... 'The Big Malleeefowl' sculptures installed by artist Phil Rigg in 2013....Colour photograph of malleefowl sculpture built almost entirely from painted corrugated iron. ...'The Big Malleeefowl' sculptures installed by artist Phil Rigg in 2013. ...Malleefowls (Leipoa Ocellata) are shy, ground-dwelling birds that make their homes in Mallee country. The nearby Wyperfeld National Park in Hopetoun is a known habitat. The malleefowl mounds are one of the most fascinating things about the malleefowl. Unlike most birds, they don’t build nests in trees or on the ground. Instead, they create large nesting mounds of sand, soil, and organic material, sometimes up to 5 metres in diameter and 1 metre in height. After the female malleefowl lays the eggs, the heat generated by the decomposition of the organic material inside the mound incubates them. The male bird constantly adjusts the temperature by adding or removing material. It’s a process that can take several months and requires meticulous care, making the malleefowl parents some of the most dedicated. Their breeding season is between September and January, and use the same malleefowl mounds for multiple seasons. Malleefowl chicks often hatch from November to January. Mallee is a type of bushland found in parts of Victoria and South Australia. It’s made up of scraggly, multi-stemmed eucalyptus trees that are very tough and can survive in dry, harsh conditions. It was constructed of Corten Steel in 1994 and won the Eltham Public Art Award in 1996. “Award winning sculptor, Cliff Burtt, often references the geometry of architectural forms in his bold, minimalist public sculptures. In this corten steel work the repeated arches of the temples of antiquity are in dialogue with the nearby spans of the railway trestle bridge that cuts through the Eltham parkland. The formality of the architecture is offset by the organic sweeps of the top profile of the work, which playfully acknowledges the hilly topography of the region” – Highlights from the Nillumbik Art Collection Two colour photographs of iron sculptureclassical landscape, sculptures, art, parks, alistair knox park, eltham, cliff burtt, public art -

Noted sculptor Ian Bow was commissioned and created Urban Cycle, a seven panel metal sculpture that follows the development of the local area. Prior to receiving the commission, Ian Bow went through a period of temporary vision loss, which gave him insight into how the sculpture could be appreciated by the blind and low vision community. The different stages are: Harmony - Two pelicans amongst reeds. Intrusion - Frog, kookaburra, mice, fish, lizard and butterfly. Expansion - Doors, windows and roofs under tree canopies. Industry - A factory with large chimney blowing smoke. Density - Multiple boxes, some with figures inside, are crowded beneath a bridge and dome. Decay - Boxes with broken doors and unfinished concrete. Renewal - A church with a Calvary cross over roughened surface.Heptagonal cast aluminium sculpture with seven panels arranged around a central metal pole. Thanks to the generosity of Evangeline Annie Fisher this sculpture, entitled 'Urban Cycle', was created by Ian Bow in 1975 and depicts stages of development of a city through the use of tactile forms.
