This window, in memory of Alice Sibthorpe Tracy, was unveiled on 31 October 1933 by the Right Reverend R. Stephen D.D. along with the brass tablet in the Williamstown building, and a sectile tablet in the Port Melbourne building. (AR 1933). "A scheme has been set in operation to raise funds so that a memorial may be erected to Miss A. Sibthorpe Tracy, who has done so much for the Victoria Missions to Seamen. It has been decided that a companion window to that of "The Light of the World" will be placed in St. Peter's Chapel, the design being that of a figure of Hope with her hand on a ship's anchor. Mrs. Speechley worked as a maid at Fortuna, Bendigo's grandest home, for eight years starting just after leaving school. The estate was renowned for its size (40 rooms) and beautiful gardens. The household employed a staff of seven, including two German maids who served the family for 50 years. Workdays were long, starting at 7:30 am and ending after 10 pm, with only brief afternoon breaks. Duties included serving afternoon tea to guests, often from Bendigo's leading families, and maintaining the entire house even though only two Lansell family members lived there. Despite the decline of the gold baron era, the Lansells maintained a lavish lifestyle, hosting elite guests such as Lords Stradbroke, Stonehaven, and Sommers.The family owned several of Bendigo's finest homes and frequently entertained high-profile visitors, including governors and relatives from England. Staff enjoyed simple pleasures like boating on the lake and relaxing in the gardens when the family was away.Mrs. Speechley recalls specific incidents, such as serving while Lord Stonehaven was in residence and working at other Lansell properties like Dendra and Lansellstowe.Mrs. Speechley's memories provide a unique glimpse into the domestic service and social life of one of Bendigo's most prominent families during the 1920s, preserving a romanticized view of a bygone era. The Lansell family maintained high standards at Fortuna mansion, especially during visits from governors, with special preparations such as new curtains, linens, and engraved silverware.Mrs. Lansell preferred to shop in Melbourne rather than Bendigo due to her high social status and discomfort with local attention. The document shares a lighthearted story about a governor misplacing his bathing suit and retrieving it himself. Mrs. Speechley, a former staff member, recalls her experiences working for the Lansell family, including her brief departure and return after Mrs. Lansell's advice. It commands a magnificent 360 degree panorama from Kinglake across the Diamond Valley to Macedon and the You Yangs. It is built on a peak which was once a volcano, 237 metres above sea level. After World War one a memorial cairn was erected on the site, and in 1925 a committee of public-minded citizens began to plan for a tower. Many generous donations of material and money were forthcoming so that in 1926 the Governor General Lord Stonehaven was able to unveil the plaque before a crowd of 500 people. There was some concern in the 1960s when the Forests Commission wanted to build a firespotters cabin on the top. This unique document was produced in honour of Dr William (Bill) Alexander Sloss, Patron of Sloss House, Clarendon Presbyterian Ladies' College, on his birthday 5 August 1962. It features a handwritten dedication in coloured ink, black and white photograph of Dr Sloss, Dr Sloss' own 10 page history of the school and 3 pages of signatures from the 1962 members of council, members of staff and school prefects. The book has been bound by local printing company Waller & Chester but all pages have been produced by hand. It is a significant record of the esteem and appreciation in which Dr Sloss was held by the school community. Dr Sloss served on the school council 1919-1966. His daughter-in-law, wife of Bill Sloss (Old Collegian 1921-1934) Janie also served 1956-1964 and again 1969-1973 and on the Ballarat Clarendon College council in 1974. Dr Sloss was instrumental in the purchase of Clarendon Ladies College by the local Presbyterian community in 1919 and the opening, by Governor General Stonehaven, and ongoing establishment of the Mair Street site in 1925. He was instrumental in the appointment of seven Principals - Carson, Short, Shaw, McDonald, Mathieson, Kerr and McPherson. His contribution to education in Ballarat for nearly 50 years is inestimable. The book is accompanied by a black and white photograph labelled 'Clarendon College Sports', undated. After World War one a memorial cairn was erected on the site, and in 1925 a committee of public-minded citizens began to plan for a tower. Many generous donations of material and money were forthcoming so that in 1926 the Governor General Lord Stonehaven was able to unveil the plaque before a crowd of 500 people There was some concern in the 1960s when the Forests Commission wanted to build a firespotters cabin on the top. At first R.S.L. branches opposed the idea, but it was realised that this use could combine with its use as a tourist attraction, and would ensure its maintenance for the future. Today the Kangaroo Ground tower provides one of the best views around Melbourne and is a fitting memorial to those who died in two world wars. From: Historic items for Diamond Valley Community Radio September 1990 (EDHS collection) On November 8th, 1951, the memorial was re-dedicated by the Governor of Victoria, Sir Dallas Brooks with the addition of the names of men from the Shire of Eltham who fell in the Second World War.
