In 2000 major renovation works were carried out on the Sunbury Bendigo Rail line to accommodate new and larger carriages which were going to replace older trains. On the afternoon of the 17th December 1985 torrential rain fell in Sunbury and surrounding areas which resulted in widespread flooding and caused disruption on the main Melbourne Bendigo Railway line. The steam train has arrived at Number 2 platform at Sunbury Railway Station. Before diesel engines were used on the regional lines, steam trains were widely used. The pedestrian bridge spanning the railway line was replaced with a larger one and included a ramp, to allow for disabled people's in 2001. Renovations and extensions were carried out at Sunbury Railway Station from 2010 to 2012 accommodate the electrification of the rail service from Watergardens to Sunbury. The grey buildings adjacent to the wooden building are the extensions on Platform 1. Both Platforms 1 and 2 were raised and extended to accommodate the electric trains. The old building on Platform 2 was replaced with a newer one. The smaller wooden bridge linking the two platforms was replaced with a higher one which had ramps as well as stairs. In November 2012, electric trains began terminating at Sunbury.Prior to 201to commute to and from Melbourne, Sunbury residents relied on steam trains which commenced in 1859. This is a photograph of the Sunbury Railway Terminal, looking north, taken shortly after the rail service became electrified in 2012. Prior to this date, Sunbury residents relied on the V Line service for their commute to Melbourne. Heavy snow fell across Melbourne and surrounding suburbs, including Sunbury, on 25th July 1985. The photograph taken from the pedestrian bridge at Sunbury Railway Station is looking north to the historic Macedon Street bridge. 17th April 1919 a stock train travelling north crashed head-on with a goods train coming in the opposite direction. The driver thought he had been given the all-clear to proceed into Sunbury and it was only when the train was approaching the Macedon Street bridge that he saw the red light and it was too late. The accident caused damage to rolling stack and disruption on the Bendigo and Maryborough lines. The train coming from Bendigo smashed onto the platform at Sunbury. The driver of the stock train was thrown under the van and suffered a broken arm and facial injuries. The fireman was thrown clear of the tracks. A local Sunbury doctor treated them before they were taken by a casualty train to hospital. A crew from Melbourne came to Sunbury to repair the damage. The track was cleared by that afternoon. This rail crash was one of many that has occurred in and near Sunbury and further on the tracks on the Bendigo Line over the years. The train smash occurred in Sunbury between the Station Street level rail crossing and Sunbury Station on February 6th 1952 at around 10pm. The goods train was being pulled by the green locomotive, which was used to take the Jubilee train throughout Victoria in 1951, to acknowledge 125 of European settlement in Victoria, ran into the back of another stationary goods train on the rail line. The guard, A.C Read, in the stationary goods train was killed. P J Mcwhirter, the guard in the other train was injured. Many goods were weighed loaded, offloaded stored in the storage sheds for the surrounding districts at this centre. The mounted photograph is one of a series used for display purposes. The water tower at Sunbury Station was built in 1861 by J. Bett. it is of state significance and is an indicator of the importance of the railway to Sunbury's expansion in the Nineteenth Century. Steam trains needed sufficient steam power to climb the steep gradients over the Great Dividing Range and the water tower at Sunbury was used to replenish the trains' water supply for the remainder of the journey.A black and white photograph of the water tower at Sunbury Railway Station.
