This wooden condom former has no defined manufacture date and was used in the production of rubber condoms in Melbourne by the rubber goods manufacturer Ansell. Wooden formers of this type were used from 1905 till 1945. The condom former would be dipped tip first into liquid rubber and the covering left to dry, and then the resulting condom packaged and sold. This object was acquired by the Richmond and Burnley Historical Society in the 1970’s on the closing of the Ansell factory located on River St, Richmond. This object has historical significance at a national level, as it is associated with the use and manufacture of sexual health devices within the broader Australian context. It also holds local historical significance as a marker of local manufacturing and industry in Victoria. Alongside these points it is also a large part of the story that surrounds the creation of Ansell Industries as we know them in a modern context. Wooden condom former/ mold. The medical instrument is used for the treatment of Trichomonas Vaginitis. Insufflation has been a medical practice since the early nineteenth century, the earliest mention of it appearing in 1823. There are descriptions of its therapeutic and diagnostic purposes in connection with almost every cavity of the body. Despite being used widely across many Victorian health institutions, insufflation has not been regarded as a dangerous procedure.The object is significant because it is representative of medical treatments used to cure sexually transmitted diseases in Aradale Mental Hospital in the 1940's. Dr William Bottomley (1881-1952) was a specialist based at Collins Street who advocated for humanist and practical solutions to public health issues. His love of the Emerald countryside which he visited at weekends with his family led him to being the primary instigator of the late 1920s development - the iconic and beautiful Emerald Country Club. He later retired to Emerald where he built a Modernist-inspired home, Silver Birches, which is of architectural significance. This 1911 booklet outlines his argument for sexually transmitted diseases to be treated as a public health issue instead of the practice at that time which was to blame the victim.This book is significant because it outlines Dr Bottomley's argument for treating sexually transmitted diseases as a public health problem in the early 20th century when this was not a widely held view.
