germany as "manufacturers of guaranteed tools and hardware. It appears that at least the saw has been re-badges and sold by Bodmann because (1) there are remnants of a label on the saw blade similar in shape to the Bodmann label on the mitre set (2) the removed label reveals the name and logo of "ULMIA Schutz OTT Marke" (3) one of the "Bodmann" labels on the saw handle has been applied in a crooked manner, almost leaving off the last "N". ULMIA is a German manufacturer of high quality woodworking tools. A drawing of a very similar mitre bset with saw can be seen on the ULMIA website. In 2002 the long established company ANKE of Swabian Alb, Germany (makers of cut timber, workbenches and countertops) bought out the name and trademark rights of ULMIA. HISTORY OF SOVEREIGN OF THE SEA (brief) Ship model of HMS Sovereign of the Seas, scale model of 17th Century English war ship, was handmade and carved from plans, enclosed in airtight glass case. All components of that model, including even the smallest pulleys, were hand crafted using tools designed and made by Jim. Outstanding details include functional rigging and moving cannons. Please see our record 3732 of the mode Sovereign of the Seas for further details of the ship and the Jim Williams. This mitre saw set is connected with the hobby and skill of ship model making that has been crafted as a leisure activity for many generations. The hobby is often chosen by serving and retired mariners who appreciate the connection with maritime history. This mitre saw set was used by local Warrnambool man, Jim Williams, who was employed at Cramond and Dickson clothing store, and then at Fletcher Jones menswear for 27 years. It was used in making components for the model of the historic ship, the Sovereign of the Seas. The Sovereign of the Seas was a historic 17th century English war ship with important maritime heritage. Logging was a major industry in the region for decades. Before the advent of power tools, loggers would first make a 'scarf' in the trunk - a notch made with axes where the saw can more easily rest - before taking a large saw to the wood to cut through the rest of the trunk.Forestry was a vital industry to the region; this example from Monbulk is a good demonstration of the pre-power tools methods of treecutting. The main item is a black and white photograph mounted on cream card. The reverse of the card is blank with the exception of a museum accession number in the bottom-right. The photograph is centered on a large tree, taking up about the central quarter of the shot. Two men are elevated off the ground on either side of the tree, while two more stand on the ground to the left of the shot looking at the camera. The two men around the tree are in the process of sawing through it, with a large cut (including the 'scarf', a notch made with axes) already visible. There are two other copies of this photograph in our collection, both printed on ordinary printer paper. Each has different handwritten annotations, which are included in this entry.Copy 1 Reverse: "Copy only / Felling a giant tree at / Conner's Monbulk date unknown" Copy 2 Annotation: "Took 5 hours & 3 men to saw a / big tree down. Used in the timber industry in the Orbost district. This is a two person operated cross cut saw which functions as a pit saw. A log is placed over a pit lengthways. The man on the top walks along the log and pulls the saw upwards, and he man below pulls the saw downwards. This saw therefore cuts in both directions. This type of saw was often used in the ship building industry for cutting planks.A long raker saw which has been installed into the Slab Hut Shed in a vertical position as a pit saw. A saw is a tool consisting of a tough blade, wire, or chain with a hard-toothed edge. It is used to cut through material, very often wood, though sometimes metal or stone. The cut is made by placing the toothed edge against the material and moving it forcefully forth and less vigorously back or continuously forward. This force may be applied by hand, or powered by steam, water, electricity or other power sources. An abrasive saw has a powered circular blade designed to cut through metal or ceramic. In ancient Egypt, open (unframed) saws made of copper are documented as early as the Early Dynastic Period, circa 3,100–2,686 BC. Many copper saws were found in tombs dating to the 31st century BC. Models of saws have been found in many contexts throughout Egyptian history. As the saw developed, teeth were raked to cut only on the pull stroke and set with the teeth projecting only on one side, rather than in the modern fashion with an alternating set. Saws were also made of bronze and later iron. In the Iron Age, frame saws were developed holding the thin blades in tension. The earliest known sawmill is the Roman Hierapolis sawmill from the third century AD used for cutting stone. The subject item at this time cannot be associated with an historical event, person or place, provenance is unknown, as the maker is unknown but the pattern or design and type of wood used indicate it is a tool of modern manufacture around the mid to late 20th century.Wood hand saw with wooden handle attached to saw by 4 rivets. The tips of each cutting tooth of a saw are bent (set) slightly away from the plane of the saw. Alternate teeth are set (and sharpened) in opposite directions. The set helps prevent the saw binding in the wood by cutting a kerf (the slot in the wood) that is slightly wider than the saw's thickness. Too little set and the saw binds; too much set results in more work to cut the wider kerf and could lead to too much side movement of the saw and a curving cut. The saw set gauge is used to measure the set of the saw tooth. The amount of set can be from almost nothing in dry hardwood to perhaps 1mm for some softwoods. The spider has three legs of the same length and a longer fourth leg. On a flat surface, the three short legs contact the surface while the long leg is just shy of the surface by the degree of 'set'. The spider is placed such that the three short legs are on the face of the saw with the longer leg touching the tip of the tooth - the tooth is bent to match the gauge.metal spiders used to set the teeth of crosscut sawsforests commission victoria (fcv), hand tools
