Post Card, In and around Sunbury with Greeting

The post card is one of a set that were produced by Chris Christainsen, who had a pharmacy in Sunbury and was also a photographer. The four photos featured on the card are the Rupertswood Mansion, St Mary's Church of England, Jacksons Creek in floods ands Sunbury Railway station.The buildings and places featured on the card are of historical significance in the Sunbury town precinct. A post card with four sepia photographs of interesting sites which can be seen in the Sunbury township. Photograph, Sunbury Powerhouse, c21st June 1910

The powerhouse in Sunbury began generating electricity for the town in 1908 after the Shire of Bulla saw the benefits of the town having electricity. It functioned until 1924 until the State Electricity Commission took over the project. The post card was written on 21 June 1910 and sent to a Miss Hillary who was living in Benalla. It was from her cousin Mr. Gregor who was a Sunbury resident. From the date on the card, the photograph must have been taken shortly after the powerhouse began operating. The aerial view of Sunbury was featured in The Argus newspaper in 1936 in recognition of 100 years of European settlement of the area. It shows the extent of the township in 1936 which extended from the railway line in the west to the Jackson Creek in the east and the Sunbury Asylum in the south and northwards towards Macedon Street. The photograph was taken when Sunbury was a country settlement 25 miles ( 37 kms) from Melbourne. The mural of an impression of Macedon Street in Sunbury 100 years ago was painted by Frank Breen, on the brick garage wall of the Catholic Presbytery and it faced the garden in front of the former Sunbury Courthouse. Before the railway arrived in Sunbury in 1859, Macedon Street was the town's business centre. Early local businesses and and institutions that the artist included in the mural include on the LHS former courthouse, Out Lady of Mt. Carmel and the Sir John Franklin Hotel. On the RHS are some shops and the Ballcourt Hotel.The mural gives an impression of Sunbury's first business centre before it shifted closer to the railway station which arrived in Sunbury in 1859.A non-digital coloured photograph of an artist's impression of a street in Sunbury 100 years ago. This flagon was produced to celebrate Sunbury's 150th anniversary 1836-1986. Similar ones were filled with wine and were for sale or given as presentations at the time of the anniversary. The man on the horse was photographed close to the main entrance of The Avenue which was the main approach to the former Sunbury Asylum. In later years the conifer trees were replaced with oak trees and today The Avenue is still the main road leading into Jacksons Hill, the housing estate that has been built on the former Sunbury Asylum land.The housing development on the former Sunbury Asylum site began in the 1980s. A.J.Gregor, a Sunbury resident, had written the message on the back of the card to his cousin Harriet on the 11th April 1912 informing her of his state of health and some of the town's activities. Those mentioned were his need to travel to the hospital in Melbourne fot medical treatment, billiard contests at the local hotel, theatre shows in the town as well as weather details.The message on the reverse side of the card gives an insight into the day to day happenings in Sunbury in 1912.A non-digital sepia post card with four photographs of sites in Sunbury, namely the Mill Fall, Rupertswood mansion, Dr. Faulkner's residence and the race track at Kismet. Booklet, Friends of the Old Sunbury Court House 10th Birthday Celebration, 1993

This booklet was put together by members of the committee of the Friends of the Old Sunbury Court House for the 10th anniversary of the former Court of Petty Sessions becoming the Sunbury Visitor Information Centre. The Sunbury Court of Petty Sessions situated in Macedon Street, Sunbury closed at the end of 1989. The community formed a committee to retain the premises to be used by the community and officially opened by the Shire of Bulla Mayor Cr. Phillip McMahon as the Sunbury Visitor Information Centre on 21st February 1993. Chris. Christiansen had a barber shop in Sunbury and was the photographer in the town from 1895 until 1916. He conducted his business in a building situated on the corner of Evans and Brooks Streets. Photograph, Vineyards - Ben Eadie and Craiglee, 1903

The two homesteads are Ben Eadie and Craiglee, which were two of Sunbury's earliest vineyards that were established in Sunbury. James Stewart Johnson designed and built his concrete home, Craiglee, in 1865 where the previous year he had planted out his vineyard on the surrounding 26 acres of land.The property was on the east side of Jacksons Creek on Macedon Road. He concentrated growing Riesling and Hermitage grapes. After his death in 1896, his son Wilfred continued to produce wines until the late 1920s, when he pulled out the vines and concentrated on raising sheep for wool and meat. The Carmody family purchased the property in 1961 and in 1976 decided to replant the vineyard. Ben Eadie was built some time in 1863 and settled by the Eadie family who also were millers. The winery was built into the side of a hill close to the house but the Eadie family tended to concentrate on milling and retailing.In the earliest days of European settlement many wineries were established in the Sunbury area.Two non-digital sepia photographs have been mounted on cardboard. The Male Hospital in Sunbury was one of the buildings that was within the grounds of the Sunbury Mental Hospital, later known as the Sunbury Asylum, that opened on 1st December 1879 on She-oak Hill ( Jacksons Hill). Patients and staff from the Ballarat Asylum were transferred there. Prior to the establishment of the Asylum, the Sunbury Industrial School occupied the site from 1865. The Sunbury Asylum, later known as Caloola, continued to operate until the 1992.The Sunbury Mental Hospital was an important institution and was the main source of employment for Sunbury residents for 120 years. It was also one of a number of similar institutions that were established around Melbourne's outer rural centres.A sepia non- digital photo in post card format of a hospital building with verandahs along a section of the front and down the side. Book, Saltwater River History Trails

This book which was printed in 1984 gives not only the geology of the area but also the history of the various areas that Jacksons Creek and the Saltwater River now known as the Maribyrnong River pass through. There are many drawings and photos accompanying the information relating to the various areas and buildings researched in this book.
