Hermes 8 Standard Wide Carriage Typewriter Functional object Hermes 8 Standard Wide Carriage Typewriter Paillard ...Hermes typewriters were manufactured by Paillard S.A. of Yverdon in Switzerland. Paillard Ltd (originally Maison Paillard) was a premier Swiss precision engineering company which operated for 175 years. It developed from a small watchmaker collective into a global leader in typewriters as well as gramophones, radio sets and, under the name of Paillard-Bolex, cameras and film cameras. Paillard began making typewriters under the Hermes name in 1923. Early typewriters were usually heavy office typewriters but over time popular portable typewriters were added to their range. The Hermes Standard 8 typewriter was produced between 1953 and 1965. It was a heavy-duty desktop model. Typewriters of this model with a wide carriage were considered to be quiet rare. They were designed for the operator to be able to produce wide ledgers. However by 1963 its successor the Hermes Standard 9 had gone into production. With the rise of personal computers in the 1980s, typewriters gradually fell into obsolescence and came to be thought of as an outdated writing technology of the past. The company was ultimately taken over by Olivetti in 1981, and operations largely ceased by 1989. This item is significant because it was a popular and important piece of office equipment used in many Wodonga business in the 1950s and 1960s.A pale green Hermes Standard 8 typewriter with wide carriage.Serial Number 8120839 Hermes Standard 8 On back - HERMES / Made in Switzerland / paillard s.a. It was donated to the Wodonga Historical Society by Fred Rochow, a railwayman who spent many years based in Wodonga. He joined the Victorian Railways on 17th June l947 and retired in 1988. For some time, he was a member of the Australian Federated Union of Locomotive Enginemen and served a term as a member of the Trades Hall Council. He had an extensive knowledge of the struggles that took place to achieve better conditions for railway workers. Fred worked for many years as a fireman and then worked his way up the ranks to driver, experiencing many changes from the days of steam locomotives through to diesel trains, locomotives and even the modern XPT train. He worked throughout Victoria at different stages of his career, with his final working years focused on the northeast of Victoria and the Albury to Melbourne line. After his retirement, Fred continued to share his love of steam miniature trains with the community. S Class Locomotives - The eighteen members of the S Class were ordered in two batches by the Victorian Railways from Clyde Engineering for express passenger and freight workings, with the final eight locomotives ordered specifically to work the North-East standard gauge line. Many were named after prominent Victorians. This collection has local and statewide significance as it captures images of trains, locomotives and personnel who operated the railway services in Wodonga and throughout Northeast Victoria. The railways played a critical role in opening up Victoria and connecting Australia for trade, business, social communication and transport. The first standard gauge passenger train from Sydney to Melbourne pulled by Locomotive S314. This was made possible when part of Australia's gauge problem was solved with the construction of a new standard gauge line. The new line was a 317 km long line running from Albury, NSW, parallel to the existing broad gauge line to Melbourne, connecting Australia's two largest cities by standard gauge. S314 entered service on 24 April 1961 and was named after Sir John O'Shannassy who was the second Premier of Victoria. The S314 pulled the first passenger train to travel straight through from Sydney to Melbourne on 13 April 1962. On the morning of 7th February 1969, the southbound Southern Aurora collided head-on with a northbound goods train near Violet Town, Victoria. The Locomotive S314 was hauling the goods train and was destroyed by the impact of the collision. ... A Moorabbin Standard Newspaper article, May 9th 1984, with 2 x black and white photographs of the builder, Mr Arthur Smith, working on the Roof shingles during the reconstruction of Box Cottage in Joyce Park , Ormond. ...Written on article ; Moorabbin Standard, May 9th Wed. 1984...The Moorabbin Standard...Photograph, Newspaper article, 'Reconstruction of Box Cottage’ 1984 The Moorabbin Standard ...The original small, pioneer cottage was built in the late 1840s to early1850s, by an unknown pioneer. It was located on part of a 30 Acre allotment that was originally part of Dendy’s Special Survey granted in 1841. The doors and window sashes, (made of red deal joinery timber), as well as the brass locks and fittings, are from the original cottage, and were imported from England. The fire-place bricks are from the original cottage, and are sun-dried, (not kiln fired), and are hand-made. Convict marks can be seen on two bricks. There is a small display of external cladding shingles from the original pioneer cottage. These shingles were hand-split, and most likely made from locally collected timber The nails included in this display were used to fasten the shingles on the original cottage, and are also hand-made. The cottage was occupied by William Box and family from 1865 until 1914 when it was sold to William Reitman who resided there until 1950. The enamel nameplate, “Colonial”, on the wall of the cottage, was the name chosen for the original pioneer cottage by Mr William Reitman, when he purchased the property in around 1915, for 1200 Pounds approximately. In 1974 Mr Lewis, a timber specialist, found the dilapidated building on property he had recently purchased in Jasper Rd and suggested it be reconstructed and relocated. Moorabbin Council agreed and the cottage was rebuilt just about 250 metres from its original site. The cost of the rebuild was met by 'Victoria's 150th Committee, plus a small grant from the City of Moorabbin, and Mr Laurie Lewis donated much of the timber for the reconstruction. The re-constructed cottage plan has followed faithfully the original dimensions, and plan of the original pioneer cottage, and as many original items from that cottage’s long occupation have been incorporated. The photographs in Album 1 record the progress of the reconstruction from February 1984 to the First Public Open Day November 18th 1984The Moorabbin Standard was the local newspaper for the City of Moorabbin during the 20thCentury until it was absorbed into The Leader Newspaper Group Pty Ltd. The photographs in Album 1 record the progress of the reconstruction from February 1984 to the First Public Open Day November 18th 1984The Moorabbin Standard was the local Newspaper for the City of Moorabbin during the 20th century until it was absorbed into the Leader Newspaper Group Pty Ltd. Mrs H. Deam and Mr Arthur Smith, CMHS members, kept this article to record the progress of the ‘Reconstruction’ from February 1984 to November 1984. This article 6/7/1977 notes that Mr Lewis jnr states "The National Trust is not interested in the house because it is built of wood". and that Cr Max Fox MCC states " It is too easy to knock things down and regret the loss of these pieces of history later on". Although 'Box Cottage' is a re-construction, it is an unique museum that, being located in the midst of a modern community in Ormond Victoria, can educate and demonstrate many aspects of the early settler’s way of life in Victoria. As such, it is an invaluable resource for students and all kinds of visitors. Remington Standard Typewriter No. 7 Functional object Remington Standard Typewriter No. 7 Wyckhoff, Seamans & Benedict ...The Remington Typewriter Company originated from the firearms manufacturer E. Remington and Sons which was founded in 1816 in Ilion, New York. After the American Civil War, the company diversified into farm implements, sewing machines and typewriters. Remington started production of their first typewriter on 1st March 1873 with their first commercially successful typewriter, the Sholes & Glidden being produced in 1874. Key milestones include the 1878 Remington No. 2 which was the first typewriter to have both upper and lowercase. They were also the first typewriters to feature the QWERTY keyboard layout. E. Remington and Sons sold the typewriter division to Wyckoff, Benedict, and Seamans, who formed the Remington Typewriter Company in 1886. In 1927 a further merger created the company Remington Rand. It later became one of the biggest computer manufacturers in the United States. Production of Remington typewriters eventually ceased after a 1986 merger that formed the Unisys Corporation. The Remington Standard No.7 typewriter was manufactured by Wyckhoff, Seamans & Benedict of Ilion, New York, U.S.A. Remington typewriters were originally made by the Remington Typewriter Company but in 1893 Wyckhoff, Seamans & Benedict obtained sole distribution rights for Remington typewriters and sole manufacturing rights in 1896. It is an up strike class typewriter in which the typebars rest in a semicircular vertical type basket and rotate upwards to strike the paper and platen from below. As a result the printed characters are not immediately visible to the operator. The platen had to be pivoted upwards and backwards for the operator to check their work. Remington persisted with the upstrike design until 1908 when they introduced the Model 10 which was a visible writer where the work could be seen as it was typed. This item is significant because typewriters such as were used widely throughout businesses in Wodonga and internationally.A Remington upstrike typewriter. "[Hattersley] Standard Loom Tuners Handbook: Setting instructions " - George Hattersley and Sons Ltd...The Hattersley Standard Loom was designed and built in 1921. ...This handbook contains the setting instructions for a Standard Hattersley Loom developed by George Hattersley and Sons Ltd. The Hattersley loom was developed by George Hattersley and Sons of Keighley, West Yorkshire, England. The company had been started by Richard Hattersley after 1784, with his son, George Hattersley, later entering the business alongside him. The company developed several innovative looms, of which the Hattersley Standard Loom – developed in 1921 – was a great success. The Hattersley Standard Loom was designed and built in 1921. Thousands of models were expected to be sold, which would bring considerable financial success to the company. After the recapitalisation boom of 1919, cotton yarn production peaked in 1926 and further investment was sparse. Rayon, an artificial silk, was invented in the 1930s in nearby Silsden, and the Hattersley Silk Loom was adapted to weave this new fabric. An example of this type of loom can be seen on Vic Collections here ( https://victoriancollections.net.au/items/54065d0f9821f50e3cc9c122 ) and is also on display within the National Wool Museum in Geelong, Victoria.
