In 1991, the station was located on the city side of Main Road West and the level crossing was still in operational. It wasn't until 2012, when the line was fully electrified to Sunbury as part of the Sunbury Electrification Project. The level crossing was removed in 2016 as part of the Victorian Government Level Crossing Removal Project (LXRP).The train pictured is a Hitachi Train, or commonly referred to as the Silver Train. They were Melbourne’s iconic stainless‑steel suburban trains, introduced from 1972 and running until 2014. These trains were the last of Victoria's fleet not to have air conditioning, and by the 2000's, they no longer met contemporary safety and accessibility standards. The Hitachi trains had replaced the Harris trains, also referred as the Blue Train or Bluey. The Harris trains were taken out of service because they contained asbestos. One of photographs clearly captures the termination of the "Down Line" at the St. Albans Railway Station.5664.01 - St. Albans Railway Station (Sun Adv 207.2) 1990 Photo 01.JPG 5664.02 - St. Albans Railway Station (Sun Adv 207.2) 1990 Photo 02.JPGst. albans railway station, main road west, st. albans, hitachi train -

With the increase in train traffic, both in suburban electrification service and in the country diesel service, the gates at the St. Albans Railway Station caused significant road traffic delays including causing several fatalities. The removal of these gates including the construction of a new underground station were completed as part of the State Government Grade Separation Project works in November 2016.These photographs capture the gates, Main Road East & Main Road West and the surrounding shops on the 25th May1969.GATES ST ALBANS 26TH MAY 69main road east, main road west, st. albans railway station, st. albans railway gates, st. albans -

Main Road West St. Albans St. Albans Level Crossing St. Albans Railway Station 5665 - Main Rd West - St. ...For many years, the Bendigo train line was one of Victoria's busiest lines thus the boom gates were down for long periods. This created driver frustration, risk‑taking behaviour, pedestrians weaving through gates and cars queueing across the track. The crossing was classified one of Melbourne’s most dangerous crossings and in the 2000's there were three fatalities and over 60 near misses. The level crossing was finally removed in 2016 as part of the Victorian Government Level Crossing Removal Project (LXRP).This picture documents the shops that were once located on the west side of the railway crossing on the North side of Main Road West. These shops were removed many years before the level crossing removal as part of pervious railway works. 5665 - Main Rd West - St. Albans Level Crossing Looking North - East 1969 Photo 01.jpgmain road west, st. albans, st. albans level crossing, st. albans railway station -

It was positioned on what is now the eastern service road / station car park area, facing the tracks. This was the standard placement for VR residences on the Bendigo line in the late 19th century. The house was removed in the 1970's when the station car park was expanded. The removal was also during the time when the practice of the removal of redundant VR housing stock was occurring. No trace remains today. This building was used as the official home of the Stationmaster at Albion Railway Station. This was standard Victorian Railways practice from the late 1800s through the mid‑20th century. Its functions included housing the stationmaster and their family, providing 24‑hour on‑call presence for emergencies, allowing the Stationmaster to supervise the yard, signals, and level crossing and acted as a local administrative base for the station’s operations Because Albion was a junction‑adjacent station (close to the Sunshine triangle and the goods sidings), the Stationmaster’s role at this station was significant.albion railway station, railway, albion -

Erected by Residents of St. Albans ...This is one of two Hume and Hovell Cairns erected in the City of Brimbank. The Sydenham cairn was erected on 19 December 1924, exactly 100 years after the explorers passed through the district. It was built by residents of St Albans and Sydenham as part of a statewide centenary program that installed 37 monuments along the expedition route. The monument has been moved twice due to road works as it was originally on the north‑west corner of Taylors Road & Sydenham Road. The first time it was relocated it was moved to position very close to the original position. The second time it was moved approximately 200 metres in a southerly direction and is now located at the Keilor Plains Station (East Esplanade). In November 2024, the Sydenham & District Historical Society held a 100‑year anniversary event for the cairn and a 200‑year anniversary of the 1824 expedition. Attendees included City of Brimbank Mayor Thuy Dang, Members of Natalie Suleyman MP’s office and local historians including Karen Schmidt and Bruce Lancashire. 5623.01 - Sydenham Hume And Hovell Monument 2nd April 2020 Photo 02.JPG 5623.02 - Sydenham Hume And Hovell Monument 2nd April 2020 Photo 03.JPG 5623.03 - Sydenham Hume And Hovell Monument 2nd April 2020 Photo 01.JPG Hume & Hovell passed here Dec. 19th 1824. The location of the first post office changed over time, from the Railway Station to general stores and to the site on the corners of Main Road West and McKechnie Street. During the 1980's and 1990's, as the commercial centre of St. Albans shifted towards Alfrieda Street, on the east side of the railway line, Australian Post moved its post office closer to Alfrieda Street. To meet the needs of the St. Albans residents, Australia Post moved to a new location closer to the new St. Albans commercial centre. ... In 1914 a branch railway line was opened from Benalla to Tatong that carried farm produce and timber to Tatong, which had two sawmills in the 1920s. There was also a general store, a police station, and a livestock trucking yard. St Albans ...Wooragee Landcare Group took a bus trip Sunday 5th September to Samaria, Tatong area (near Benalla) to look at land use on small farms. Around this time, Wooragee Landcare were looking into how small land holders could run some enterprises. This photo was taken at Tatong Tavern where the group had lunch. The Tatong Tavern is an old English style pub situated in the foothills of the Great Dividing Range the small community of Tatong 23km south-east of Benalla. The original weatherboard hotel was originally built in the 1880s by William Worrall who was listed as Hotel Keeper from 1886 to 1910. It was destroyed by fire in 1923 and replaced by the current building, which has undergone many changes over the past 100 years. The name has also changed from the Tatong Hotel or ‘Pub’ to the current name of Tatong Tavern.Tatong is a rural village in north-east Victoria, set in undulating country that rises southwards to the Tolmie ranges. The name is thought to derive from an Aboriginal expression, possibly referring to something unseen. The Tatong pastoral run was taken up in 1847 and farm selections began in the 1870s. A school opened in 1890 (closed in 2006). Dairy herds were grazed on the Tatong flats and a cooperative creamery operated from 1892 until 1918. In 1914 a branch railway line was opened from Benalla to Tatong that carried farm produce and timber to Tatong, which had two sawmills in the 1920s. There was also a general store, a police station, and a livestock trucking yard. St Albans Church of England was built in 1921. Most of those buildings have now disappeared. The Tatong Tavern along with the Hall built in 1904 are the only remaining buildings. The Tatong Tavern is a significant tangible and visual representation of the area’s cultural and social history over the past 100 years.
