Photo, from The Age used in item 7194 reporting on the closure of the St Kilda - Brighton tramway from Elwood depot to Middle Brighton on 1/7/1957. Photo shows Victorian Railways tram No. 35 at St Kilda Railway station with the privately operated bus behind. The service was operated by the Eastern Suburbs Omnibus Service using some half-cab buses. The bus is a Leyland OPS4 built in 1950 and subsequently sold to Eastern Suburbs Omnibus service in 1957. Was it on hire to the Brighton bus company? Yields information about replacement of trams on the St Kilda Brighton line by buses in July 1957. Opened in 1857, St Kilda Railway Station is the oldest surviving railway station in Victoria. In the 1920s it was the second busiest station in Victoria after Flinders Street. Competition from motor traffic led to the decline of the station and of St Kilda itself. Services on the line were reduced in 1981 and it was converted to a tram route in November 1987. In 1989, several fires damaged the timber station building and by December, the roof had been destroyed. Metropol Apartments at 60 & 64 Fitzroy Street, completed by 2002, were constructed on the station forecourt site. John Hitchen was the manager of the first Cheltenham Post Office that opened 1/8/1857 in a boot and shoe store. Mail was transported to and from St Kilda to Cheltenham by coach 6 days a week and an additional service twice weekly to Tootgarook via Frankston also by coach. 1868 Post office Savings Bank began operation and the Telegraph office was established at the Railway Station 1885. A new building was built 1891 in Point Nepean Road for the official Cheltenham Post Office and a new manual telephone exchange began 1899 with 24 subscribers. By 1909 100 subscribers, 1951 there were 1700 and in 1974 12,000 subscribers . Hence this new building was designed by Oscar A. T. Gimsey & Assoc. and built by T W Morris & Sons Mordialloc.
