Sun Crescent Shopping Centre emerged in the 1960s–1970s as a redeveloped section of Hampshire Road, created when the road alignment was altered and the former 1920s–1930s shop rows were renamed Sun Crescent. It became a small but important neighbourhood retail strip serving the residential blocks around the Sunshine Railway Station and Town Hall precinct. 1920s–1930s — Original Hampshire Road shops Before Sun Crescent existed, the area was part of the main Hampshire Road commercial strip. Shops between 107–117 Hampshire Road were built during the 1923–1925 period, including: Homewood’s Café (a major social hub) Confectioners Grocers Butchers Timber yards Small specialty shops This cluster formed part of Sunshine’s early civic and retail centre. 1960s — Road realignment and renaming During Sunshine’s mid‑century redevelopment, the section of Hampshire Road near the Town Hall was realigned. The old shop row at 107–117 Hampshire Road was renamed Sun Crescent. This renaming marks the birth of the Sun Crescent Shopping Centre. 1970s — Formation of a neighbourhood shopping strip By the 1970s, Sun Crescent had developed into a small but active local shopping centre. Typical businesses included: Milk bars Small grocers Hairdressers Takeaway shops Service businesses Local professional rooms Its customer base came from the dense residential blocks around the station, Town Hall, and Sunshine Technical School. 1980s–1990s — Stable neighbourhood centre Sun Crescent remained a modest but steady retail strip, overshadowed by the larger Hampshire Road and Sunshine Plaza precincts but still serving: Commuters Local residents Students Workers from nearby civic buildings Some older shops were redeveloped or replaced with modern commercial units. 2000s–2020s — Modern mixed‑use strip Today, Sun Crescent functions as: A secondary retail strip within the Sunshine Major Activity Centre A mix of small shops, services, and professional suites A transitional zone between the station precinct and residential streets Its heritage value lies in its connection to the original 1920s Hampshire Road shops and the mid‑century renaming that created the Sun Crescent identity.Sunshine Shopping Centres 492.3sunshine shopping centre, sun crescent, sunshine

The Glengala Road shopping strip in Sunshine West emerged during the 1960s–1970s, following post‑war suburban expansion. Its earliest shops appeared in the mid‑1920s, but the area did not become a true neighbourhood shopping centre until the post‑war immigration boom transformed Sunshine West into a residential suburb. Mid‑1920s — First development begins The Glengala Estate was laid out west of Kororoit Creek. Sunshine West was still semi‑rural, with the Sunshine Golf Club as one of the few landmarks. No substantial shopping strip existed yet. 1950s–1960s — Post‑war immigration boom Sunshine West expanded rapidly as new housing estates were built. Migrant families (Maltese, Greek, Italian, Yugoslav, later Vietnamese) settled in the area. This population growth created demand for a local shopping centre. 1960s — The Glengala Road shops emerge The strip between 66–88 Glengala Road becomes the core of the neighbourhood centre. By 1965, shops included: Furniture store (Aguis C.F.) Hardware store (Agius Carmelo “Charles”) Fruiterers Butcher Photo studio Confectioners Dry cleaners 1970s — Growth and diversification By 1970, the strip had expanded to include: Greek Club (community hub) Dry cleaners Blinds shop TAB Confectioners Butcher Furniture and hardware stores Late 1970s — Mixed‑business era By 1977, the strip included: Milk bar / mixed business Western & Continental Bread bakery TAB Other small retailers 1990s — Mature neighbourhood centre Photographs from 1992 show Glengala Road as a fully developed suburban shopping strip with bakeries, cafés, small retailers, and community activity.Sunshine Shopping Centres 492.3glengala road shopping centre, glengala road, sunshine west

The Keilor Downs Shopping Centre, now known as Keilor Central, began as a purpose‑built suburban retail hub in 1990 and has evolved through several ownership, branding, and expansion phases. It was developed as part of the rapid suburban growth of Keilor Downs in the late 1980s–early 1990s, coinciding with the opening of the Keilor Downs Post Office in May 1990. The plaza was anchored by major tenants including Kmart and Coles, establishing it as the suburb’s primary retail destination. These photographs, taken by The Advocate newspaper, capture the official opening of the new shopping centre. After months of construction, planning, and community interest, the ceremony marked a significant milestone for the district. Local dignitaries, business owners, and residents attended the event, reflecting the optimism surrounding the centre’s role in revitalising retail activity and providing a modern commercial hub for the surrounding suburbs.Opening Of Keilor Downs Shopping Centre By Mayor Of Keilor 6762.01 - Keilor Downs Shopping Centre Opening By Mayor Of Keilor Andrea Surace 1989.JPG Andrea Surace, Mayor of Keilor 6762.02 - Keilor Downs Shopping Centre Opening By Mayor Of Keilor Andrea Surace 1989.JPG Andrea Surace, Mayor of Keilor 6762.03 - Keilor Downs Shopping Centre Opening By Mayor Of Keilor Andrea Surace 1989.JPG Andrea Surace, Mayor of Keilor 6762.04 - Keilor Downs Shopping Centre Opening By Mayor Of Keilor Andrea Surace 1989.JPG Michael Wood, The entrepreneur who steered the project to completionkeilor downs shopping centre, keilor downs plaza, taylors road, keilor downs, andrea surace

In the 1840s–1860s, Keilor was a major stopping point for travellers heading to Mount Macedon, the central Victorian goldfields, and pastoral runs to the north and west. The road running through Keilor was therefore known as the Mount Macedon Road and later shorten to Macedon Street, long before the Calder Highway system was formally gazetted in the early 20th century. As the highway network developed, the route was progressively renamed and realigned, leaving the Keilor section with the heritage name Old Calder Highway.Keilor Village Shopping Centre 487.3keilor shopping centre, macedon street, old calder highway, keilor

Mann and Sons was first established as a farm produce store in 1921. The range of products was extended in the 1930s and included groceries and hardware, as well as the first petrol bowser in Wodonga outside the store. After WWII, the premises were extended and the range of products continued to increase. In the 1960s the Mann Family opened a new supermarket in Wodonga, in addition to the hardware business, providing steel, plumbing and industrial supplies, and employed over 100 people.
