Sun Crescent Shopping Centre emerged in the 1960s–1970s as a redeveloped section of Hampshire Road, created when the road alignment was altered and the former 1920s–1930s shop rows were renamed Sun Crescent. It became a small but important neighbourhood retail strip serving the residential blocks around the Sunshine Railway Station and Town Hall precinct. 1920s–1930s — Original Hampshire Road shops Before Sun Crescent existed, the area was part of the main Hampshire Road commercial strip. The Keilor Downs Shopping Centre, now known as Keilor Central, began as a purpose‑built suburban retail hub in 1990 and has evolved through several ownership, branding, and expansion phases. It was developed as part of the rapid suburban growth of Keilor Downs in the late 1980s–early 1990s, coinciding with the opening of the Keilor Downs Post Office in May 1990. The plaza was anchored by major tenants including Kmart and Coles, establishing it as the suburb’s primary retail destination. These photographs, taken by The Advocate newspaper, capture the official opening of the new shopping centre. After months of construction, planning, and community interest, the ceremony marked a significant milestone for the district. In the 1840s–1860s, Keilor was a major stopping point for travellers heading to Mount Macedon, the central Victorian goldfields, and pastoral runs to the north and west. The road running through Keilor was therefore known as the Mount Macedon Road and later shorten to Macedon Street, long before the Calder Highway system was formally gazetted in the early 20th century. Miss Olive Codling was a Foundation Member and a Life Member of the Wodonga Historical Society. Many of her prize-winning photos are held in the Society Collection. She also held a range of roles and committee positions in a wide range of Wodonga community organisations. These included the Horticultural Society, the Wodonga Arts Council, the Wodonga Camera Club and the Wodonga Lapidary Club. This photo collection is significant as it documents how the businesses and buildings in Wodonga have evolved and contributed to community throughout the 20th century.J. Mann and Sons was first established as a farm produce store in 1921. The range of products was extended in the 1930s and included groceries and hardware, as well as the first petrol bowser in Wodonga outside the store. After WWII, the premises were extended and the range of products continued to increase. In the 1960s the Mann Family opened a new supermarket in Wodonga, in addition to the hardware business, providing steel, plumbing and industrial supplies, and employed over 100 people. This site has since been redeveloped and is now the Mann Centre. The Forest Hill Chase Shopping Centre is amongst the oldest shipping centres in Victoria, opening on the 30th June 1964 as an outdoor strip shopping centre before being developed over the years into its current three-level form.
