This signature table cloth was anonymously donated to the Bacchus Marsh Blacksmith Cottage and Forge group in 2013. On the cloth are the hand embroidered names of men who served in WW1 as well as the names of family members, place names and dates of significance. In one corner of the cloth is the outline of a tennis ball, in which 6 names are listed. Research has shown that these names probably belonged to the Rose Park Methodist Tennis Club in Adelaide. Many of the other names listed seem to relate to servicemen and their families who came from South Australia. Also on this cloth are 3 beautifully embroidered butterflies, the profile of a man, a crest containing the letters B and H and the following place names and dates :- Sydney 21.10.12, Melbourne Jan 13, Goolwa, Genolan Caves NSW, Katoomba, Luna Park St Kilda and Granite Island. The author, Georges M. Ville (or George M Ville) was a French agriculturalist and botanist who lived from 1824-1897. His career began as a pharmacist and he is known for his research and experiments on the effects of nitrogen and chemical fertilisers on plants, mostly on his experimental farm, He wrote several books in his field of work. The book is part of Flagstaff Hill's Pattison Collection, a large group of books and records, some of which are rare and valuable. The collection was owned by the Warrnambool Mechanics' Institute, founded in 1853, and is named after Warrnambool's Public Librarian, Ralph Pattison. The handwritten comment on the fly page infers that the book was purchased by a Government subsidy in May 1910 and received in that same month. The book's publisher, Longman, Green & Co. was originally established by Thomas Longman founded his publishing firm in 1724 in London by the name Longman. In August of that year, he bought the two shops and goods of William Taylor and set up his publishing house there at 39 Paternoster Row. The shops were called Black Swan and Ship, and it is said that the 'ship' sign was the inspiration for Longman's Logo. After many changes of name and management, the firm was incorporated in 1926 as Longmans, Green & Co. Pty Ltd. The firm was acquired by Pearson in 1968 and was known as Pearson Longman or Pearson PLC. The Pattison Collection, along with other items at Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village, was originally part of the Warrnambool Mechanics' Institute’s collection. The Warrnambool Mechanics’ Institute Collection is primarily significant in its totality, rather than for the individual objects it contains. Its contents are highly representative of the development of Mechanics' Institute libraries across Australia, particularly Victoria. A diversity of publications and themes has been amassed, and these provide clues to our understanding of the nature of and changes in the reading habits of Victorians from the 1850s to the middle of the 20th century. The collection also highlights the Warrnambool community’s commitment to the Mechanics’ Institute, reading, literacy and learning in the regions, and proves that access to knowledge was not impeded by distance. These items help to provide a more complete picture of our community’s ideals and aspirations. The Warrnambool Mechanics Institute book collection has historical and social significance for its strong association with the Mechanics Institute movement and the important role it played in the intellectual, cultural and social development of people throughout the latter part of the nineteenth century and the early twentieth century. The collection of books is a rare example of an early lending library and its significance is enhanced by the survival of an original collection of many volumes. The Warrnambool Mechanics' Institute’s publication collection is of both local and state significance. One of thirty eight photographs from a photo album featuring images of the Returned Sailors and Soldiers Woollen Mill in Newtown, Geelong. The images were taken between the 1960's-1970's by Norm Holroyd who worked at the mills. They were developed in his own private dark room and kept at his home for private viewing. The Returned Sailors and Soldiers Woollen Mill operated as a self-sufficient co-operative, funded and run by World War I veterans using their War Gratuity Bonds. The facility functioned as a complete raw-to-finished assembly line where raw fleece was brought on-site to be scoured, carded, dyed, spun into yarn and woven. It specialised in heavy worsted cloths, high-quality tweed, and its signature "Retsol" and "Monarch" pure-wool travelling rugs, later adapting its machinery to blend natural wool with artificial fibres as mid-century market demands shifted.Black and white photograph attached to cardboard backing with sticky tape. Made by aunt of donor. Mountmellick embroidery is a traditional, heavy white-on-white (whitework) hand embroidery style that originated around 1825 in the town of Mountmellick in County Laois, Ireland. Developed by Johanna Carter, the craft is celebrated for its deeply textured, sculptural appearance and all-Irish origins. Strictly monochrome white-on-white (white thread on white fabric). Traditionally worked on heavy, firm cotton satin jean, providing a sturdy, durable base for household items like bedspreads, tablecloths, and doilies. Uses thick, matte, twistless or heavy cotton threads that do not divide, contrasting with the sheen of the cotton jean fabric. Inspired by the local Irish flora, including blackberries, brambles, oak leaves, dog roses, ivy, ferns, and shamrocks, as well as later cultivated garden plants. Features heavily padded and knotted stitches, such as satin stitch, French knots, stem stitch, buttonhole stitch, and the signature Mountmellick stitch (which creates a triangle-like, spiked outline effect)White linen with white embroidery around the turn of the century in the Mountmellick style. Large sprays of classical flowers and leaves decorate two sides of the cloth using traditional stitchery. The edge has a fine border and a scalloped finish.embroidery, table cloth, mountmellick style, australia, 1900-20
